Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Soory to here that.  I would invite you over to my city but we no longer have a rail or bus station.

I think this was the worse mistake in Apple history. Here is what I am going to do. A: Turn off all automatic updating in iTunes so I can keep the current operating systems for my iPad and iPhone. I will not be updating to the new iPhone tomorrow as planned.

As for PR (which is part of what I do for a living), I think this story will become monumental in the days to come. It's already number three on the BBC news wire as of this morning. The least Apple could have done is give users a choice in mapping apps.

You can add a French user to the list of unhappy Maps user.

The map in my area is ten years old... I can see - sort of - my old car in my front yard! And look at those baby trees!

And it is, yes, BLACK AND WHITE!

Just plain awful. I sent Apple two messages over.

I agree with all the complaints about maps in iOS 6.  Horrrible, horrible, horrible product compared to what we had. Huge mistake by apple.

I will never forget when I upgraded my very first iPhone (3G) to iOS 4 and it killed it, since then I stopped being a blind Apple consumer, and every time they release a new version of iOS I wait a month until it seems the new software works fine in the version of the Apple devices I own.

I travel quiet often and always rent a car to drive to customer meetings all over the world, google maps on my iPhone 4 were the best companion I have, because of its accuracy and of course, the wonderfull Street View, but now without those, there is no valid reason for me to upgrade to iOS 6 until some relevant solution see the light, and of course I will not put a dime on buying the new iPhone 5.

I really don't want this is will be the beginning of the end of a marvelous product that the iPhone still is. I will not turn to other mobile phones because they simply don't have the same accuracy and user feedback that the iPhone touch-screen offers.

Hopefully, Apple prioritize the usefulness of the iPhone as a working tool over than an entertainment device. I preffer the old google maps than all the social networks integration that you Apple can get.

Is this apple quality? Well if this is a new standard for apple quality I am leaving the boat. These maps are crap.

The same is true for Switzerland. Some phone numbers and entries are >10 years old (wrong local codes). Poor or complete missing satellite imagery. Restaurants are misplaced or non existing. A ship station of lake Zurich is now 300 m inland next to my house.

All Tram stations in Zurich are gone. The post office is gone.

It lookes like someone has restored a 10 year old backup!

A complete desaster!

Apple maps is terrible. I wish I had not upgraded to iOS6. There is not enough new significant features in iOS6 to offset the dramatic backward step that Apple have forced on us with their own map app. How a product this poor got released is astonishing. The Google map app is a huge loss. Google executive must be laughing their heads off right now at Apple's expense.

I only realised today how much I  relied on the map app on my phone. It was so good I never though about what it would be like not to have it until today. I was all set to get the iPhone 5 but think I will hold off now and perhaps consider a new platform.

Given how bad the Apple map app is I can only assume Apple only wanted to break ties with Google so badly they did not care about putting a very poor quality replacement service out to their customers.

Big mistake by Apple. It's a shame us the customers are getting treated so badly.

I agree. This is disgraceful. It really angers me that thech companies allow their hatred of each other to get in teh way of their commitment to customers - even Apple. Google maps is superb and has had an enormous investment to get it there. Why can't we be offered the choice. This is such a backward step

I agree totally with you.  Google Maps and especially StreetView was a large part of my IPad use.

How I wish I had not done the downgrade.

If Apple want to fight their war with competitors, at least give us the opportunity to get off the Apple train and revert to IOS 5.  I would rather live with what I had in IOS 5 land than be cannon fodder for Apple.

It appears that Apple used the weakest data set partner -- Tom Tom.

Waze, along with TomTom and some other companies, provides traffic information for the new mapping service, although Bardin’s comments suggest that Apple is relying predominantly on TomTom.

“Apple went out and partnered with the weakest player,” he said. “They’re now coming out with the lowest, weakest data set and they’re competing against Google, which has the highest data set. What’s going to happen with the Apple maps, is that you’re literally not going to find things. When you do find them, they might be in the wrong place or position geographically. And if you do have it, the route to it may not be the optimal route.”

Bardin revealed that a large number of mobile app developers have reached out to Waze and wish to integrate the company’s maps directly into their apps instead of Apple’s service.

“They’re saying many things that used to work on Google don’t work on Apple,” he said. “Going forward now, we’re going to see this around maps, it’s the question of how fast Apple can work with their partners to update the data and how good the user experience will be.”

This will be a bigger disaster for Apple that antenaegate. At least in that case (excuse the pun) you could mitigate the problem by holding the iPhone 4 differently, or using it with a case.

There is NO WAY to mitigate the bad native mapping app for devices using ios6. And, I suspect, it will significantly delay adoption of the new ios on older devices.

Plus, now you have hundreds of thousands of businesses who spent a lot of time and effort marketing themselves via  google maps who now have to scramble because Apple's native app won't show them. This is a monumental disaster. And, frankly, I don't know what Apple can do to fix it in the short run.

I have now put the bookmarked Google Maps mobile site onto the first page of my homescreen and relegated the Apple Maps app to a folder of rarely used apps on my last page. It's not just the inaccuracies, whole towns missing, all motorwyas and main roads being yellow, no junctions on motorways, the dire quality of satellite images and hopeless search results - it's the lack of details on the maps themselves.

I am so glad that as my iPad is a version 1 I can't update to IOS6 and so wished I hadn't updated my iPhone.

I created a thread about the pitiful Apple Maps before seeing this... I am furious espeically since I have just upgraded my iPad and have an iPhone 5 being delivered tomorrow.

Nottingham - a major UK city is unrecognisable, just cloud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't even see my town on the Satellite view.

How can we all complain to Apple - doubt they even bother reading this.

Please please please Google bring out a Maps app so I never have to use this crap.

In dubai maps cannot take you to the building next door ! It is not like apple to release half baked products! Quite disappointed I must say.
