    This worked beautifully for me.

So is this still ongoing? New iPad 4 here with iOS 6 and my auto-brightness doesn't work and hasn't worked straight out of the box. I've tried all the suggestions in this thread to no avail.

Is this for sure an OS problem or is it a hardware problem? Sigh.

Thank you.  That worked for me on my iPad3.

I am beginning to think it is a hardware problem.  A co-worker recently bought an iPhone 5 and his auto-brightness toggle displays as you would expect while mine is missing.  I have rebooted my phone and it shows up, then my phone will auto reboot a couple of times and then the toggle is gone again.  Very frustrating.

Its bloody irritating when it doesnt work. and specially when there are many things that are wrong at the same time. iOS6 Is more bugged than a dirty unwashed mattress. Iphone5 plus ios6 are at major discomfort

    • Auto Brightness gets stuck at places, sometime too dark and sometimes too bright
    • Wifi - Have to enter the username and password again and again
    • Camera on the iphone 5 clicks photos, but they are not end to end in the gallery
    • My black iphone 5 has started peeling color after 3 weeks
    • while switching from headphone to the phone, there are times when it doesnt switch smoothly, sometimes gets stuck on headphone mode even after several minutes after pulling out the jack.
    • Messages refuse to switch to imessage mode after full cellular or wifi coverage, still sends message as text
    • Maps - Well there isnt much to say here.
    • They have to do something about the battery life. i charge my phone 4 times a day to get through 18 hours of usage.

workds fine for me now on ios 6..0.1, you can watch the slider in brightness setting move towards minimum when moving into darker areas

  • turbocowboy Level 1 Level 1

JUst my 2 cents. Ipad3 ios 6.01 works as described. Turn brightness all the way to minimum, auto to off, then back on. Holding up the iPad to a lamp I see the slider go brighter by itself, then when in a dimmer part of the room I see the slider slowly go towards minimum. Good tip here on getting autobrighness working again!

now the 6.1 is out and i still don't have auto brightness working. still goes well up and doesn't go down whatever i try

Same problem here (iOS 6.1 iPad 3) auto brightness doesn't work but the auto annoyance does. The brightness gets stuck at every level once it has reached the set value for a given sensor measurement. Try it with different distances from the light source, once the slider stops adjusting upwards hold it for a couple of seconds before moving moving it away or turning the light off, it will stay at that screen brightness until screen lock. And what about it adjusting brightness upwards a notch in a completely dark room? Is this bug only on the iPad 3 ?

  • Adriano1k988 Level 1 Level 1

Mine never ever adjusts when the light in the room gets dimmer or i go to a darker room. Yes, I tried the thing above. It only works if you don't expose the sensor in the iPad for a couple more seconds after it has reached the set value. Now it gets stuck and doesn't adjust down anymore.

So this is why it's called the Retina Display,...I see (no more)

Has anyone found a solution for this? I'm having the same problem that many others are having. The brightness will adjust up in a bright room but will not go back to dim in a dark room. I tried the 3 step process to fix a few times and it has not helped.

Has anyone tried a restore? I was working fine before I upgraded to 6.1.

  • Whitenoise2013 Level 1 Level 1

I've got the same issue. The brightness only increase with auto brightness enabled on my ipad 4. Actually it has ios 6.0 out o the box. So it never worked as it should. I've upgraded to 6.1.  Still doesn't work. I suppose we just need to wait till it's fixed in the new ios.

  • An_Intensive_CareBear97 Level 1 Level 1

The thing is though, we've been saying that for allot of past iOS generations. ('We just need to wait until it's fixed in the new iOS') It makes me wonder if Apple will ever fix it.

  • iSRS Level 1 Level 1

I thought it was fine prior to iOS 6.  Part of me wonders if it is partially due to the new iPod which has no sensor anyway...

  • hedgert Level 1 Level 1

The "fix" of putting brightness to minimum then turn auto off/Noah's got my iPhone 4S working, but it has no effect at all on my iPad2 - where the brightness level stubbornly sits at minimum whatever the brightness level (while the iPhone 4S sitting right next to it self-adjusts).  But given other posts above about it not working on a 4S I guess whether it works or does is subject something else - so the mystery continues.
