Kernel panics, continuous restarting - all after Mountain Lion upgrade

I upgraded an iMac 7,1 to Mountain Lion - and ever since it keeps restarting because of kernel panics.

I've not timed it, but after a matter of minutes it restarts. There's no particular program involved because it's happened even when I've just left the iMac sitting there doing 'nothing'.

Here's the report I got back after the restart:

Does anyone know why it keeps restarting, and how to fix it?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

This is the likely culprit.

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

com.spsys.driver.ENKEDriver(1.0)[ABF8786E-A66B-7EF8-

com.spsys.driver.ENKEDriver(1.0

See if there's an update for the program to which that belongs -- it might be incompatible with 10.8 -- or uninstall it completely. Find out if there's an uninstaller or get directions for uninstalling from the developer. Just dragging the app to the trash will not be sufficient. You can also disable it using the following.

For any of the possible culprit kernel extensions, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.

You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste

sudo kextunload

Important, leave a space after kextunload

Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.

This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/

Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.

This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.

EDIT: I'd also unload

com.spsys.driver.EIOKitDriver1.0.1

Searching, I'm not seeing anything really definitive about spsys, but I think it might be related to some A-V, possibly Norton. Norton/Symantec has a reputation for wrecking Macs. What A-V, if any, do you have? Many commercial A-V programs cause probems, including kernel panics. Whatever it is, uninstall it, using the uninstaller or directions from the developer.

If you want to use any A-V, get ClamXav. It won't cause any of these conflicts.

I would just uninstall the entire program, now that you know what it is. Open the .dmg and see if it contains an uninstaller, or contact the dev for instructions to uninstall. You can also go to eBlaster.app, if it's in your applications folder, click once on it to highlight it, and then do a right cick (Control-click) and select Show Package Contents. Look around inside; it might come with an uninstaller.

If you can't contact the dev or find anything on the site, then google "eBlaster uninstall." Try to find directions that include uninstalling all its components, including kexts, not just someone who says drag it to the trash.

But first see if there's an update. It seems it's now incompatible with 10.8.

That was my first shot, uninstalling it. eBlaster seems to hide itself away pretty well. Inside the DMG were some uninstall instructions but reading them it says when you install eBlaster you setup a few keys on the keyboard to open the control panel. So whatever keys you set up, if you press them all simultaneously it will open the control panel and you can uninstall it from there.

The only problem of course is I didn't even know it was installed so I don't know the keys to press.

I've been Googling it but I'll do some more! 🙂
