Q: iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

I didn't charge my battery last night when I went to bed, and I only lost 4 to 5% overnight. However, I went out this morning for breakfast and read my emails, checked Facebook, and  my battery depleated 10% using Cellular Data. I've been on wifi since I got home. In under two hours, I've lost ~22% for what I would consider "light use" for me. I am used to only losing ~3-5% under these same conditions with 5.1.1. I hope Apple can narrow down the draining issue with this monitor app they installed on my phone last night. ::fingers crossed::

UPDATE: My battery is draining like mad!! My battery was at 32%, got a phone call that lasted 2 minutes and now I'm at 17% with only the Settings app running in the multi-task bar.

In three hours I've lost ~55-60%. AHHHHHH...

I didn't come to this forum until I had the upgrade to iOS 6 (on 4S) for a week. Yes, my battery drain problems started happening right away. Routinely, the battery now discharges so quickly that if I don't have it plugged into 'something' it is useless as a phone. I charge it mostly from the wall, to the person who keeps saying that changes anything. And to the person who says that we should let the battery drain completely, mine is doing that all by itself several days a week, so that isn't a solution. Since others have already said that a reset has no effect I won't bother trying that. I have already turned off everything possible (location, wifi, bluetooth, notifications, privacy, push mail, apps in background, etc., including the phone itself), and nothing has had a positive impact.

I have no intention of going to an Apple store and standing in line or waiting for hours for some idiot to finally throw their hands up and say they don't know what is going on. I am going to assume that Apple will fix this, and that they will do it for free, for everyone affected, or they will be slapped with a class action law suit that will make them take notice. In the meantime, my phone is useless.

I had battery problems within a day of installing iOS 6, and they're ongoing.

But what really got me was a huge increase in cellular data on the second day. Pushed me over my (admittedly low) limit, costing me an additional $15. I have no idea what app was causing it, but possibly the Podcasts app as it was the first time I began using it. Phone got hot, too, during this time, and battery tanked by noon.

There's more to this than just battery. It's made me nervous about using my phone, which is really annoying (and not why I pay a huge amount of money to have an iPhone instead of an iPod Touch).

I hope the battery log I made for Apple helps them sort this out....

Update: I charged my phone when I got to work and then turned off all running apps (including mail). Then I looked at the phone every hour. It has been 5 hours and the phone is still at 100%. I briefly opened mail, read a message, and then turned mail off. I suspect that mail or one of the other apps I had open is doing something bad. I'll keep watching it.

I have an IPhone4 and and Ipad2 and interestingly, since the IOS6 update, my phone is draining like a sieve and the ipad is fine. I have tried every reset mentioned, including the hard reset, and haven't reloaded the info, trying to think of everything possible, since I had no problems before the update. So I wiped everything off the phone, and its still draining while I watch! Apple really needs to do something about this, before lots of people get fed up and move on. Turning off all the apps that worked fine before, really defeats the purpose of having the phone, and right now, the Galaxy S3 is starting to look good!

Just like to be added to list. Have been experiencing the same battery power loss ever since iOS6 upgrade.

Trying things that people have posted to no evale:( Hopefully Apple will make a comment to this issue.)

I 've noticed during start up, Apple has made a point of emphasizing its iOS6! , perhaps due to the lack of  use, and that I'm sure is responsible for the battery loss overall. Maybe reverting back to pervious iOS5 would be better for a period of time, then finding out things done work anymore? The control of Apple! I thought at one time no big deal, now I wonder!

Mine is doing very good in stand by mode now that I've reset and disabled a few things.

Actually much better than before the update, in stand by.

I have iTunes Match and I noticed using the phone to listen to music that's already downloaded even or browsing Safari causes battery to plummet again, like it's constantly checking the cloud or trying to synch something.  I do synch bookmarks but it shouldn't need so many synch attempts or whatever it seems, just browsing.  It should only check once in a long while, unless I actually create or use bookmarks I think.  Likewise with iTunes Match.

It seemed like previously, if I was just listening to music already downloaded locally, even with iTunes Match enabled, it wasn't as much of a drain.

In iOS 5, iTunes Match would download songs to play or you could download them individually.  If you clicked to download them, they would stay on your phone.

In iOS 6, it appears that unless you download all content, your content will always be cached and will re-stream if the song has expired from the cache.

24 hours now and turning off mail push has largely rectified the issue for me.  Was burning through a 100% battery in about 4-5 hours before.

I have turned location services, bluetooth etc back on and battery seems ok.   It does seem though if I keep the mail app on in the multi-task bar that still creates the drain.   So I need to turn it on, let mail upload and then close it from the multi-task bar once I am done.

    That is so unfortunate.

One of the things that distinguished iOs was its superior management of backgrounded apps.

With Android you're always needing to pay attention to what's open in the background, transmitting your data, messing with your device, and contentiously closing apps so they don't use up your data and power.

I know this Apple's attempt to allow more going on in the background, but users need more control then over what apps can process what in the background then.  Android has that but I still choose iOS because I don't have to worry so much, or at least I didn't.

If Apple let's apps like Facebook run in the background we need control to easily specify what apps are able to run in the background then, and what they're allowed to do.

iOS doesn't let you see what's using up your battery or data, but it's never needed to.  I've never had this issue before now.  It was always an issue with Android, but I preferred Apple's refined control.

If Apple lets apps do more in the background now, it needs to give info and settings to diagnose and tame those apps that run rampant.

after that i started to use it, and watching my percantage above, found it ok even after 2 hours without using seemed still 100%

    I really hope not.

That takes major control of your music library away, and negates the reason to buy the larger storage space.

iOS used to be all about you and your device, and now it feels so Microsoft Googley, even keystrokes in Safari seem lagged to phone home to the mother ship.

Apple is better than this I believe.  They're the only company actually calling customers to fix battery life.

Still, it seemed like they jumped into replacing google too fast.  Google is a company built on disrespecting privacy to provide "free" stuff you pay for by becoming the product instead of the customer.

There is no denying they have mastered stuff going on in the background you're not even aware of though.

What's the right balance of customer control and convenience?
