Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

Give that a shot and try to keep charging me 200$ a month.

Apple is not charging you anything per month.

You realize that it's not in Flyover mode, right?

I miss my old Google maps app too   The Apple maps app is missing so many small, yet necessary, roads!  Please, Apple, while you're still working out the considerable amount of bugs in your maps, give us back the Google app.  We're still using your hardware.......  It's a sad thing when my 7 year old Garmin does a better job than the sparkling-new ios 6.

Why Apple doesn't let us downgrade to IOS 5, since there are many phones still running IOS 5.

Are they afraid of what ?

Flyover or not flyover, or any other name you call it. Don't you agree that is a ridiculous image?

They won't agree. To be fair though, it's hard when you have your fingers in your ears and your head in the sand. If you deny something enough times I guess in the end you believe it..

Why not post a comparison screenshot from Google Maps or Google Earth to show how much better the Google images are...? Maybe because Google doesn't have 3D coverage of Paris either?

Yeah, Google only has Streetview. How lame is that?

Apple isnt charging me? That's your argument!? No apple isn't charging me 200$ a month but AT&T ( their business partner )is. great argument though! Now I feel so much better about being lost. Entering my hotel (a major hotel) and getting "no search results found" is one thing but entering the physical address down and getting "no search results found" is complete b.s.

And you still have Streetview under iOS 6. So your point is...?

You need to re-read your post.

"Why not post a comparison screenshot from Google Maps or Google Earth to show how much better the Google images are...? Maybe because Google doesn't have 3D coverage of Paris either?"

How much better the Google images are? They are WAY much better, because they have Streetview. Flyover (where available, is pretty but useless eye candy, which no one in the real world will ever use for getting around a city. Streetview, on the other hand = invaluable.

You asked for an Apple / Google comparison. You got it.

I asked for a comparison of the equivalent feature, not a completely different one.

Pedant. Streetview far outstrips Apple's 3D / Flyover abortion in every way, including usability. And you know it.

Yes, I do know it. Not a fair comparison though - comparing the 3D features of the two is a fairer comparison.

One man's pedantry is another man's accuracy...a better informed man's accuracy...

Tee hee and Meg likes it too - what a bonus for you

So, let's get you better informed. Google don't have 3D images, Apple do. So we can't compare like-for-like... what can we do...?

Let's compare Apple's magic new 3D images with Google's crappy old 2D. And let's be extra generous to Apple - let's take a peek at one of their own stores, in a CITY on the south coast of the UK

    First, here's Google's awful attempt:

Now, let's wonder at Apple's 3D offering to help me find my way to give them some more cash:

Sorry, I couldn't zoom in any more than that. That dark bit along the bottom is the sea, in case you were wondering. You can make out some tower blocks and some roads running north if you squint.
