Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

I was thinking todayof writing similar sticker note on the back of my car stating "Please be patient... I am using iOS 6 on my iPhone".

This is a rant thread, no more, no less. It serves no useful purpose. If you have a legitimate question, start your own topic and ask it. If you just want to rant, stay right here.

I think you hit the nail on the head.  People came here for help

and various options and workarounds were given.  But when presented

with these, all they can respond with is "I want Google Maps back and

don't want anything else."  Okay, fine. If that is how they feel they should

be flooding the feedback channel and not a "help" forum where they

don't want to listen to any advise given anyway.

    No, no, no.

I want a mapping system at least equal to the one I had when I bought my iDevices. I couldn't care less whether it has Apple, Google or Heinz written on it.

And feedback via the links doesn't even elicit an acknowledgement.

Yes, strictly speaking this is a user-to-user tech support forum. But it is also the ONLY forum owned by Apple and therefore the nearest thing online we have to feedback to them that it is not OK to do what they did.

That waiting months or years for them to fix it (with our bloody input) is not OK.

Yes, some people are literally repeating their points. So what? Let them. This is not your's, or anybody else's forum to police.

Yes, some posts are bordering on the hysterical. See above.

If you consider this a rant-fest, why bother even reading it, let alone commenting? Just let people air their beef with Apple over this. If you don't like it, click on....

    Try this then: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/classicmap/id566173771?mt=8

Seems to be the closest option yet.

Sorry, but the app you have pointed is good for nothing. There's no route. No street view. It only gives the current location or the adress typed. I have already deleted it.

If it gives you address then it is good for something.

You mean it does not do what you want it to and it does not do everything the Maps app used to or currently does.

Thanks so much for posting this!  Unfortunately it seems to only be available in the UK store (I'm in Australia and it was not available).  Thanks again!

Thanks for providing this info JustJesper!  I have taken your advice and called Apple today.  I spoke with Agatha and her senior support advisor Atish.  Both were great people and very understanding and helpful.  Atish sent me his email address and I was able to send the below message which will be forwarded to the technical engineering department.  I'm not sure if that is the correct place, but it is a start!

Atish confirmed that this discussion forum is not the best place to voice your concerns (the best, he said, was through the 'report a problem' feature within the app itself), HOWEVER - this forum represents the only highly visible (and semi-official) place to follow the status of this problem.  So I would ask anyone who is experiencing problems with Apple Maps please call up Apple Care - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 the number in Australia was, 1300 321 456.  Once you've made your call, (if you have time) please report it back here, and perhaps this way we can create the official (2-way) communication channel we need.

Finally, to the higher level users on this forum, please be patient with us.  If we had the proper communication channels in place (2-way), we would not be here.  All we want is to be kept informed by official sources.  I'm sorry if we are unnecessarily taking up your time, but unfortunately I can't ignore this problem.

For your reference, here is what I sent to Atish through email:

My name is Derek Fernandez, I am an Iphone5 and Ipad3 user from Sydney, Australia.

I have been experiencing major problems with Apple Maps in ios6:

Firstly there is the problem of incorrect pin placement - to date the majority of my searches have returned pin locations that were incorrect.  Secondly there is the problem of poor search results - often my searches do not even find actual pin locations at all.  I have lost hours and been late for important meetings due to this.

The inaccurate pins have been reported through the maps feedback where possible, however, in many cases the pin was so far from it's actual location that ACCURATE pin replacement was not possible. (without cross-referencing to Google maps, I could not be sure I was replacing the pin exactly, so I did not want to submit erroneous data.)

The interim solution of Google Maps through Safari would often not load, and when it did was a cumbersome experience (it did not cache my results, so switching from safari would mean I had to search again)

I've submitted feedback through the Apple website, (I have even tweeted Tim Cook, and sent him an email (although I'm sure these are not the most effective means) and posted to the Apple discussion forums.  And yet I have not received any additional status updates as to how this matter is progressing.

What I would like is more accountability from Apple on this problem - Tim Cook apologised and stated "we are doing everything we can to make Maps better" - but what are these actions exactly, and what is the expected time frame for these fixes?  Even accountability for the problem pins would be helpful - knowing that they are assigned, and worked on to a time frame.

Apple is now providing a service (not just a product) and appropriate channels of communication need to be implemented.  The Apple discussion forums currently do not meet this requirement (and are heavily censored, with no official response from employees from Apple).  What we need is increased transparency, and some form of official update on this issue.

As an example, Google have established a blog, discussion forum and two-way channels for reporting problems and fixing errors - users are informed - and the frustration felt by me and many others on the Apple discussion forums could be eased by implementing some or all of these channels. If you feel you are the incorrect person to address this issue, I would really appreciate if you pass this on to someone who may be able to create this change, or confirm that these channels are being worked on.

Ideally in my case, I would like to see the return of the Google Maps app for ios5 to ios6 (I use an iphone5 so downgrading is not an option for me).  I am more than happy to help improve Apple maps in this interim period, however.

Thanks so much for your time!

    Derek.

    Derek,

    I agree with you.

I'd love to see an Apple Maps blog or website to keep users informed.

    It's a great idea.

That's cool you made some headway, awesome.  I agree too, it would be nice to see somewhere that they could/would let us know what the progress is on not just Apple Maps but the entire iOS6 bug/error issues.
