iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

OK, four hours in since clean restore on 4S fromiTunes. Excellent battery life so far. Here's what I did:

1. DId a clean restore and set up as new phone. Confirmed Wifi network connection. Added my work e-mail through Exchange and Yahoo mail. Also added about 900 songs and 10 podcasts (all via cable and not Wifi). Charged to 100%. Sent a couple of e-mails to and from to confirm e-mail works. DID NOT add any Apps (as I suspect this is where the problem is).

2. From Hour 0 to Hour 2, iPhone in stand by mode most of time. Other than a couple of checks of lock screen to see battery level, no use. Battery at 100%.

3. Hour 2 to 3. Took a photo and sent by e-mail. Battery at 99%.

4. Hour 3-3.5. Set up Bluetooth connection to car, played one song at 80% volume on iPhone internal speaker. Battery at 98%.

5. Hour 3.5. Added NY Times and Boston.com Apps via cable to Itunes (not Wifi). Read one story in each. Charged battery back to 100%. Back of phone a tiny bit warm from what feels like ordinary use of processor. Shut both apps and locked screened phone.

6. Hour 3.75. Phone on standy by for last 15 minutes. Back of case is cold. Battery at 100%. Will continue to add back apps one or two at a time.

Working Hypothesis: One or more of my Apps has a compatibility issue with iOS6, It keeps crashing and restarting, keeping processor going until battery drained. Will avoid testing Facebook (several posters have pointed to this as potential culprit) until I have reloaded and confirmed that all of my "every day" apps are working.

Can all of you who are experiencing battery issues keep an eye on your usage time vs standby time under settings>general>usage. My usage time goes up even when the phone is not being used. In the past, I have run into issues where standby and usage times were the same and was able to resolve the issue by resetting the settings. However, with ios 6, that doesn't seem to work. I think the best way to test to see if you're also having this problem is to check your usage time, don't use the phone or 5 to 10 minutes, and check the usage time again. Is it the same as it was the first time you checked or has it increased?

I installed IOS 6 and like others experienced immediate excess battery drain. Reading this thread this morning my IP4 dropped from 100% down to 95% in very short order.

I just did a reboot, the phone rebooted @ 98% and has since only dropped to 97%

It's as if the phone thinks the battery is dying and acts accordingly. All those with drainage issues check to see how long the phone takes to charge, maybe the battery isn't dying, the phone just thinks it is.

I noticed a slight improvement regarding overheating by performing the following:

1. Reset all settings (first option in Reset Menu).

2. Upon reboot, entered Cellular (APN, MMS, etc.) settings.

3. Connected to a wireless network and entered WiFi password.

4. Rebooted the phone.

The personal hot spot is not spinning for ever as it used to be before. The phone was put in the charger during the above. Will test it for battery life.

Here's something odd. I had decided by battery problems were "fixed" since the other day I managed to get 6 hours and 40 minutes of "usage" (Maps, gaming, surfing, etc) and 14 hours and 10 minutes of with all my settings on except Bluetooth.

Today after charging my iPhone 4S up to 100% when I was about to leave my house I saw that it was down to 97% with only 1 minute of usage. At 3 minutes usage, I was at 95%. At 5 minutes of usage I was at 93%. I checked the CPU usage on the phone and it was at 20%. I killed a few background apps (including Music). This seemed to drop the CPU usage down to normal (eventually). When I got to work with 23 minutes of "usage" the phone was already at 89%. Last Friday by the time I got to work, my phone might be at 99% (normally it would be 100%).

I haven't restarted since it seems to be a bit better now as it is now at 83% after 45 minutes of usage and 3 hours and 54 minutes of Standby. Not counting the massive drain this morning (when it dropped 7% in less than 10 minutes) that's a 6% drop after 20 minutes of usage and 2 hours and 50 minutes of standby. Still not as good as it was last week.

I might have to reboot the phone if it doesn't clear up. There's definately some issues in iOS 6. Under iOS 5.1.1 I never had to reboot my iPhone. With iOS 6 I now have to reboot it every few days to clear up problems with Battery, WiFi, etc.

According to the reviews on that site, if you upgraded to iTunes 10.7, it won't work. Also someone posted that the link for the 4S is actually for the 4.

My 4s is currently on 43% battery left with 17.30 hours Usage and Standby since last charge. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays this way. I didn't set up my phone from a restore, it was set up as new...I upgraded from the 3GS to the 4S last week. After setting up as new, I let the battery drain down and recharged it. Restored it from itunes to get my contacts and info back and then disabled iCloud and the Passport feature. I also restricted Safari as it seemed it was accessing the internet when the phone was sleeping (My DataMan app showed me that) Once i disabled Safari, my battery is holding a better charge.

All I can do now is wait it out for a fix, like I had to do with the iOS 5.1.1 And look how long that took?

I called apple support to help with my hot phone and very poor battery life after upgrading to iO6. They wanted to do a test to determine if the problem was hardware or software. The asked me to do a

1. system restore http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

2. setup as new iphone

3. do not sync. do not connected with iTunes account.

I did this and my battery life is super. So before after an hour I was down 10 to 20 % without using the phone. My phone has been on Standby for 7 hours and battery has gone down 2%. Location services are disabled.

However, all my contacts are gone, all my data is gone, all texts, all apps, photos, music, etc. This does prove the iOS works on a new setup without killing the battery.

This also proves that the backup system is flawed whether from PC or iCloud. They are blaming the backup as being 'corrupt'. I am continuing to monitor performance and I will get a call from apple later today. I will post how long my battery lasts when it finally dies.

This is not a solution if you care about your personal data - I don't look at this as a fix, just as a way to make your phone work as a phone with some battery life.

Ok, so an 'AppleCare' technition was meant to call me apparently to discuss this issue. Didn't happen, nice one AppleCare.

ANYWAY.

After using my iphone after my fixes, I get an average of 7-9.5 hours of use. Which is 1-3 hours better than my iOS 5.1.1 so YAY.

However I have noticed a few things;

Facebook is an absolute battery drain. (I'd use a stronger word but it'd not post haha)
I use my normal morning apps - whatsapp, flipboard, emails, text - lose roughly 5% per hour - pretty freaking good in my opinion.

I open facebook, I lose around 10-15% per hour of usage if not more.

My theory is that something in the Facebook app/iOS has screwed up and it is asking for something that it cannot get.

I disabled facebook calender integration and that helped a lot, i left contacts on and the other thing (can't recall)

Also, not sure if anyone has had this, but my autobrightness doesn't seem to be working on my iphone 4 or my ipad (3rd gen)... Anyone got any help on this?

I talked to a Senior Advisor at Apple and had them troubleshoot my iPhone 4S with iOS 6 and the battery issue and we came to the conclusion that it IS a problem with iOS 6 and he said to wait till the next update is released. He gave no ETA on the next update but did tell me he would call me as soon as he hears anything about it.

There really is NO fix for it right now. We tried everything and nothing changed.

Sep 28, 2012 12:48 PM in response to Greg Bastug1

I tried to drain my battery last night like many other people in this thread, and again, like other people in this thread, my 4S hovered around 1% for a good 45 mins before dying, so I suspect the percentage gauge is being misrepresented on iOS 6.0. Turning off everything that makes a smartphone a smartphone seems to work though, Siri, iCloud, Location Services, most Notifications, and the battery life has never been better, which I wish i didn't have to do.

Sep 28, 2012 12:58 PM in response to Greg Bastug1

First of all thre IS an obvious problem here. and it is with iOS 6. How this is related to other apps does not seem to be all that relevent as most of us i assume got those apps through approved ways (iTunes- AppStore), and i also assume that most, like myself, had phones that worked with those same apps prior to the upgrade.

Second of all Apple IS aware of the problem and are taking steps to resolve this. Many like myself have been contacted direct by Apple through only our involvement on this forum and have been asked to run a special app (see below) to allow Apple to ferret out the problem.

I had a business trip yesterday and needed a phone that i could rely on so i broke down and reinstalled 2 days ago the iOS6 and set up as a new phone on my 4s hoping that this would help the situation. Since then the battery issue has improved a lot, but it still seems to be less than it was prior to the update, but it is giving me almost a full day of use.

The full restore is a real PITA as i am still re imputing various passwords, accounts and other details and so i have lost many hours of work and family time trying to fix an isues that in my opinion should never have happened.

Due to the reinstall i do not think that the Apple app is still on my phone, but i am not sure and will have to look a bit more.

Anyway, this is likely my last post here and i wish all the rest luck. And hopfully this is NOT something that i will have to endure again with future updates and i am a LOT less likely to be one of the first to install a new update and will likely wait until the first revision is released. Too risky with a tool that is so important to work and life. I did expect better from Apple.

Guys, I resetted (setup as a new device) my iphone 4s twice with almost everything off (except 3g) these days. Then i installed nothing. Even in that case the battery drain is there when you surf the net via safari with 3g. I can reproduce this. So whats draining the battery when everything is off? Looks like safari is peaking the cpu because you can see that with loading of the pages (loads a page without showing nothing (1-2-3 seconds) then the page is loaded in a fraction of a second entirely). After 1 to 4 minutes you can see the battery percentage dropping with 1%.

So the conclusion is that some (hardware) builds of the iphone 4s got this problem with ios 6 because not everyone has the same problem obviously. I did not have this issue with not one of the 5.x releases when there even was a battery issue at the beginning of the ios 5 release.

I already installed a lot of battery monitoring apps but not one of them shows the cpu/battery usage of individual processes in the background so looks like an IT guy as me can't troubleshoot the iphone without jailbraking.

I hope apple can solve this issue with the next version upgrade of 6.1 because its really frustating by now as there is no wide news articles about this issue like the one with the new maps or some wifi problems (what i don't have by the way).
