Sep 21, 2012 8:17 PM in response to ThisDrJonesby Greg Killmaster,I just fixed mine by updating to the latest Netgear firmware. I tried everything else and nothing worked but this. Been working on this for 2 days. Apple tech people didn't recommend that for some reason...

Sep 22, 2012 9:26 AM in response to MicahBurkeby gravestone myth,One of my clients (I'm an IT guy) upgraded both his iPad 3 and his iPhone 4s and immediately had the problem. His home network has several Netgear WG102 access points, all on the latest firmware. I upgraded my 16GB wifi-only iPad 3 to test and, sure enough, I lost the ability to connect to any of the SSID's on my Netgear WG102 access points. I set up an open network but it fails on that one too. I wifi tethered my Android phone and strangely enough it worked. This really stinks... I told my client to try connecting elsewhere. I'm getting the impression Apple is silently releasing a fix but you can't get it if you can't connect. BTW, I've tried every suggestion in every post I can find. The wifi suddenly got incredibly fussy in ios6. Thank goodness for Android...
Netgear uses the Atheros wireless chipset. I wonder if this is the common thread?

Sep 23, 2012 4:59 AM in response to MicahBurkeby gravestone myth,As a follow up, I wanted to confirm the issue being certain Netgear access points and/or routers. More specifically, it may be any access point with the Atheros chipset and a particular firmware release. My WG102 access points have been downgraded from 5.03 to 5.00 and my iPad now connects. This is great for home or office users, but these access points are PoE so they're very popular with public hotspots. Lots of folks are going to have problems they simply cannot solve.
Here's a list of wireless devices with the Atheros chipset. If yours is on the list, try to change your firmware. http://atheros.rapla.net/

Sep 23, 2012 6:18 AM in response to MicahBurkeby ArgyStar,The workaround is very simple but Apple will have to pay me for the many infuriating hours I've spent working on the problem!
Not sure if it's confined to Netgear equipment but that's what I have and the workaround is fine. The bug is still in iOS6 but at least I now know what the bug is!
Sorry to tease everyone who still has the problem but I don't see why I should give Apple the benefit of my efforts when they can't fix it and won't even publicly acknowledge that they have stuffed up!

Sep 23, 2012 8:05 AM in response to MicahBurkeby mikac74,Well on on a D-Link DIR 615 router. I think I've isolated the problem on my end and not sure if my router is using the same chipset as mentioned above but with me it's seems to be that I can maintain connectivity to the net UNTILL I try to download something that downloads or streams a larger number of packets. Downloading apps, magazines or streaming video will "choke" me off the net(though not my actual network) and I have to turn off and on my wifi on my iPad to reconnect to the net. When I do the above mentioned on my neighbours open linksys router, I'm never choked off the net and can download or stream no problem.
Maybe it's the router/chipset as mentioned above or maybe something to do with WPA/WPA2 where something goes wonky on a secure wireless connection that's not happening on an unsecured wireless connection.
Either way Apple better hurry up with a fix soon cause is like having a half bricked iPad!!!

Sep 24, 2012 4:31 AM in response to mikac74by bbluvva,We have a Netgear WG102 in the office and two of us were affected by the same issue. After downgrading the firmware to 5.0.1, we were able to connect.
Considering version 5.0.3 contains various security fixes/patches, this isn't an ideal solution.
As this is an issue affecting other router brands, which had been working fine pre-iOS6, I'd say this is an Apple issue that they need to stop acting as if it's non-existent and fix!

Sep 24, 2012 4:33 AM in response to MicahBurkeby gravestone myth,The DIR-615 also uses the Atheros chipset. Incidentally, my problem did not change when using an open SSID so I don't think it's related to WEP or WPA/WPA2.

Sep 24, 2012 5:07 AM in response to MicahBurkeby gravestone myth,FYI, the WG102NA 5.03 firmware update included a fix from Atheros regarding the infamous "stuck beacon" issue.

Sep 24, 2012 6:29 AM in response to MicahBurkeby mikac74,Ok, seems a firmware upgrade to my router (DIR 615) has fixed it so far. Stupid router itself said it was at the most upto date firmware (3.11) with it's own "check now" button, but a quick google search shows there was newer firmware available(3.12). So far, no choking off my net connection!!

Sep 24, 2012 7:28 AM in response to MicahBurkeby Roundbob,This is clearly an IOS 6 issue. I have two iPad 3. One for my wife and mine. I updated this morning to IOS 6 and in settings I clearly see the network but when I select it, get message "Unable to join the network "ROBERT1" (yeah I know - a real original network name),with only the button to DISMISS. My wife's iPad still on IOS 5 works fine on the network as does my printer and two iMacs as well as my TV. The network is fine. But to be sure I powered down the router and the iPad. After pouring a cup of coffee and grumpling to my wife, powered the router back up then the iPad (oh yeah, i cleared the history and cokkies earlier) and got the same result. Other devices all work on the router fine. So what is left? What is different? Yup - it is IOS 6. Of course, now I can not get on a network then to apple - so when they fix the problem, how do I get it since I can not get on the internet? Then sounds like a Microsoft problem, not one I expect from Apple.

Sep 24, 2012 7:37 AM in response to Roundbobby bbluvva,If/when Apple fixes the issue, you'll just need to plug into iTunes.
I didn't quite get why you'd expect issues like this from MS and not Apple. Maybe you don't do technical support so don't experience the many things that Apple always breaks with new OSes and arrogantly pretend it's not a bug or that others should just work around it by buying Apple accessories; e.g. when Lion broke NAS Time Capsule and SMB functionality. Or more issues with Mountain Lion and browsing SMB shares.
Apple is cool but just another company with humans employed. Last time I checked, all humans are fallible. ;-)

Sep 24, 2012 3:21 PM in response to Roundbobby gravestone myth,Roundbob,
You should be able to connect elsewhere. I tested mine by tethering to my Android phone and confirmed it at McDonalds. It's just the Atheros chipset devices that have a particular firmware that'll prevent you from getting WiFi. They still need to fix it - lots of Hotels have these AP's.

Sep 24, 2012 3:56 PM in response to MicahBurkeby blackrob7904,I had the same problem again when I was looking at someone's iPad today. After I turned off the auto-join it connected without any problems.
