Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

I wish Apple and Google would just play nice.

    Apple maps suck.

    Google maps on Safari suck.

    Kiss and Make Up.

    And fix it!

    That's your opinion.

For on-the-road use in the areas I've traveled, I've found Apple Maps to be far superior to Google Maps, at least the old iOS 5 Maps app version.

Mine is apple maps is an embarrassingly disastrous piece of software that will go down in history as the reason "it just works" can never be used or trusted.

The whole iOS 6 debacle has reversed the roles in the iconic 1984 advert where apple depicted Microsoft as big brother.

Enjoy travelling down the road to Walmart with your iMap while the rest of us struggle to enjoy the world and what it has to offer -until google comes up with the goods.

The only thing relevant to this about 1984 is that no one needed iPhones or any electronic guidance to get where they were going then, despite no less traveling or greater chance of getting lost.  The amount of wailing, teeth gnashing, hyper-entitled outrage spewed here is way beyond beyond pathetic.

If you even need any device to get you around your daily life, such as you say, defines you as "challenged" in various ways.  Is that the case or, hopefully for your sake, someone pays you well to post crap like that?

Yes, GPS-NAV devices can be handy when in an unfamiliar area, though can also get you more lost than using human generated directions. In fact, If you use the non-voice guided, mini-screen, Google iPhone maps in a car, you're creating unnecessary hazard to the rest of us on the road.

Keep up the pretence central Florida - if iMaps were as good as apple claimed you would be pounding your chest and telling everyone about it. Your nonsense about using maps just shows how pathetically small minded you are. Just because you think the is no world outside of your precious USA doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Daily life is an adventure for me and many like me. It's a job for others that takes them to new locations. Just because the aisle you are responsible for stacking doesn't move doesn't mean you can tar us all with the same brush. As for reverting back to the ridiculous argument that people didn't need iPhones to navigate back then - seriously?! - you don't deserve or need  to own an iDevice as you are obviously so superior to the rest of us in this world....

Nonsense.   You miss the point entirely.

Just because you think the is no world outside of your precious USA doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Didn't say a single word about Maps accuracy anywhere, or any mention of geography.  Stop parroting other trolls (or maybe your prior user IDs).

Yet they didn't...  The FACT is that Maping and navigation are very secondary functions of iPhones.  If that is your true need, you should have purchased a dedicated GPS-NAV device which does job far, far better, regardless of map data.

that's better play nicely - nicely edited after after post removal.... name calling is so un called for ;)

Cling all you like to your hope that I am a different user - if that is all you have to throw back then you have as good as admitted how ridiculous your argument is.

I agree mapping and navigation may very well be a secondary use of a smart phone - for some however it is primary. It  worked perfectly well before iOS 6 with google maps and the point is apple saw fit to prematurely remove this functionality in an underhand fashion claiming iMaps / apple maps was superior - a trust that will take some time to restore.

You accuse me of parroting other trolls and yet in a forum for iDevices you bleat on as has done before about how people got on without such navigation aids back in yonder year and tell me I should have bought a dedicated GPS Nav device. Well central Florida - I did buy a device that worked perfectly well when bought it - it's why I bought it. Who are you to tell me I need to buy a dedicated device?! I was more than apply with my 4s and my iPad 2 under iOS 5.1.1

I have news for you - the smart in smart phone - it's why a phone is not just a phone.

Even Apple stated that Apple Maps are messed up (they apoligized), therefore no matter what anyone says, Apple maps are messed up!

To dispute this fact is to defy Apple's declaration, which is heresy in Apple World, so all of you that are disputing Apple's statement on this subject, stop it NOW!

(Anyone know how to get to Walmart?)

Absolutely not.  The maps were poorly displayed for driver usability - particularly exits and ramps.  The iDevices have poor GPS reception on the road. The maps, accurrate or not, are dependent on internet connection - forget about the boonies!  AND NO VOICE GUIDANCE.  Anyone using a stock Google Maps for car navigation (iPhone or iPad) IS A HAZARD TO EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD.

You can't using iOS Safari.  Get "Atomic Web" browser and set it to emulate OS X Safari.  (Note that it has an annoying bug that capitalizes the first 2 letters at the beginning of a sentence.)

Thanks central Florida - I used to use atomic - but that too has stopped showing the magic icons... I will do a rebook - reinstall etc ;)

By the way - do you see the irony in telling me to get a dedicated device for GPS and in your next post telling us how much better iMaps is to google as an in car sat nav :p

The phone belongs in your pocket - mobile phone (that's what we across the pond call it) - dedicated devices don't fit well into my pockets... Your car however - get a sat nav - it's a darn (to use Americanism) sight cheaper than an iPhone :D

Since I never said that, there is no irony.  I was refuting  your claim that the iOS device with iOS 5 Google Maps was "perfect."  In fact, it falls from perfection in many ways.  I NEVER mentioned or compared it to iOS 6 iMaps. Some of the deficiencies (screen size, internet connection requirement, poor GPS reception) are device dependent.  Really time for you to sign up for remedial reading (or ethics and stop deliberately distorting what I say.)

Hmm, you just affirmed my very point, which in the previous paragraph you dismiss.  So, explain how your iOS 5 iPhone was the "perfect" navigation device while it occupies your pocket and has no voice guidance.   Are you saying your primary mode of transportation is walking (even bicycle use is dangerous)??? If so, stop wasting everyone's time.

FYI, there are pocket sized dedicated "sat-nav" devices designed for hikers/walkers.  With all your hang-ups and sensitivities about USA and Americanisms, maybe it's time for you to switch to strictly UK designed and produced technologies.

Walking and public transport. I'm in a different city every month. A smart phone is a perfect accompaniment to such an adventure and I am not the only person to think this unless your conspiracy theory extends to my alter ID's being everyone in this thread, other threads , other forums, news channels, blogs etc etc .... The fact remains that the in pocket smart phone is there to (or was there to) help you if or when lost.

Go out and explore a new city in which you are unfamiliar - armed with your hotel address, a public transport travel card and an iPhone under iOS 5.1.1 with google maps and you could do anything you want to and know that you could get home one way or another. You haven't experience the wonders of a new city until you simply catch the next bus or train that happens to come along and only get off when you see something interesting.. Then catch the next in a totally different direction. Knowing all the time that google maps is recalculating your destination from your current location.

If you are a skier and a technology fan then you too may be following the developments surrounding HUD ski goggles - I can't wait to be able to go where the mountain looks best and have my onboard computer re-navigate to my destination without the need to unruffled paper maps on a wet and windy chair lift - perhaps one day apple may release an app to do the same. When it does I look forward the grumpy old men whining about back in their day when they used to balance a leaf and a pin on a pool of melted snow...

I never said google maps was perfect - but it was much closer to perfection that apple maps - and it was taken away from us under a veil of lies and a subsequent apology .

As for time wasting - seriously... the apple lemmings that will defend apple to the end regardless of how ridiculous they sound that keep posting here are the ones wasting their time. Those of us with valid arguments and valid reasons for wanting google maps back (or wanting apple maps fixed!) post here in a desire to see action. So you are the only one wasting YOUR time and it would appear to me that you enjoy doing so. Me - I'm roaming through Europe on a train as we speak with my Samsung galaxy and google maps, iPad and iPhone - get your community support friends to check my ip....  I wonder if they would love to see you stop bringing this thread up to the top again so they can delete it like the other threads and the ios6 downgrade rant - now there's a conspiracy theory ;)
