Q: Apple maps very disappointing

I think you said that a number of times and I agree.

Consider, if you saw someone trip and sprain their ankle  (which was clearly their fault and they knew they should be paying more attention)  Would you help them up or kick them as they lay on the ground?

Just something we can all think about.  This forum has become too negative in many respects.

Thank you for your beautiful reply. All of the comments about using Google maps thru Safari or downloading to IOS 5, are ridiculous. The download doesn't work and the Google Maps still does not have Street View. Some people are more visual than others. (I can't believe the people at APPLE don't get this.) When I first got my IPad, I didn't want to open the box for a couple of days. I thought it was so beautifully packaged and felt that Apple must have brilliant marketing people. I took pictures of the package. This is why Street View and You Tube are so important for millions of people. It is emotional. It is personal. If Apple doesn't turn this around before Google Maps puts out an app that will answer these shortcomings, Apple will take a hit it can never recover from.

Today they have incorpored street view to Google Maps app.

Yes they have, you have to search for an address and when it comes up you get a new icon in the bottom right to click on and then you get a full screen street view , even on an i pad.  So i no longer need streetview live app.

While Apple is apologizing, Google is working.

This is true and I have been asking all those with rediculous replies to let us know why technically Apple doesn't want us to go back to IOS 5. What ar ethey going to lose?

It is all about emotions. Apple liar Executive's ego and arrogance doesn't allow them apparently to do that. So it is our need against their ego.

Apple won't feel the impact of this "earned" loss of trust which they have created in the short term but they will difinitely pay the heavy price for that in the mid and long term. At the end functionality of most smartphones is very much the same and what makes one decides to buy from Apple or other manufacturer are the "personal and emotional" reasons.

In our region we don't get Apple new device releases immediately and in my family I am always the first to get them from the US or UK and provide them to friends and relatives at cost price. With iPhone 5 I refused to buy any and I kept telling everyone who asked me to get it for them that itsn't worth it and I am telling them that my next device is definitely going to be an Android. The only reason I am not switching to Android now is that I have an Application which took me about 4,000 manual downloads. It took me months to complete and I don't have the time to repeat that on an Android device now.

Since iPhone 2 I must have brought 40 or so iPhones and iPads. For sure I am not the one losing here.

Google's web based maps available now with street view feature.  Just tap on a location and then the little man icon bottom right of screenwhen viewing google maps in the web app in safari

iOS 6 is the worst product apple has released in a very long time. It is sad they have ruined my experience on the iphone by putting out a product that is not even close to being ready for public release.

1. Traffic is terrible, you have no idea if traffic is good or if they just do not have data for the road. Many times i have compared traffic on my wifes phone (not updated thank god!) with mine and apple shows clear road, when it was not clear at all and google shows red, there is no way to know if they have data or not.   MUST FIX!!!

2. Data is terrible! I did a search for resturant to find friends and I was not able to find on my phone. Huge shopping district returned 2 restaurants. Google maps on my wifes phone 17 restaurants and we found the locationw we needed to be at.  MUST FIX!!!

I used google maps for traffic everyday! now I can not. This has been the biggest kick in the crotch!  Give us google maps until you get this ready for public release. Or I will reluctantly go buy an android phone at the end of the month.

Good Bye Apple! After Steve died we all wondered what would happen with Apple. This is the answer. Steve would never have let iPhone 5 out the door until the maps were as good as or better than Google.

I have not downloaded the latest update to my iPhone 4 because I fear it contains ios 6 stuff. So I will carry on as long as I can with Google Maps on my MacBook Pro and my iPhone 4. When I need to upgrade for whatever reason, I will begin to move away from Apple products. I know when I've been screwed and I won't give Apple an opportunity to screw me twice.

It's amazing, in just two weeks time, google has massively improved the user experience of their mobile web app, and Apple has done nothing but tell its loyal customers to deal with it.  I'm gonna use the web app on my home screen until my contract runs out in January, then see how things have progressed.

If Siri is any sign as to how quickly Internet based search can improve in one years time, I'd say we're all screwed for a good long while.

Isn't it just odd that Apple can be the most successful company right now and still produced sub-par services.  Don't get me wrong, the hardware guys should be given a Nobel for their work, but the software guys should be sacked.

We have "da** you Autocorrect", websites dedicated to all the incorrect or frustrating Siri responses, now the Maps.app tumblr site.  Funny how they can get publicly mocked for such retched software and at the same time be praised for its hardware ingenuity.

And you know what the sad part is about maps?  It will never be as rich and all encompassing like Google.  Apple has already shown us what they think a maps app should be...a glorified Garmin GPS unit.  Man, do they ever NOT get it!  I'm pretty positive they done care enough to put the kind of effort google is doing with their maps.  Apple probably thinks its a waste of time to do Street View, and even now Google's got backpack mounted camera technology to do interior views of Airports and shopping malls.  They have a huge fleet of cars with google designed and developed technology.  They even have planes with custom HW and SW  equipped.  Im not even mentioning the 12 years plus of data Google has in their server farms to cross reference such data with 3rd parties.

Apple certainly has the finances to do it, but I could bet money they have no interest in it.  And that my friends is what it's going to take for  Apple to catch up.  They haven't a clue what it's going to take and how big if a disaster they caused to themselves for taking on Maps.

The remaining functionality that Google Maps can provide can be found by… going to Google Maps.

I understand the frustration, but now things are devolving into the equivalent of complaining that Pages doesn't support everything Microsoft Word does.

Which, unless you live in (certain parts of) the USA, doesn't even work properly, and in any case to nowhere near the depth of a dedicated "Garmin" type unit. No speed cameras, no voices, etc, etc, etc.

I agree... but the functionality most people want is simply "How do I get there?"  Which roads to take and which turns.

If you need speed camera/speed limit information, use a dedicated road GPS or one of the GPS apps.

I understand the frustration, but I think it's largely because functionality people got used to is gone; if Maps hadn't existed, people would find it a wonder.

That having been said, today even Street View came to the mobile Google web app, so the real remaining loss of functionality that can't be restored by going to maps.google.com instead is the fact that "locate" in App Store apps uses Apple's Maps.

Apple will get there (Google Maps was actually pretty bad for the first few years, with Mapquest being much more accurate), but Apple isn't going to send cars around to drive every street in the world like Google did; that's not their business model.

If you think a basic GPS is all anyone is needs, then you should work for Apple.  We live in an age where google maps is the Gold standard.  It's not good enough to be an app that just tells you how to get from A to B.  that's so 1995.   It's not about comparing, it's about what features should be demanded of a maps app in 2012.  Not to mention the fact that we had such a native service up until 2weeks ago and now it's been removed. 

I didn't say it's all "anyone" needs, I said it's all most people use Maps for.

For anything else, go to maps.google.com.

Why get upset about it when just adding a shortcut to maps.google.com and hitting that instead of the Maps app icon will now get you 99% of what you miss about the old Maps app?
