Q: WiFi network inconsistencies

I have a wireless network using airport extreme downstairs and an extension upstairs with an airport express. I open my macbook upstairs and I'm online. I go downstairs and I am off line and have to manually choose my network. If I go back upstairs I am automatically online. Something has changed to cause this and trying to discover it is driving me nuts. Help please. What have I changed and forgotten?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 10.7.4

I suggest starting by double-checking the following Apple Support article just to be sure there was nothing missed when you configured your AirPorts for an extended network. Please post back your results.
