Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

Well I don't know what to think really.  Its gone down 5%, but idle its fine.  Texting back and forth it goes down faster than I would still expect.  However it was draining about 15-20% when idle earlier today.

BTW I have an iPhone 4S and I upgraded to iOS 6 last Thursday.  This didn't start happening until around 12:30PM CST today.

Guys i found this. You are able to restore back ios5

Apple iOS 6 Bugs Annoying iPhone Users

    25 Sep 2012

iOS 6, the latest update to the iOS platform for iOS devices hasn’t gone down overly well with customers. From a poor maps “upgrade” to general glitches, users aren’t happy. If you are one of them and regretting upgrading to the iOS 6 platform, App Picker will help you get back to iOS 5. This won’t work on the iPhone 5 though (it never had an iOS 5 version).

    1. Plug your phone in to your computer and open iTunes.
    2. Back-up data on your phone – use iCloud back-up.
    3. You now need to get a “IPSW” file for your device – MacLife has a comprehensive list here. Download the correct one for your device.
    4. Go to your device page in iTunes, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Option (Mac) while clicking “Restore” – this should open up a file explorer window.
    5. Select the IPSW file you downloaded in Step 3 and press Open.
    6. Wait for your iPhone to restore to iOS 5.
    7. Once it’s complete, you can restore all your pictures, videos, and settings through iCloud without worry.
    8. If you get a prompt for an update, decline it (unless you want to do all this again!)

That’s it: your iPhone should now be back on iOS 5, with Google Maps and a bug-free experience. Enjoy!

when I use the computer usb port to charge the battery, I found something strange:

battery indicator is showing 100% from my iphone within a hour

battery indicator is still showing "charging" from iTunes after two hours.

The battery indicator might make you think your iphone's battery is fully charged from the iphone but it doesn't

According to the reviews on that site, if you upgraded to iTunes 10.7, it won't work.  Also someone posted that the  link for the 4S is actually for the 4.

My 4s is currently on 43% battery left with 17.30 hours Usage and Standby since last charge.  Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays this way.  I didn't set up my phone from a restore, it was set up as new...I upgraded from the 3GS to the 4S last week.  After setting up as new, I let the battery drain down and recharged it.  Restored it from itunes to get my contacts and info back and then disabled iCloud and the Passport feature.  I also restricted Safari as it seemed it was accessing the internet when the phone was sleeping (My DataMan app showed me that)  Once i disabled Safari, my battery is holding a better charge.

All I can do now is wait it out for a fix, like I had to do with the iOS 5.1.1  And look how long that took?

Ok - upgraded - not fussed about maps etc Concerned that my usage is so high but my biggest problem is that in the 5 days since the upgrade, my phone has only opperated for 2 of them - the rest i just have a black screen with a battery even if its been on charge all day - i finally restored it as a new phone - it died for a day in the middle of this process and then woke up by itself, and now that i have restricted safari, used chrome and hard restared it seems better. Not great but better.

So this restore as new phone seems to help - getting rid of safari seems to help . I cant say usage figures as the usage numbers are blank for some reason - the whole usage and battery % under IOS 6 is stuffed.

I also have a suspicion you could trick it into going back in operating systems with some preplanning - there is a file in your itunes ( only possible with itunes), that has the os download - if you save the latest one that works, if you did an upgrade and it didnt work, its possible that if you delete the new os with the saved one, next time you restore, it may pick up your saved os - not sure, just a suspicion - might try it next time i get an os that works.

Hi, I upgraded to iOS 6 on my 4S running 5.1.1. soon after it went online. I wasn't really happy about the battery life as it would drop about 25% overnight which I couldn't accept. I restored back to iOS 5.1.1 from a back-up found on-line but the battery life is much worse then expected. I used to get up to 2 and a half day from single charge before the update, now I have to charge every night.

    Has anybody experienced this before?

    Thanks guys

It's a bug ios6 managing The battery level. After full charge night, it begin drain battery fast. Then at 92% I turned off iPhone, and when turned on it shows 99% battery.

Waiting for Apple upgrade to fix it.

Hi folks. I have been monitoring these forums about the battery drain on iOS 6 since its release on the 19SEP. This forum is now 35 pages and I thought I'll give my input. When iOS 5.1 was released the same issues were there then about the battery and iOS 6 is no different. Some folks have said to turn off Safari etc. but I am also experiencing the same battery drain on iOS 6 as I was on iOS 5.1.

My method is to disable 3G, enable Cellular data & switch on wifi when at home in your own wifi range and do exactly the opposite when out i.e switch off wifi, enable 3G & Cellular data. Cellar data being on 24x7 does not make any difference on the battery drain. It's the wifi & 3G ONLY which are the culprits.

Please note that all my notifications / locations services are off and my battery was depleting.

So go ahead and try it out for yourself and report on this forum.

Have tried the switching of wifi and 3G, still drained. My last effort was a full restore in DFU mode through iTunes, set up as new, no third party apps installed, pretty much all services off and a 9 hour overnight charge while switched off.

Still draining, this does not appear to be a 3G or wifi or safari or camera or whatever anyone else is suggesting other than the actual iOS 6 on selected phones. Presumably, we have to wait for a fix from Apple.

I called apple support to help with my hot phone and very poor battery life after upgrading to iO6.  They wanted to do a test to determine if the problem was hardware or software.  The asked me to do a

    1. system restore http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

    2. setup as new iphone

    3. do not sync.  do not connected with iTunes account.

I did this and my battery life is super.  So before after an hour I was down 10 to 20 % without using the phone.  My phone has been on Standby for 7 hours and battery has gone down 2%.  Location services are disabled.

However, all my contacts are gone, all my data is gone, all texts, all apps, photos, music, etc.  This does prove the iOS works on a new setup without killing the battery.

This also proves that the backup system is flawed whether from PC or iCloud.  They are blaming the backup as being 'corrupt'.  I am continuing to monitor performance and I will get a call from apple later today.  I will post how long my battery lasts when it finally dies.

This is not a solution if you care about your personal data - I don't look at this as a fix, just as a way to make your phone work as a phone with some battery life.

for me the issue was related to the new facebook sync... I removed my facebook account from the phone and I now have great battery life, at least as good as before.

    Usage: 1h26min

    Standby:  7h43min

and I have 84% remaining.... I'll pass on the facebook integration for now.

Let's face it kids.  The early adopters of new Apple hardware and software are guinea pigs and boy do we pay the price.  NONE of these solutions to the battery issue are acceptable. I repeat NONE.  If you have to cripple the phone to have even halfway decent battery life you are expecting miracles.  I am a BIG Apple fanboy and have upgraded my iPhone regularly but it's getting a little riduculous now.  Apple remains silent as they typically do while a great many people suffer with the worst battery life I have ever expereinced on an iPhone and that's saying a lot since it was NEVER good.  I am sure it will be addressed in a future (imminent?) software update but until then I am lucky to have a desk job and a spare charger with an extra lightening cable I bought. I have barely used the phone since getting to work at 7:30 and I already have ONLY 75% left. I am typing this on my desk computer.

Things seem to have changed a great deal since Steve's death and I'm pretty sure I don't like where it's heading.  Not that Steve was perfect but he was a "perfectionist".  Has that ceased to be the norm at Apple?  I also don't like Phil Schiller's purported comment that it is "acceptable and normal" for a brand new phone to get scuffed so easily as is happening on the new black iPhone 5.  Luckily I bought the white one where it doesn't seem to be an issue.  That is just a ridiculous response although Jobs had his own foot in mouth issue with the whole "bumpergate" fiasco telling people they were holding their phone wrong.  NO!! How about you actually DO some product testing to ensure these issues don't pop up and when they do how about you respond properly and with respect to the people who made your company the richest one on the planet??  It can't be because as Tim Cook said recently they "are doubling down on secrecy" because every single aspect of the new iPhone form factor etc was leaked way ahead of the official launch.  Apple can't keep a secret to save it's life in this day and age.  I used to love to be surprised and amazed at Steve's "one more thing" announcements.

It's sad to say that Apple has seemingly become the very thing that they rebelled against in the classic 1984 ad.  The new retail chief is sucking the magic out of that experience as well and looking to maximize profits even more at teh expense of the customer.  How much money does Apple really need?  Sadly Tim Cook seems to be supporting this shift in retail strategy or at least quietly condones it. It's just sad. Personally, I hope iOS 6.1 comes out soon and my battery issue gets better because I love the phone otherwise.  I never write to these boards but read them a lot.  I find them helpful for the most part but also realize that the norm for MOST people is to post to the boards ONLY when they want to ***** about something as oppose to praise it. It is human nature and I am only human, a very frsutrated one at that. The battery issue seems to be real for a lot of people and Apple is wrong and disingenuous to remain silent.  WE need to speak up and make it clear that this is NOT acceptable.  We need to demand a response.

Thanks for reading (if you did).  It felt good to vent. Sorry it was very long.

I agree with you Donald.  If I have to go thru the process of turning off every feature to get battery life to be better just to have a phone I would just go buy a flip phone and keep moving. I choose to have a phone that has email, syncing, 4G, Facebook, Camera, etc, etc and thats what I want it to do with similar battery life like I had before IOS6.

Also remember to do a reboot occasionally holding both the home/power buttons for 10 seconds. Can't say if it helps, but should flush the ram etc...
