My experience with wireless sync has been pretty good in the last few months, after learning how to stop and restart the Apple Mobile Device service if necessary, and making sure SyncServer was "approved" by my Norton Security.

With iOS 7, everything seems to be working perfectly...so far, and multple times a day. In fact, I don't even have to plug in to sync. iTunes sees my device and away we go.

Even after upgrading to ios 7, itunes 11.1 and Mac OS 10.8.5 wifi sync still does not work as intended.  I have been in communications with Apple regarding this issue for approximately 9 months.  They have implicated anything and everything but their own fault regarding this issue until I did extensive troubleshooting with Verizon FIOS to prove that Apple was in fact responsible for poor wifi sync.  Their executive relations team forwarded the information to the engineers and Apple engineers conceded that it was in fact an Apple issue.  Since then, Apple executive relations has communicated that their office will not longer provide any updates regarding the issue.

The following is a compiled report and conclusions from Verizon FIOS

    Complaint-

Verizon FiOS customer in NY is having issues with Wake On LAN (WOL) connected to a Actiontec Gen 3 Rev I router (BHR). The customer has extensive Apple product most  of the devices the customer has are connected wireless to his Airports or time capsule. The customer does not use the wireless of the BHR he only connects to Apple devices.

    Partial EU list-

                    - 5 IPhones

                    - 2 IPod touches

                    - 3 IPad Mini’s

                    - IPad 4

                    - Time Capsule

                    - 2 or 3 Airport Extremes

                    - IMac

                    - LaCie Cloudbox

                    - Sonos

                    - Other devices not listed

    Testing with the customer-

We attempted to test and remote into the customer to observe the issue. We did some packet captures with the customer and analyzed these there was no conclusive information. After discussing the customers setup with him we (Verizon and Actiontec) attempted to recreate the issue in our lab, this was successful.

    Lab Testing

We recreated the issue by using the following

    -          IMac in share with ITunes running this device was connected wired and wireless

    -          IPad connected wireless

    -          HTC DNA connected wireless

    Routers used for testing

    -          Actiontec Rev I

    -          Technicolor

    -          Netgear

    -          D-Link

Below is a small portion of a Wireshark packet capture, looking at lines 56,57, 65, and 66 you will see Wake On LAN Protocol (WOL).  These packets (WOL) are present in Sleep wired/wireless coming from the HTC DNA to the IMac using the following routers Actiontec, Technicolor, Netgear and D-Link. All tests using a non-Apple device to do the WOL passed all tests utilizing Apple devices to do the WOL failed.

    image002.png

    Conclusion

Based on the tests and packet captures this is not a BHR issue. I did some research on various sites also (these must be taken with a grain of salt) and it seems that many people are complaining of this issue and it is not Verizon related. Bottom line this is not a BHR issue but appears to be a iOS and OSx issue. I will be contacting the Apple engineers tomorrow to discuss these finding, and see where we can go with it. The other routers used for testing were non-Verizon routers they were off the shelf from the big box stores.

The Verizon Engineers also used a pure Apple setup (i.e. only Time Capsule was used as a router) and once again it failed.

I feel that Apple is digging their head in the sand and their Executive Relations team has become very arrogant and condescending.

THIS WAS NEVER AN APPLE WAY.

I am not sure if this will help but , there was a known wake up on lan issue with AMD processors on a NIC card. and we had to change all of our cards to a intel processor based NIC cards. I presume you did all of the potential bios or uefi setting assuming they are used in your MAC. But if it is possible look at the NIC card and verify whether it is using an intel processor on the NIC card, if not trying getting a new intel based nic card.

My iMac has an intel processor.

The processor on the NIC card is the intel? I am not referring to the main processor!

I had a 2009 iMac. I upgraded to the latest model this January. Both have the same problem.

So we now have iOS7 and Mavericks and the Wi-Fi sync problems are still there.  This is just getting old and ridiculous.

    Same.  Still hit and miss.

    Poor show really.

I have had no problems with the latest iTunes and the 5s with ios7.

  • 669. Re: wifi sync not working after ios6 update

I just want to clarify. When the computer is awake and itunes is running it does work. Once the computer goes to sleep it is hit or miss. The way wifi sync should work is once you plug your device in ir press sync no it should send wake on lan packet and it should wake up the computer and initiate the sync. So sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. What happens is that once you press sync now or plug the device in the harddrivr in the computer start spinning (ie it sees the wake on Lan) but the sync doesn't always happen.

I posted in the apple developer bug reporter and got a reply recently asking me to do the following.

Please turn up usbmux related logging as follows:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.usbmuxd DebugLevel -int 7

Then reproduce the failing case and attach /var/log/system.log. Thanks

I am not very familiar with Sudo commands and am not all that eager to try it. I will turn on usbmuxd but will not know how to turn it off.

    @macuserae,

I don't discount your problem at all.  However, the problem you describe is definitely not the only problem behavior occurring.  I have followed this problem for some time and definitely experience problems even though my iTunes is ALWAYS on and running.

Same here. I have the problem and my machine never sleeps.

Has anyone seen any improvements?  I have had the sporadic on and off performance. I have seen a few threads talking about ipv6 fixing things. I have tried it without success. I'm not sure whether local ipv6 would help because not all internet providers support ipv6 yet (I have verizon fios)

Yes, this is no longer an issue for me. Everything is working perfectly for me. I almost hate to say that because obviously some are still having problems.
