Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

    Ok,

Now I have Safari and all the related iCloud syncing disabled and the battery life is close to normal. 36 hours from the last recharge and still 40% left. This work around is Based on AlPrunty & Blunderact messages - Thank You!

    Disable these two from "Settings"

    - iCloud > Disable Safari

    - General > Restrictions > set security Key > Disable Safari

After this I had a major improvement in battery life. But as I mentioned - this is only a work around! You need to install some other browser, you can't sync your bookmarks, ...

To improve it even more you may want to disable other iCloud features, mail fetching frequency, etc.

Did not mention anything about battery drain fix

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/10/22/ios-6-0-1-and-ios-6-1/

Apple has allegedly begun testing iOS 6.0.1, a maintenance release that should address theannoying screen flicker which some users reported as happening when the iPhone 5keyboard pops up. The release should also fix another issue with the camera’s flash not going off. Apple is also working on iOS 6.1, the first so-called dot update to its mobile operating system powering iPhones, iPads and iPods. This release is not expected until after holidays, indicating that the upcoming iPad mini will initially run the current iOS version…

Boy Genius Report editor Jonathan S. Geller says he learned from sources that in addition to fixing the aforementioned bugs, iOS 6.0.1 will also deliver the following:

In addition, the new software will improve Wi-Fi support, fix cellular data not working in some cases, add a consolidated cellular data switch for iTunes Match, fix a bug that allowed access to Passbook pass details from the lock screen, and also finally fix the bug that caused Exchange meetings to be unexpectedly cancelled for the entire calendar invite group.

BGR is a mixed bag of accurate reporting and speculation when it comes to Apple news.

Back in June, the site reported Apple would release a software-development kit for the Apple TV and launch a feature-complete software to power the long-rumored standalone television set, neither of which came true.

I've been having battery draining problems ever since I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS6.  I was able to fix the battery drain problem and now my iP4 will stay on for over 2+ days.  This is what I did to get REALLY GREAT battery life:

    1.  Did a complete restore in DFU mode with iOS6 (clean install)

    2.  Turned off navigation (I paid $2k for a built in navi in my car, so don't need navigation on a phone)

    3.  Turned off iCloud  (I hand write all my contacts on a piece of paper as backup so I don't need this service)

    4.  Turned off WiFi   (I'm rarely in an area with WiFi so I don't need this)

    5.  Turned off bluetooth  (Don't have a bluetooth headset as I use speakerphone if I'm driving)

    6.  Did not install any apps that didn't come in the new install  (Not interested in any apps other than Apples)

    7.  Disabled Safari  (I have a computer at work where I do my browsing)

    8.  Turned off find my iPhone  (I've never had a phone stolen or lost, probably don't need this)

    9.  Turned off Facetime  (I have Skype and a web cam on my computer so I can video chat with my sister)

    10. Turned off Notifications  (Alerts are over rated anyways, I mean look how primitive iOS handles them compared to Blackberry and Android.)

    11.  Turned off Vibrate  (I carry my phone in a holster so I don't ever feel it vibrating anyways)

    12.  Turned all Sounds  (I'm usually in meetings or if at home watching a movie or sleeping where I don't want interuptions, so sounds are overrated to me)

    13.  Turned the Auto-Brightness off and turned the brightness all the way down to the min setting (I almost always look at the phone in a bright room, so having the phone dimmed all the way down doesn't matter)

    14. Used a black screen as my wallpaper  (Who cares about a nice wallpaper)

    15. Turned off Auto Set time  (I have a pocket watch, so I use that to tell time)

    16.  Turned off Autolock and passcode lock  (I live alone so there is no child or spouse to snope around)

    17.  Turned off 3G/Data (I have a house phone and a work phone if people need to call me)

So with the above modifications, believe it or not, I am able to get 2-3 days of battery life per charge with moderate use of the iPhone Calculator and Notes.

    Hope this helps!

Are you being humorous here? If so then what a cracking post but a small part of me thinks you actually run your phone like this?

Don't forget you can turn off Spotlight too. I mean who needs to search their phone?

I agree. If the cellular data bug is there certainly that would be causing the drain for a lot of folks. I understand Apple will be addressing this soon with an update. Once the cellular data /wifi fi bugs are squashed that should help improve the battery issues that are being caused by those two items.

Yeah, I don't mean to cause an argument, but my point is that there's a very SPECIFIC battery problem going around at the moment and this very specific problem (not poor battery life but absolutely horrendous battery life) is in many cases at least, also associated with a sudden and inexplicable jump in data consumption, taking many people over their data limits (see other threads). My point is that the data problem IS the battery problem - something is stuck sending or receiving large amounts of data, and this is going through 3G instead of wi-fi, causing people's batteries to die and their phones to overheat.

I'm sure there are many reasons why different people complain of poor battery life and your tips may work for some, but many of the complaints on this thread appear to be this very specific problem. It's worth making this clear because telling people to cycle their batteries and all the usual stuff is going over old ground and clouding the issue again. Some of us have been working through the problem on this thread and others for a couple of days now, and we've already got past the "turn it off and on again" stage!

    > So if iOS 6 or 5 had inherent issues in the code causing this then those fixes would never work for anyone agreed?

Uhuh. I've been a computer scientist and programmer for thirty years, so I'm not as dumb as I look. But I don't think these fixes ARE addressing the particular issue that's currently clogging the forum.

My iphone 4 battery (which i replaced only 3 months ago and was working fine with ios 5.1.1) is lasting about 6 hrs now, and something else i've noticed, around the edge and top of the phone is getting warm for no reason, no apps open at all, is anyone else getting this?

Are you kidding? Just turn off your iphone. You don't need one.

I am having the same battery issue with my iphone 4 (not getting warm) since this latest software update. I dont keep things running and I dont use my phone big time so it is in stand by most of the time. Now I am only getting roughly 8 hrs (stand by) and my phone must be charged.  I went to Apple and they didnt offer me a solution since I didnt have AppleCare and my phone was now 13 months old although the tech did tell me he was hearing similiar issues regarding battery life since the lastest software update but primarily with the iphone 4 not the 4s.  if the lasted update did have something to do with the extremely reduced battery life and Apple is not offering some kind of solution I am, needless to say, furious.

If I have to switch off everything with IOS 6, better switch to Samsung Galaxy series. I hope Apple will understand our pain and will acknowledge this problem with a promise to solution.

    Apple, quick please..............quick.

The story is that apple has started to work on issues with the new IOS 6 , but this info is not coming from Apple, so we really don't know if any update is in the works.

Just another update...my phone is at 1% and about to die.  But here is the usage statistics.  They continue to be worse than the previous day.  Pretty sad. AND the phone gets really hot when being used. Apple...please listen to your customers. It would keep me a loyal customer. Instead of a future enemy.

    Here it is....

    USAGE: 6 hours, 13 minutes

    STANDBY: 8 hours, 3 minutes

Just a reminder...this is a newly replaced phone that Apple Store gave me. AND they were the ones to install iOS 6 on the phone.
