Q: Apple maps very disappointing

And Google has "report a problem" links just like Apple Maps.
About this time last year, Google renamed every street in region of 7 million people in Spain. People were still reporting this issue as broken six months later.
The difference is that Google is beloved by the media technocrati and always gets a pass on these issues. Apple - not so much.

What did Apple initially call their half baked product? I believe until the text changed on the Apple website, the language was an astonishing boast of perfection from a company whose products "just work" and which had made a fraction of the investments Google had made on Maps.

Google's Mobile Navigation service is labelled a beta service, but I don't see anything where Google calls its map service beta.

Of course. We aren't talking about Google here. The problem is always Apple, isn't it? We can't even mention problems with Google's products without finding a way to slander Apple with misinformation. Apple's brand new service is "half-baked" but Google's 7 year-old service is "beta". 4 people use Apple Maps and get stuck in the mud in Australia and it makes international headlines. Google arbitrarily changes the language for a region of 7 million people and those are just growing pains not worthy of discussion.

Apparently you didnt really read the article, especially the last paragraph. This thread is all about the maps. Location services are quite different and dont really rely on the maps data itself, but rather geolocation services within other apps. The last paragraph says it succinctly...its not really about the maps...
Its all good though...what an age we live in!

And that is where Google scores. Because they have the best and most extensive and fastest growing databases linked to geolocation.
The Google ecosystem of apps that use geolocation include the Google Apps (Maps, Local, Places, Drive, Calendar, Tasks, Picasa and more) and third party apps (like the location based todo app that I use).
The problem today is that all these apps do not yet form a true ecosystem. They do not use the Google APIs yet. Google's own iOS apps like Google Local, open up the clunky Google Maps on Safari, instead of the easy to use and smooth Google Maps native iOS App.
However, that will change quickly. All of them will quickly start using the Google APIs. How else will they survive? The best location apps will use the APIs with the best data. And that is Google today.
As for iOS vs. Android, it is the same old Mac vs. Windows story. We all know how that turned out. The best hardware will not win. Nor will the best OS. The ecosystem of applications that consumers start using, will determine which one wins. Google apps clearly show the way today. Tomorrow... Who knows?

Also note he is still using Apple maps even though he hates it, has been compaingin about it and wanted Google to release an app (which they did 3 weeks ago).
