Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

A buzz: some of our friends are thinking a symbolic rally to attract Apple's attention to the battery problem. I am little nervous about Apples name/fame if it happens (if the company does not listen and respond to its millions of customers world wide). Hope APPLE will respond.

I am also facing the same issue.

Today I updated my iPhone4s to IOS6. At that time bt% was about 76%

After some 3-4hrs it totally drained to <5 & auto switched off.

Just an update to my post.

With this work around I got 60 hours of "normal" usage. So, Safari+iCloud is the problem... At least for me.

Even though it's not as good as before iOS 6, I can live without Safari for a while :-)

I just hope the battery did not wear out too much during the weeks of massive drainage...

    Ok,

Now I have Safari and all the related iCloud syncing disabled and the battery life is close to normal. 36 hours from the last recharge and still 40% left. This work around is Based on AlPrunty & Blunderact messages - Thank You!

    Disable these two from "Settings"

    - iCloud > Disable Safari

    - General > Restrictions > set security Key > Disable Safari

After this I had a major improvement in battery life. But as I mentioned - this is only a work around! You need to install some other browser, you can't sync your bookmarks, ...

To improve it even more you may want to disable other iCloud features, mail fetching frequency, etc.

Just want to report that I too had the same drainage problem on my 4S when I installed IOS 6 via OTA with extremely poor performance compared to IOS 5.1.1 -- I finally broke down and re-installed as a new phone via iTunes, and had to painstakingly re-set all my settings, mail accounts, and apps. After a few days, even after re-installing via iTunes, the drainage seemed to re-appear.

After that I was pretty fed up to say the least. I tried another reset and back-up using my backup the second time and adjsuted iCloud and Safari settings, set the mail to fetch and some other helpful hints listed on this board and my phone seems to have been working satisfactorily for a few weeks now.

I still have wifi and bluetooth turned on, and check my exchange account every 30 minutes and other mail accounts manually. I also turned off the advertising as some suggested.  In my opinion, if I can get through a day and night with average use of email, interenet, apps, messaging and phone functions so that I only have to charge it once a day overnight around midnight then I am OK with that.

As expected, some of the apps drain the battery much more quickly if used, such as the mapping turn by turn, and streaming Spotify or iTunes through my car's bluetooth, but aside from that I think it has been working satisfactorily for my needs (knock on wood) and hoping it will continue to do so until my next upgrade in May of next year.

I have to say I was also extremely disillusioned when the battery was performing poorly - I still think iPhone is the best, but if it does not perform as expected, then it is not the best anymore is it ? People in our office have iPhone 5 and have had no battery complaints. It seems lightning fast too - just FYI.

My two cents for what it's worth - hope mine doesn't revert at some point. Will keep you posted.

After reading much of this thread, about a week ago after trying some intermediate solutions, I did a full reset to original condition (and full charge from less then 20%), which honestly, I needed to do anyway to sort out a mess I had between my original alphanumeric AppleID and my new required web address ( a whole different set of  gripes ). Anyway, it has been five days and the phone tends to be behaving. Not, like when it is on really good behavior (100% charge after a couple hours), but I can get through a day, doing whatever and not worrying about it. In the past When I upgraded from iOS 4 to 5, my phone acted similarly, and then after I got it under control a couple months later it started working really well, without me doing anything. Maybe Apple did something, maybe I did. Anyway, I think the problem is gone (crossed fingers). JD

How can be posible that people satisfy that fast, its NOT a solution have to turn off anything that came natively with the phone.

The issue here is that I need the samen battery cycle that i have with iOS5.1

Its not possible that i have to disable such important things as safari.

I tend to agree with your logic, but you don't have to totally disable Safari, just do not sync the bookmarks. Or use Google Chrome which is also a possiblility. I still use Safari on my 4S. I think IOS 6 was made to work with the iPhone 5 which has a faster chip and can handle a larger workload more easily and efficiently than the 4S ... resulting better battery life and a lighter workload...  just a guess. I believe you are correct in that everything should function as intended.  So Apple should have left the option to revert to 5.1.1 for 4S users IMO too.

Do you realize this is exactly what we said when 4.0 came out and hobbled the 3G (insert iPhone 4 for 5)? I hope any update to 6.0 goes better than the 4.0 fiasco where nothing siginifcant was ever done for the 3G. At that time everyone wanted to revert to 3.x but like now, was not possible.

In that case Apple must inform iPhone 4/4S users about the dangers of updating to ios 6 and must not recommend to update.

We need an answer from Apple.

They will never do that. Even after they acknowledged issues with 4.0 and the 3G they never warned users or allowed them to revert. History has a way of repeating I guess.

On the other hand I know at least two dozen iPhone users, and they have no problems. So, I suspect these problems are not nearly as ubiquitous as it feels when you are one of them. Also, compare this to a MS upgrade, and make this seem like fun.
