Over The Air MDM Configuration, iOS 6 and Apple Configurator

Hello,

Does anyone know if OTA MDM Configuration is affected by the 'Supervised Mode' visible in the Apple Configurator tool?

The question is based on the following in the documentation:

"Devices running iOS 5 and later can be designated as supervised when preparing it for deployment with Apple Configurator. When a devices is supervised, you are granted additional control over its configuration and can reapply that that configuration at anytime by reconnecting the device to Apple Configurator. For more information about Apple Configurator, see Apple's iPad in Business page. "

Based on the above snippet, there should be no difference in behavior. However, a question has been raised and I would like to know if anyone has any more information.

TIA

Hello,

A little more information:

From the document named "Mobile Device Management Protocol
Reference" with a file name of mobiledevicemanagementprotocolreference.pdf dated 2012-08-27.

"Devices running iOS 5 and later can be designated as supervised when preparing it for deployment with
Apple Configurator. When a devices is supervised, you are granted ongoing control over its configuration
and can reapply that that configuration at anytime by reconnecting the device to Apple Configurator. For
more information about Apple Configurator, read Apple Configurator Overview at Apple’s iPad in Business
page."

Additionally, in the "Configuration Profile Reference" with a file name of configurationprofilereference.pdf dated 'iOS 6', the following is on page five:

"Devices running iOS 5 and later can be designated as supervised when preparing it for deployment with
Apple Configurator. When a devices is supervised, you are granted additional control over its configuration
and can reapply that that configuration at anytime by reconnecting the device to Apple Configurator. For
more information about Apple Configurator, see Apple’s iPad in Business page."

Ola Folks,

It turns out that the issue was documentation related.

According to the documentation, I needed to perform certain steps. However, the documentation did not and does not reflect what actually works. Experimentation by a third party revealed that an extra step was required.

The MDM Protocol Reference is:

Hiya Folks,

Looks like I either gave the wrong location (possible) or the document was changed (possible).

Here is what I have:

- IPCU Help

help.apple.com/iosdeployment-ipcu/mac/1.0/

Some of the information that is in the MDM Protocol Reference that I found before is here.

Also some of the information from the Configuration Profile Reference.

- Deploying iPhone and iPad Mobile Device Management

- Mobile Device Management Protocol

adcdownload.apple.com//Documents/mobile_device_management_protocol/mobiledevicem anagement_121211.pdf

No Longer Available. I get an error.

- Configuration Profile Reference:

- iPhone and iPad in Business Deployment Scenarios

- iOS 6 Security

- Deploying iPhone and iPad Digital Certificates:

- Deploying iPhone and iPad Apple Configurator

Without verifying or validating specifics, my initial thought is that the first one is the closest to what *was* the Mobile Device Management Protocol Reference.

I also think that MDM is still a moving target with Apple and they are still trying to figure out what they want to have available and how it should be made available.

I hope it helps.
