Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

If that's true, then it's a very definite case of 'be careful what you wish for'..

You've obviously been on these forums a very long time - were there lots of threads with people complaining about lack of turn by turn? I just did a very quick search without success.

With regard to Maps, I trust the same people now saying 'dry your eyes, you've still got Streetview (etc etc) via 3rd party means' were slating people then, saying 'dry your eyes, you've got turn-by-turn via 3rd party means'?

William, I don't understand why people so often reference turn by turn when there are by now many apps that do it better than probably Apple ever will?

Probably because people have been complaining about the fact that Apple hasn't provided it? Those people probably submitted lots of feedback requesting what was seen as "required" feature of a smart phone.

Ah yes... So that would be the reason.

Let that be a lesson to all you people requesting enhancements via the apple feedback.

You need to explicitly state that your requirement retains existing functionality.

    In this case:

dear apple - please can I have turn by turn voice on my £500+ phone as I don't want to use my £75 in car dedicated sat nav. In implementing this request (and this is what you scoundrels omitted) please could we retain the accuracy and coverage that we have come to enjoy and most importantly the integration with public transport so that those of us that are not in cars might be able to navigate using public transport.

You might have noticed that my requirement made no mention of YouTube remaining - but I can live without that...

I guess we could talk about why we do buy apple products.

Apple is not listening to any of us. some high level people inhere is even proud of telling us.

So why do we buy Apple.

A friend of mine described it very well.

    • Apple starts a hype regarding a new product
    • Apple leaks info
    • apple leaks pictures or even leaves products around for us to see
    • Then the product comes out. Saying "the best.. , new invention..." and so on
    • People stand in lines to get it
    • Consumers start using the product
    • Consumers gets disappointed
    • consumers complain
    • Consumers get used to the product not working to expectations
    • Apple starts a hype regarding a new product
    • Apple leaks info
    • apple leaks pictures

The Circle is complete. The high level people knows exactly what they are doing here.

They get you ready for the next hype. Cause apple is working on it and you are "stupid" for asking questions.

I have updated my OS to 10.7, but only cause it came with the computer. I was more then happy with the older version. 10.8, gives me facebook stuff and other crap. If Apple wants it to look like windows, (hey windows, perhaps you actually have a case here ) I could go get windows.

I like the design, and I think most of us is that way. It is a beautiful product, but should the products inside not be as amazing. the ios 6 is a failure. Big time, and we should not just let this fly.

Apple has downgraded out products in such a bad way that it is outrageous.

I'm getting tired of most high level people in here cause they in most cases are rude and not able to understand that for most users are unhappy with the update.

I talk to many that just shake there head, but don't actually participate in any kind of discussion regarding the ios6.

Apple is charging people for products that running systems that is getting dumber and dumber.

Every time I update now, I my applications get worse and worse.

Some one wrote about the OS designers head to role, and I seriously think they are right or you will see tic tac toe as the main feature soon.

You should  complain about this map and It is not ok that Apple is not telling us what is going on.

And those of you high level people in here that just keep saying it fine, go buy a app. please do so with out being rude to people. As I can not tell you not to post here. It's your right also.

Why should I complain about something with which I don't have a problem? How would that be helpful? It would be a waste of my time and would add no useful information.

Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool who resorts to personal insults when he doesn't get his way in an online forum?

The fact is that Apple Maps uses a fraction of the data that Google maps does. Turn by turn directions is obviously better for someone who is driving. The vector maps are much faster and more responsive. If that isn't enough, the labels on Apple Maps are adjustable. I have always found the labels on Google maps difficult to read, even on the desktop. On a small screen, vector labels and spoken, turn-by-turn directions are a major advance for iOS users.

Etresoft, that article is interesting, if a little sycophantic.

Adjustable labels? For me at least, not a problem, but I certainly don't dismiss your need.

Turn-by-turn, lovely to have, too. Apple's v1.0 nav system has of course some considerable way to go to compete with a dedicated app - my TomTom, for example. Again, for me, I feel it's something Apple wanted me to have, rather than I wanted it myself - like they've created a solution for a problem that didn't exist.

Vector graphics obviously brings much lower data usage with a faster experience. Good news indeed for those not on unlimited data plans, which luckily are still abundant here in the UK. But the huge goof-up here is not the efficient delivery of Apple's data, it's the woeful quality of it.

They've taken a mature, integrated app, complete with the undisputedly brilliant Streetview, and replaced it with a new integrated app which outside of the US is really, really, dreadful. But has turn-by-turn and can download its awful data really quickly. That's just not good enough, is it?

    @etresoft

Your totally missing the point. Apple maps is not a good map, yes it might have 3d and vector and turn by turn, But when it hasn't the data so you can get places, what's the point.

What excatly is it all you high level people here want us to do ?

You are not at all helpfull and Apple is doing nothing. Well, your right they said about a month ago, that they were working hard to get it resolved. But why not come out telling us what's going on. The sheer amount of pages on this topic should get alarm ringing at Apple. and some info to us frustrated users should get public.

I can only point out that I never write about something I don't care about, yet it looks like some high level people here is just doing that here, Why ? Please make me understand, how that is helping ?

I personally think it will die out when Apple realizes that what they did was not good enough, and start actually communicating with there consumers.

When they get a working map, deal with the Batterie life, the wifi problems and so on.

If that does not happen soon, we are many that will move on.

    Its extremely dysfunctional.

Why was Apple Inc. not able to successfully test this app with the new [incapable] provider before releasing it?

Such technical mistakes would have been expected 5+ years ago, but now in 2012? Considering all the technological and scientific advancements that industry-leading corporations such as Apple Inc. have achieved and take pride in.

    • 8 out of 10 times: the Maps locates an incorrect address, for common and simple locations. Moreover, most of the times, if it does recognize the correct address it is not the precise location. Some very common restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn actually either show up in another state instead, or are not searchable at all.
    • Its definitely no help to use it for identifying NYC's subway stations and lines. Unlike Google maps that is extremely helpful and has been constantly evolving.
    • Driving directions are completely off. We got lost for an 'extra 1hr40min' because Maps kept giving incorrect directions and routes, for a simple straight-shot route to get from NYC to Hudson.
    • The Maps is constantly freezing and getting confused with other names/addresses similar to what was searched.
    • Even the Yelp feature, which is a great idea, is not functioning properly.
    • The interface itself is also not very user friendly and welcoming.

I wonder how soon is Apple going to resolve this mistake?

I understand how contracts and collaboration terms change between different corporations, but this is unfortunate and extremely frustrating. Not only is it an immense inconvenience, most importantly, it is costing me time and money. I am surprised how Apple Inc. with all its resources could screw up such a vital part of their devices. One would think that out of all places the new Maps would function in larger cities at least (NYC, LA, etc.) but it is clearly not.

In my experience (London, UK), my iOS 6 iPhone uses MORE data for navigation, not less. Apple Maps may use less data than Google Maps, but when I find myself reverting to Google Maps on a regular basis I'm using more data, not less. But I don't really care how much data the maps use. I want to find my way around quickly and easily and I still find it considerably easier to do that with Google Maps than Apple Maps.

Do you really think repeating the same internet lies over and over again somehow makes them more true? Anyone can walk into an Apple Store and try it for themselves.

Certainly Apple Maps can be improved, but then that is true of just about anything. This weekend I used Apple Maps to navigate to a remote, off-the-grid house in the middle-of-nowhere Ontario. When the iPhone announced we had arrived at our destination, we could see that we were still at least a kilometer away. But had we used Google Maps, we would have been on the wrong side of a rather large lake.
