Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

Like many here, you sort of got this the wrong way round. It's not Apple wielding their power, it's Google wielding theirs. Google have been using their licensing to stop Apple using GoogleMaps to make a better product. By preventing Apple from adding functions like turn-by-turn navigation they have tried to lock Apple at a stage inferior to Android.

Apple had a difficult choice. Either stay with GoogleMaps and slowly watch Android pull ahead with no retort, or to develop their own mapping product.

The problem is though, a global mapping product to the standard of GoogleMaps takes years to develop and requires an active user community to tune. You can't just roll one out ready made. Not can you go buy an equivalent to StreetView, if we want that Apple will have to go collect the data with cars as google did, and that will take years too.

So Apple may seem arrogant here, but they were ****** if they do and ****** if they don't. So in the end they opted for the long term option.

And let's not forget Googles lack of ethics in how they collected the Map data; collecting Wifi SSIDs, passwords and email data. This is a corporation that has few qualms in their quest to dominate despite the interests of their users.

And if you still want GoogleMaps, you still have access to it via the browser (excluding StreetView which requires Flash). So is this really as big an issue as its being made out to be?

You make very valid points but at least Apple should have developed the maps software further before deploying permanantly on millions of iOS devices. Why release something that is not even half baked. Perhaps making it Beta therefore allowing the turn by turn feature and at the same time keeping the Google maps app on iOS.

Will resort to Google maps on safari in for now

My devices are all Apple - MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone. I did not think this day would come, when 2-3 times a day, I am looking for directions or opening one of the apps I use most (maps), I curse my phone for not working! It is not working anywherenin Asia. The data is simply missing.

iPhone was important and central to me - now, I wish I had something else at least twice a day, when my phone, instead of helping me, wastes my time, my money and irritates me with its stupid Map results.

Apple must immediately get the old app back or pay Google or anybody else wherever it costs to get their Maps data to the same level as Google's. Crappy maps = crappy smart phone.

It's not just the actual maps App unfortunately. Many third party Apps rely on Google Maps which is now denied to them. These Apps are now rendered pretty much unusable in my local area due to the very poor Apple Maps data. I hope the App developers will find some way around this. Yes, you can use Google Maps via Safari, but I want the functionality in Apps that I paid for in good faith to be returned. Come on Apple, do the decent thing and admit that Apple Maps is not up to the job for the vast majority of users. I await IOS 6.1 release that offers the choice of Apple or Google Maps. Fat chance I know but you can always live in hope.

You gave permission by downloading and installing iOS 6, plain and simple.

They should of been clear it was a DOWNGRADE. If they're going to update and upgrade people are going to expect bare-minimum the same features they were using two days ago. It has absolutely no transit data, no one ever told me about this... if they did I wouldn't of bothered with the iOS update at all!

This will makes me weary about future iOS updates for sure... assuming I still carry an Apple device in my pocket by the time iOS7 rolls around.

I agree Paul, but I don't think anyone imagined Apple would risk its reputation by releasing something of such poor quality or that removes fundamental features that people use every day!! We were mugged and should have been more careful. I think this has undermined Apple's reputation. It is clearly not customer focussed any more. I will be selling my shares too.

Why do Apple think they can steal my software? I am heavily dependent on Google maps and this replacement is useless. Worse than useless, downright misleading. I could go on - at great length. Just try it yourself. It is beyond a joke. The Google Maps app was my property. I bought it along with the phone. If Apple haven't heard about the low-cot Fast Track procedure in the English County Courts, they are about to find out. This is scary stuff - a big corporation arrogantly entering my phone and removing my property. Kafka, Orwell, Huxley all saw this coming.

iPhone, iCloud, iPad, iOS6, and now with maps apple has a new i. iAmateurhour. Glad I haven't updated my phone. If apple thinks replacing a polished professional map app with something so bad that it can't even be considered a beta is acceptable they got another thing coming. This new map app must have been designed by RIM. And what is worse is that apple says as more people use it, it will get better. Translation, they want us to fix their **** up. I'm not here to be apple's guinea pig, I need a map app that works. So until I hear otherwise, I am not updating my phone. And perhaps an iPhone 6 is not in my future.

What you purchased with your iPhone is a piece of hardware

and a "license" for the operating system and apps contained

on it. The operating system and apps are not "your property",

you are licensed to use it. This is true of any operating system

or software on any platform.

In turn, Google Maps was "licensed" to Apple as crippleware

compared to their own app with extreme limitations as to what

they were allowed to do with it.

BTW, all the features of the new Maps have been published

for a very long time. I simple glance through the info would

have told you that there was no Street View. So, you could have

simply chosen not to update.

Any way, both versions of Maps were lame, just the new one

is lamer.

First, Apple sure as **** IS monitoring this thread. Don't kid yourself. The fact that they've let it go on so long as basically a complaint/rant thread proves it

Second. Steve Jobs held a press conference to address the antennae problems in the iPhone 4. And they gave out free bumper cases to people who complained.

Expect Tim Cook within the next couple of weeks to do the same thing.

What may be hanging things up is that he's probably working with his software people on a maps upgrade so he's got something to offer.

Their roll out strategy was obviously flawed. It should have been released as a beta where you can switch back and firth between which map app is the default system app. Then encourage people to go out and test the Apple version and correct errors, etc.

Most people would've been fine with that and it would have alleviated the serious problems apple is facing.
