Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Nov 9, 2012 7:35 PMby abowen,My 4S won't stay charged longer than 2-3 hours since upgrading to IOS6. I have tried restarting it twice. I have let it go completely dead (not by choice!!!) and then fully charged it. It still continues to lose all battery power within 2-3 hours. Is there going to be a software update to fix this????

Nov 10, 2012 2:58 AMby nicolefrompully,Safari is not an issue for me as I don't have it or the bookmarks set up in iCloud. My iPhone 4S drain started the second I updated to ios 6.0.1. and my phone is set up the same way it always has been.
Some have suggested Facebook is causing the drain. I don't use Facebook and it is not set up on my phone either.No Bluetooth either. I have no widgets and I have the strict minimum set up in the notifications center. I have done a hard reset of the phone and battery drain is still the same. My phone is mostly in stand-by, I hardly use it. A short phone call from time to time and maybe a message or two a day. I hope Apple quickly bring out a fix in 6.1 !

Nov 10, 2012 6:54 AMby Kevin41269,I too updated to iOS 6.0.1 and my battery life now stinks! It was fully charged yesturday morning and within 4 hours off the charger it was at 50%. I checked and no apps running in the background. I turned it off, did a reset and nothing helped. It by then it had dropped to 30%.
Today I will do a restore and see what happens.

Used the phone for 1 call. This is rediculous. I have had two iphones, I don't think I will be going to Apple for my next smart phone.

Nov 10, 2012 12:53 PMby WINNIHESEL,Ok. Post 4 describing my odyssee with the battery drain. It's been two days since I restored the phone (4s) as "new" and this worked for me. Didn't shut anything off, installed all the apps that I had before, added the Exchange account and all other eMail accounts as before. It's back to what I was used to for a battery life. My lesson learned is that it was either the Exchange account or coming from the original iPhone. Either the backup process, the upgrade process to 6.0.1 or having too much history seems to cause the issue. What surprised me, was that I found new settings and displays (example: I use a german keyboard as a secondary keyboard - the layout of the german keyboard is now different that it used to be, i.e. correct and it includes the 3 umlauts - that was not there before), so it seems that depending on when you started with iOS you might want to consider starting from scratch every two or three versions down the road. Doesn't make sense, but it's all software after all...

Nov 10, 2012 1:11 PMby Z4boy77,Yesterday i full charge my iphone and unplugged att 12h and att 00h30 iphone dies with 55% off batery in the display percentage....i dont undestamd what's going on...i recharged it that hour at 6h00am and at this moment i have 81%, but he has in flight mode from 8h00am at 15h30....send sms received and made fewcalls...recharge is about 4h to full with ios 6.0/6.0.1

Nov 10, 2012 5:26 PMby Gammey3,Updated to 6.0.1 on my 4s, battery used to last two days without charging now it only lasts 4 hours if I'm lucky and avoid using it. Tried resetting my phone as new and deleting iCloud , bookmarks , safari and every last other suggestion, my phones battery will still not make it through 4 hours. This is getting ridiculous, I now have a very expensive object that I can't even use as a paperweight because it gets so dang hot it would probably start a fire. I need solid solutions Apple.

Nov 10, 2012 6:24 PMby Roci.S,Omg i swear apple doesnt think straight makes a new update to fix bugs on surtain things... but then again makes a HUGE BUG on the MOST IMPORTANT THING ON A PHONE THE BATTERY.... i'm not gonna do nothing about it because once u do something that is at risk in your phone something else happens wrong.... i'm just gonna wait until Apple makes a NEW UPDATE FIXING BATTERY ISSUE. IT BETTER BE QUICK (IOS 6.0.1)

Nov 15, 2012 10:28 AMby Player8,Gammey3 from experience if your iPhone is that hot you should have lots of crash logs with the same name, you can search for the fix with that name (eg dataaccessd). Location of crash logs below:
Settings > General > About > Diagnostics and Usage > Diagnostics and Usage Data
For info there is 3 types of bugs, this should let you isolate you issue:
- iCloud (Bookmarks / Contacts) > Doesn't seem to be your issue.
- Email (Exchange Calenders) > Delete Accounts to locate issue, Re-Adding them have sometimes fixed the issue. Failing that manual fetch is another option.
- Apps > Viber / Skype / Facebook have all been named as culprits. Re-Install them and for the VOIP programmes check settings to ensure they are still not running in background after use.

Nov 10, 2012 10:13 PMby Gammey3,Thank you for the info, my crash logs say dataaccesd_ping_power_assertion (followed by a ton of letter-number comibations) I turned off my location settings and that seems to slow the battery drainage but not stop it, it managed to make through my entire 8 hour shift at work, without me using it for anything, but died on the way to the parking lot. Still got warm but not hot enough to fry an egg this time. I will try the DFU mode reset and see what happens.

Nov 10, 2012 11:41 PMby Player8,"dataaccessd" is related to the email, specially ones that use "Exchange Activesync" technology.
So for iOS that would be:
- Microsoft Exchange.
- Gmail.
- Hotmail.
From others in various battery threads most don't see this issue again once DFU restore used, some:
- have to delete and re-add the accounts to resolve the issue.
- have to set the email accounts to manual or fetch to resolve the issue.
I think some people maybe experiencing what being decribed in point 3 of the troubleshooting guide below, therefore turning of Wi Fi when not in use can help resolve some issues:
