Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

Appears there is a fix for batter drain on iPhone 5 ==> http://www.macrumors.com/2012/10/01/verizon-iphone-5-customers-will-not-be-charg ed-for-inadvertent-cellular-data-usage-issue/

I wonder if they are planning to get a fix for the 4s?

I doubt this is what we need, it fixes 1 issues for sure but I am having battery issues without high data transfers which i keep very well monitored.

Eeveryone (I just replied to last poster--SandroD):

I don't know how Apple got me, one of the techs from Apple called me and asked me about battery drain, and I guess they found it from this forum.  So, sooner or later you will be called.  All they do is to ask you few questions, and send you a file (batter logging profile) from your phone and to collect your data in two days, she will call me back in two days. (then I will have itunes ready by then)

I am using iphone 4 and it still drains, but it does not drain as much as idling. When it is idle, it can last like 18 hours, but if I ever touch it and read it or use it, 1% in 2 to 3 mins. easy.  I joked to her and saying ..  Since Apple won the lawsuit from SamSung, can Apple just send me new Iphone 5 instead... Well, she just smiled...

Anyway, I think this time is tougher than Apple thought....  I really don't see the sense of collecting data helps, but I let them do it anyway and see what they can do.  They probably just want to get a statistic of how, why and what model of phones cause the drain. Maybe, they will come up with something in the next updates.  However, I would not see it in the near weeks... Probably a month or two....

Meanwhile, I start charging once or twice a day ....

If I have to turn off almost everything.. that really defeats the purpose of having iphone.. I may as well go back to a flip phone without data... that one lasts a week without charging.

I guess the only one NEW feature of IOS 6 Apple didn't mention is called...

Fast Battery Drain!!  Not too many smartphones can't beat that!

I have 7 gmail, 2 hotmail and 1 yahoo accounts all configured to push..  Battery was about 12 hours on ios 5 and 3 on ios 6.  The battery gauge looked like a gas gauge in a Hummer.   After I turned the fetch to off, it became a Prius.  I hope someone looks at the mail module.

Turn off push mail: If you have a push mail account such as Yahoo! or Microsoft Exchange, turn off push when you don't need it. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and set Push to Off. Messages sent to your push e-mail accounts will now be received on your phone based on the global Fetch setting rather than as they arrive.

I just wanted to add in what I have seen on my iPhone 4S since updating to iOS 6.

When idle, my battery seems to be normal. No drain from any background items running.

However, just doing something like browsing the web I am losing about 1% every 2-3 minutes.

    My settings are as follows:

    Location Services OFF

    Wi Fi OFF

    Mail/Contacts.Calendar Fetch OFF

    Mail Push OFF

Current Apps in Multi Task bar: Messages, Settings, Safari

    Auto Lock 2 MIN

    Bluetooth OFF

    Do Not Disturb OFF

All notifications except AMBER and Emergency OFF

    Brightness 50%

iCloud Sync for Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Safari, Passbook, Photo Stream, Documents, Find My iPhone        are ON

    iCloud Backup ON

I have done a hard reset on the phone. I charge each night while I sleep. I do not charge during the day.

Hopefully this will help the techs a bit.

    Best,

    Wyldhare

Having followed this thread closely over the last week, I have tried almost everything to improve battery life on my iPhone 4s.

    • Switching off Siri, location services, Facebook, Safari, etc. - no difference
    • Resetting phone, completing full charge cycles - no difference
    • Handset replaced at Genius Bar, restored off iTunes backup - no difference
    • And I hate the idea of restoring phone as new and losing all my data - that's part of the reason I haven't left Apple

However, the Genius Bar technician suggested that there may be a problem with Exchange Mail. So I removed all email accounts (except iCloud) and voila! Battery life back to normal. However, as soon as I added back my work exchange account with push, battery life became shocking once more. And I can't see any point setting it up as a fetch account because I need to be alerted to new work emails immediately, and have a separate handset for this purpose (which I would prefer not to have to carry with me at all times, but I guess that's the trade off for better battery life on my personal handset).

Looks like (in my case), excessive battery drain was being caused by an exchange email account.

So won't be using mail on my phone until Apple finds a fix. Hard to see large corporations switching from Blackberry to Apple if there are such major issues post upgrade of software, and bugs in the email function!

I wonder if it is just exchange accounts or any of the email services? I run hotmail, which is not an exchange account, but maybe iOS treats it similarly?

It could be a broader issue with the entire mail application, I am not sure. The only account I am running at the moment is iCloud and I am not experiencing any significant drain. But I will try adding Hotmail and then Gmail account and observe the impact. The Genius Bar tech mentioned exchange accounts as being particularly problematic though.

Similar to all, battery life is less than 6 hours even when on standby.

Attempts: battery drain to zero, waited for about a half hour, plugged in - when checked the next morning (>8 hours of charge time), battery only showed 97%, it's maximum for that day.  Since that time, it has hit 100%, but it was odd that the battery only got to 97% while plugged in.

Tied to shut off notifications.  No luck.

Shut off Siri raise to speak option, no luck.

Hard reset several times, no luck.

    Soft reset.  No luck.

Closed all apps and set on standby. No luck.  Still drained.

Shut off Bluetooth and wifi.  Still no luck - this made the charge last longer, but only to about 8 hours.

Today, as I was checking email, I watched the meter drop 3 percent while working on the phone for about 5 minutes.

Still watching posts, waiting for any further ideas.

So my wife and I both have 4s phones. I upgraded both to ios6. We both have exchange email on push, and all other settings identical. I use my phone a lot more during the day. We both unplugged this morning and did not charge during the day, after 13 hours my phone 81% her phone 25% battery.

I can't see the clear issue here.

Apple- not convincing me. I played with the Samsung today. I think the lawsuit doesn't matter.

Are you both using the same exchange server? It may be a server specific issue, with only some servers causing problems post the upgrade.

I have now re-addded the problematic exchange account with manual updating and still experiencing great battery life. Will try fetch next, and then push and see how it goes.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you might want to log out of the iTunes and Apps stores.  That was the culprit of battery drainage on my iPhone, although it was not running iOS 6 at the time.

Go to SETTINGS>iTunes & Apps Stores>click on your email address>Sign Out

Would love to hear if that helps.

Apple called me tonight as well and installed the monitoring softare.

First let me roport on my battuery usage today after turning off Cellular Date while at work: I found that I used less battery while on standby. This is somewhat good news, but while using wifi I saw the quick battery drain.

Second, I've been monitororing my data  usage via AT&T's star service *data#. Tonight I decided to check data usage again (last checked Sept 26), and see that i've had a 500MB spike in data usage over the past 5 days. In the past 12 months, my peak data usage was in July, and I barely reached 1GB for the entire month, but I still have have 19 days to go on this bill cycle and have already exceeded 1GB. Looking at my data usage chart on AT&T's website, I average 400MB to 600MB each month (I use alot of wifi throughout my day). I'm not to worried, becuase i have the grandfathered unlimited plan from AT&T., but I just might get throttled this month. :-(

Third, this evening, my auto-lock failed to work again after the 1 minute (which I have it set to), and while in my pocket my phone got very warm to the point I had to take it out and set it down to cool. This heat could be a result of the screen was still being on and in my pocket. However, my phone never got that warm before when I set my phone's auto-lock to never and put it in my pocket, so something else was also doing overtime work at the same time.

    Please
What is Apple's answer to that? Exactly
    Battery will solve the problem?
