Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

same issue for me, battery constantly draining without use

phone was on charge all last night (100%), i had a 2 minute browse through facebook this morning then put the phone on standby and went for a shower, 10 minutes later it's down to 86% connected to wifi

love my iPhone but it's not very "mobile" anymore as I have to keep it plugged in, which through PC USB takes forever to charge

Apple please sort it out, I refuse to disable everything on my phone to help the battery, it defeats the point of having it

I also have this issue I just got my iphone 4s on saturday and my battery dies veryyyy quickly. I have turned off all my applications and still it dies.I have charged my iphone all night resulting in 100 battery life and it is only 11:11am today and i have less then 20 percent battery life and I have only used it once or twice to text someone. Also when i was charging it last night the caution message came up saying my phone is too hot and it should cool down but i didnt have anything on it was just simply charging. This morning while it was in my coat pocket i took it out and it had the same message.

I am planning to bring it into an apple store but if anyone can give me an advice it would be helpful.

Well this morning my phone has been fine.  Still sitting at 100%.  The two things that to me seemed to make a difference was turning off the Location Services for Setting Time zone setting.  Also turning off my exchange connection from syncing my calendar.  I have since turned my calendar sync back on and no change to my battery life.

2 hours now, and been using it quite often and still sitting at 100%.  I don't know what to think now.  My iPhone did not seem to get hot really, maybe mildly warm when it was draining the battery.

    Hello,

I think there is a problem on the battery percentage indicator.

My iPhone keep showing 100% after half hour of use with 3G browsing. But at the exact moment it goes to 99%, I can see the indicator losing 1% each 2-3 minute of 3G browsing. Battery is fine in standy.

    iPhone 4s iOS6

    About usage:

Phone calls, listening to music, downloading and updating apps, checking e-mails, some text messages also sent.

Same here - iPhone 4s, 64GB.  Location services off, Bluetooth off, WiFi off, screen light very dim, clock setting manual.

One example: Battery at 13%. Without doing anything dropping to 11% after 1 (one!) minute. Going into settings. checking location settings, if I overlooked anything (took another minute, for sure less than 2 minutes): Down from 11% to 5 %.

    I am clueless!

On Sept 19 I did installed iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 using OTA and experienced the Wi-Fi and battery issues discussed here and in other threads.  Yesterday my battery dropped over 60% in about 45 minutes just listening to music.

So last night I connected the phone to iTunes (latest version on 2011 iMac) via cable and did a factory install of iOS 6.  When asked by iTunes if I wanted to backup before installing the new iOS I said "yes".  The new copy of iOS 6 was significantly bigger than the OTA version, so there may be something different there.

Anyway, I let iTunes do the iOS 6 install and bring my personal data back from the backup. I then charged the phone up to 100%, unplugged it and went to bed.  This morning (7 hours later) I had 94% charge left.  My "usage time" also went up about 20 minutes over night while I slept, so the phone apparently did something other than just sit idle. I charged it back to 100% and loaded some music from iCloud during breakfast then headed to work.  After listening to music for almost 2 hours, my charge was still at 99%.  I turned off the music and left then phone sit idle for 2 hours.  Still at 99% charge.

I didn't turn off anything that I normally use and didn't disable any features in any way.  I paid for a fully functioning phone and that is how I intend to use it.  IMO the battery had better be able to keep up.

I think there may have been something with the OTA version of the iOS 6 update that is causing the problem.  A fresh install of iOS 6 and a restore of my backed up data while connected to the computer seems to have solved my battery issue. YMMV.

My new iPhone 5 gets here tonight.  If I have battery issues with it I intend to try the above solution and will post back with anything new that pops up.

Day three.  So far my battery life seems to have improved.  The first day it was awful.  I could sit and watch the percentage drop down every few minutes.

I turned off everything I didn't need, locations, notificatoins, Siri raise to talk, iAds, etc.  Got a little better, percantage drop rate slowed to about 2% per every five minutes.

I let the battery run down to under 10% and charged it over night.  That seems to have done the trick.  Yesterday I took my phone off the charger at 6 am and at 11 pm when I went to bet it was at 35%.  I used my phone as I normally would, in fact more than I normally would because I am still looking through the new interface and trying to spot the 200 new things they added.  I think this is as good or better than I was getting with iOS 5.1.1.

So far today I have had the phone off the charger for about 4.5 hours and am down to 20%.  I have looked up stuff in safari, received texts, updated several app from the app store, updated facebook and read twitter feed, etc.  Normal day for me.

I think the issue is that the battery meter firmware needs to be set with a full charge so it can get an accurate read.

I have noticed though that when I am on a Wifi connection using Safari the power does go down a bit faster than it did using 5.1.1.  Not drasticaly fast but there is a noticable drop when surfing the web on Wifi.

    bphil1,

I just connected the iPhone to the computer, selected it in iTunes, selected the "Summary" page for the phone, and then clicked on the button that said "restore to factory settings" or some variation of that wording.  It asked if I wanted to backup first, I said "yes", and the computer took it from there.

After it downloaded the iOS and put it on the phone, iTunes asked if I wanted to set-up as a new phone or restore from backup.  I selected the restore from backup option and it used the backup it made earlier.

A lot of commentors have talked about setting it up as a "new phone" but I didn't find it necessary to do that.

100% agree.  Even with 5.1.1 we had these so called 'fixes' of disabling certain features in order to compensate for this issue.  5.1.1 certainly does much better in battery time - this is the main reason I rolled back to 5.1.1 from 6 (while it was still possible to do so).

That first day I had 6.0 on my 4s I experienced nothing but excessive data usage (even though I was connected to wifi and @ home), a rapidly draining battery and a very warm to the touch phone - and just in case someone wants to know, I performed a clean install via iTunes vs. OTA update.  I would have given 6.0 a couple of days but due to the time window which Apple typically allows before signing is killed on a previous iOS release, I decided to roll back to 5.1.1 in order to have a phone which I could use without being tethered to a charger throughout the day.  So glad I did since now its basically impossible to roll back.

Apple, PLEASE look into the battery drain issue and let us know you are looking at it.  I and many others have been sending feedback via the online form in addition to posting here.

I can overlook the Maps fiasco but to kill device battery life due to a buggy iOS release, well that's just not sitting well with your customer base.

My upgraded my iPhone to iOS 6, as well. It's working well for me, but I don't have data or bluetooth on... I am just hoping that Apple hears some of what we are saying and fix it for the next upgrade. I don't know if anyone would agree to this, but I think Apple should make different templates for the music/ iPod part.. I don't really like the new lay out, but I guess I'll get used to that.
