how to merge phone number with imessage on 10.8.2

i updated to 10.8.2 and i had already been using imessage on 10.8.1 and before. i went to imessage and there is no option or alert or anything to add my phone number to it. i use the same apple id on my iphone and receive imessages at both my apple id email address and phone number. i have tried signing out, deleting all my messages, ive tried signing out restarting my macbook pro and signing back in, still nothing. any way to manually set it up or refresh the account?

update: i guess everyone says i need to update my iphone to ios6 first. i'm just going to wait for my iphone5 on friday to set this up as im not yet going to update to ios6 on my 4S

HI,

You are correct.

iOS 6 and OS X 10.8.2 gets the Phone and the Mac to then ask and confirm if you want to use the Phone Number on the Mac.

I had the Computer update first then Updated the iPhone and was Asked if I wanted to add the Phone Number.

Finally! Disabling and re enabling both iMessages and FaceTime on my iPhone was the key to getting Messages and iMessage to work on my Mac, iPad and iPhone. Thank you.

My desktop running 10.8.2 and iPhone5 (with iOS6) are playing nicely with iMessage, but there is no place to enter my iphone number on my NEW iPad with iOS6 for iMessage... is there?

I want my number to be my primary iMessage address, is this possible with an iPad? Thanks

Thanks Darren, that worked great for me.

I disabled and re-enabled on my phone first, and then I did it on all my other devices and I started getting the prompts. Thanks a lot.

On the iPhone 5 unlink the Apple ID to the iPhone Number.

Then re-link the Apple ID to the iPhone number

This worked for me too. Make sure you sign out of iMessage on your make. When you signed back in my phone number got verified with an iMessage on my phone.

Nice job Durwood. Your tip for disabling iMessage on the phone then reenabling iMessage was key. It work right away and recognized multiple emails and the phone number. Thanks a bunch.

This one I can solve. In the early 80's anyone named Darren turned into Durwood because of a little show called bewitched. The mother in law on the show always butchered his name.

I just threw it out there to see if it would stick.

So, I don't have my imac desktop updated to the latest OS, and I didn't upgrade my iphone to 6 because I'd like the more bugs to work out first. Plus, I don't want to lose my google maps.

Is this why my ipad which I did upgrade won't allow me to enter my phone number? It's driving me nuts.

Yes you need the combo of Mac OS X 10.8.2 and the iOS 6 on the iOS Devices.

To clarify:

I just tried the xxx-xxx-xxxx format and it didnt work even after turning off/on my imessage on my iphone. But after entering the x-xxx-xxx-xxxx format and turning off/on again on my iphone it worked within seconds. Hope this helps.

I'm using iphone 4s iOS 6, macbook pro, 10.8.2 🙂
