Hi! I was one of the poor saps that went to the Apple store and they actually offered me a new iPhone 4S to replace my current phone with the battery drain problem. Since the replacement I still have the same battery drain issues Related to iOS 6 update. Apple has not contacted me, but I feel that this is been one huge mess.
Hiya I posted a while back and think i have found a cure - well it has cured my power drain:
1st update the phone via iTunes as a new phone (dont forget to back up then you can restore)
2nd reset your phone to defaults and restore your backup.
3rd power cycle charge the phone twice - what i mean is charge the phone battery overnight whilst the phone is off this will ensure a complete full charge without interruptions. NOTE DO NOT USE WHILST CHARGING THIS IS IMPORTANT
4th after a full overnight charge USE THE PHONE AS NORMAL BUT NOW DO NOT PLUG THE PHONE IN TO TOP UP THE BATTERY - AND YOU MUST USE THE PHONE UNTIL IT DIES COMPLETELY.
5th Now let the phone cool down for at least an hour then recharge overnight again as noted above and repeat this process for 2 complete recharge and dishcarge cycles.
My battery was restored to normal operating temperatures and duration. I hope it works for you too.
ps apple did contact me but by the time they did i solved my problem using the technique above and told them what i did too, they are listening and were very interested in my solution.
I was lucky that with Apple Care, they had made extensive notes and although my battery tested ok, my usage was beyond disgusting. They replaced it and the rep installed iOS 6 from iTunes. It hasn't helped but I felt better knowing Apple was forking over money to give me a new device. Sadly, the joke is on me: my battery still drains like crazy.
I hate the thought of it because I've absolutely been in love with all of my Apple devices-iPhone, iPad, MacBook, but I've been considering purchasing a new phone in the next few months. I just assumed, I'd get an iPhone, but not so sure now that it looks like Apple has Windows 95'd. Have heard Samsung is really good. Guess I shouldn't have been so iPhone arrogant MacBook is still great, but you can bet I won't be upgrading if an upgrade comes out!!!
I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 the day after it was released. I immediately saw a huge drop off in battery life. I didn't think much of it as I was up for an upgrade I a few weeks. I figured the phone is 2 years old and I use it for hours daily, especially maps and locations services since I travel for work.
I upgraded to the 4S hoping that would solve some of my battery issues. The 4S is as bad as the 4 was after upgrading to iOS 6. I am going to cycle the battery a few times to see if I can get some type of improvement. So far mums the word from Apple too, which is more frustrating than anything.
I am going to downgrade my old 4 to iOS 5.1.1 and see what happens. I won't have the cellular service but I can use it all day on the wifi and see what happens.
This is really dissapointing Apple.
I am very surprised.
Doesn't Apple know their responsiveness to this affects customer loyalty, and their lack of response makes their defenders and supporters look foolish?
If they can't fix it now they need to advise customers not to update or make a public statement what to do if you're "hit" with the bug. If they can fix it, they still need to acknowledge and apologize.
Don't they realize every second they wait to publicly acknowledge and give guidance and help bleeds away their image and takes away from any zero-day lines?
Just wait till Android gets a hold of this PR nightmare.
Android is going to release a commercial in the next few days with a bunch of iPhone users huddled around an outlet in the airport and squinting into their screens because the screen is so dark. The Android users will mock them while the iPhone users brag about how great the new iOS is.
I know this because it is exactly what happened 2 days ago at LaGuardia New York airport. There were 10 or more iPhone users (myself included) huddled around the few power outlets waiting their turn to charge their phones. It was 2:00 pm.
A few GS3 users were across from the group of us. One walked over and offered his outlet splitter so that 2 more of us could charge at a time.
I have spent 3 days working on ios6 problems and gone through 2 replaced phones. iphone is so much fun I probably would have waited through anything, but this is a support failure where apple has chosen to ignore its loyal customers. My impression after hours of talking to support; The tech guys will do anything to help you including passing out new iphone 4s but none of it works. once they send you to somebody at a higher level and you complain about lack of support They repeated the same thing every time. My phone works fine on IOS6 I dont know about any problems. Every converstaion ended with the impression that Apple really no longer cares about customer trust.
Initially - my phone just totally died for every second day - pc / itunes wouldnt even recognise it as a usb device. WIth Apple help I got it back kind of so now Im just like everyone else - turned off everything thats good and it still goes down quicker than my bank account. The whole battery meter thing is stuffed - goes down to 1 % quickly sometimes, but will then keep running for a ouple of hours - then the other side once on charge it went from 24% to 100% in less than 5 minutes.
Hence frustrated, so while I was avoiding it, Ill try the full new phone an restore steps as you describe - question - how do I update it as a new phone - as son as its plugged into Itunes it recognises it and the only options are restore to factory or sync???
PS - for everyone else - yep this has done me in- we have 5 Iphones and 3 Ipads in this house, I dont have a tablet and was going to get an ipad for my birthday - I went and bought a samsung today - just over it!
I bought my first iPhone one week ago.
I also have the batterij drain issue. Charged my phone overnight til 100% while it was turned of.
Now I am 50 minutes on 3G reading this treath and I'm on 50%. Ios 6 was on the phone when I received it from Apple.
I feel sad since this is a new phone. My girlfriend has the same phone for 1 month (iPhone 4) and updated to Ios6 after it has been released. Funny how she experience no problemd at all. With the same settings!!
Ps: my Iphone is that hot I could light a fire with it.
I'm worried that this may cause hardware dammage.
I too make the mistake upgrading (or should that be downgrading!) my iPhone 4 to iOS 6.
Battery life became horrible. It would drain to approximately 50% within a 6 hour period with very little or no use. I've now "upgraded" back to iOS 5.1.1. Battery life is now 87% after 14 hours and I now have the added bonus of Google Maps also!
