I'm getting this error when trying to download iOS 6.
"Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iOS 6."
I've tried twice now. Not doing anything unusual. I'm on my home wifi and I'm plugged in to my computer with a genuine Apple cable. Anyone else having this happen? 😟

I have now tried letting iTunes do the update and that fails as well.
I also see that 3 other people have said they have this problem too.
That happens everytime a new update comes out. There are millions of people trying to get it right now and the servers are overwhelmed. Give it time.
I do not believe that is my problem. The download appears to complete just fine in about 5 minutes time. Once the message changes from saying "Downloading Update" to "Installing Update" is when it hangs and eventually gives the aforementioned error. In other words, it's downloading, just not installing.
I also have never had this happen in the past and I've used iPhones since the first one in 2007.
I too am having this problem... has anyone figured out why this might be?
ETA: i was able to update my other iphone but not my iphone 4
Im at work on wi-fi and ive tried 5 times already and it says the same thing as you. I get that message when it says preparing update. Its making me mad. I want ios 6 damnit!

Dont know if any one has had this issue but I could never update iOS on my ipad2.
IT has ios5.1.1 and every time I try to update to ios6 it gives me software update failed error.
THe software was downloaded fine and it did try to install but no luck.
ANy help on this pls.

OK I finally got it done. This is what I did.
Opened iTunes.
Updated iTunes.
Backed up iPhone.
Tried to update iPhone but iTunes gave an error.
Chose to restore iPhone to previous backup.
New restore was done with iOS 6.
:)
It sure would be nice to get a different error message if the above is true. And not after waiting 15 minutes.
It could pop up as "servers are busy try again later"... at least we'd know what is happening!
Or it could download once the servers were available...
My itunes says 17 hours remaining and has gave me an error message in my previous efforts.
My upgrade is going on.
I had the same message (in Italian. I'm in Italy) after the download. I pressed a button (do not remember, may be OK or "Go On") and I got the EULA on screen. Accepted and pressed "Install Now".
Install is going with the usual black screen and Apple Logo.
I believe the message about the error IS an error.
iOS 6 will not install on either my iPhone 4S, or my iPad3!! Get the error message "Software Update Failed" "An Error Occured Downloading iOS 6." Tried multiple times... no luck.

I am in Texas... thouogh from reading this post, it seems to be happening all over. Spoke with a friend in Los Angeles, and he is having the same issues. What gives Apple?!
I am having the same problem on my iPhone 4. Tried 4 times and it gives that same error after downloading at the "Prepairing Update..." phase. Updated my New iPad without a problem. iOS 6 just seems to hate my iPhone 4.
