Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

Valmetshooter. Sorry to hear you have an error.

Are you using Windows? If so, have you had iTunes 10.7 installed? If yes it has updated your system host file. I found a YouTube video explaining how to revert this. Do a search.

Also, when restoring the iPhonen software, you need to be connected to the internet to allow Apple to valiadate your "update."

Luckily for me, i'm using a Mac and uninstalling iTunes 10.7 and all files associated with it was very easy. Hope it works for you.

Terrible, just terrible. I am cancelling my iPhone 5 preorder and selling my iPhone 4S, now that it has been ruined by iOS 6.

DUDE!!!!  The maps doesn't know where ANYTHING IS!!  ***!!  I just got back from China and had I updated it before I would have been lost the entire time. I'm in a hotel right now and has no clue!!!  There's a hotel down the street - the most famous one in this town known WORLDWIDE and again it has NO CLUE. I'm infuriated.

It has taken 10+ years for a man like Jobs to take it from $2 to $700.

Wouldn't take 10 months to bring it back down if this is the future of Apple.

One of my big concerns here is that I don’t think fixing Apple maps is going to be something that will happen quickly. The quality and resolution of the satellite imagery is abysmal for large parts, how is this going to get fixed? Presumably the company providing this data to Apple has handed over their highest quality, most up-to-date satellite imagery so where are the updates going to come from?

The other thing that bothers me is what’s happened to the quality control at Apple? One of two things must of happened.

    1. Someone at Apple QA took a look at the quality of the maps and thought they were satisfactory.
    2. QA wasn’t carried out to a high enough level and the product released without it being checked properly.

I’m not sure which of this I’d be more bothered about.

It looks like the best thing for the moment is for us to use the Google Maps app when it’s released, then in a year or two hopefully Apple Maps will have matured enough to be useful. One day I’d like to drop Google Maps and use the Apple one, but that day it just seems so far away at this point.

What was the reason that Apple has decided to change Google Maps with Apple Maps? They could have let the users to decide which app to use.

Do Apple Maps are considered as upgrade?? I don't think so....

They have promoted so much the new maps.... that nobody was expecting that they could have so many problems.

Google Maps was the most used application and Apple should have taken seriously any "upgrade".
These mistakes are not allowed by a company as Apple.

    I am really dissapointed.

Hope Apple can fix it...the whole maps fiasco is quickly becoming a laughing stock.

It's like twilight zone here in Japan too. Apple Maps leaves out the block numbers! That's like leaving out the street names in the U.S.

For my neighborhood here in Tokyo (not exactly the hinterlands) all I see are big empty outlines.

With the previous App that used Google services I saw everything - block numbers, building names, stores, etc. I could follow the blue dot while walking and actually find places.

For whose benefit did Apple make the change? Not for the users of their products, that's for sure.

I too think of same, mate. For the first time since the first iPhone, I am planning to switch to Android. I regret having waited this long for the sixth generation. Nevertheless I will wait untill November for the official launch of iPhone 5 in the UAE only to make sure whether Google release an app of their own for the iOS platform. If not my iPhone 4 will make way for Samsung S3.

In the meantime I hope that Apple will approve Google map app.

In all fairness, yes maps are a massive feature loss but I wouldn't jump ship to Android on that basis alone, I've actually found the rest of iOS 6 to have some very useful features... and have also seen friends struggling to get Android phones to do even the basic tasks (3 months in and I still can't get my girlfriend's HTC to sync with Google Contacts!!!)

The only other downside to me with the maps issue is that when iOS 5 was launched the Bluetooth got broken, I was hoping it would be fixed by 6 but it wasn't but now I've got no chance of getting any visibility for that because of the maps issue!

When it comes down to it though I really do think Apple needs to do something. We may have all criticised Google for the manner in which they collected additional data when setting up Streetview but you don't realise how useful a tool it is until it's gone.

Relative to google maps, this is a terrible product.

I live in the middle of Melbourne and tonight, it took me down a dead end street in a journey from East St Kilda to St Kilda.

Having used google maps for 2 years, in both Australia and Indonesia, id never ever encountered such a situation.

In addition, in looking up addresses, the apple product is incabaple of finding addresses that exit. Have to go to google maps online version to find them.

This is a complete throwback. The iphone WAS a brilliant product that integrated and worked perfectly for me previous to this update for the last 2 years. Now it is a complete pain in the *** and annoying.

Require google maps. If this is not fixed by the time my contract ends, will certainly be trying an Android phone next time round as google maps is my number 1 most frequently used application.

Do not upgrad to Ios6 if you use google maps.

The apple maps is by far the worst apple product ever released.

    Cant find addresses.

Will not map out journeys properly nor efficiently.

    Stick with os5

    Hi Sikes.

it sounds like you know how to do this. Can you perhaps email me so I can get this to work.

    justjesper@hotmail.com

I keep getting a error when trying to restore to 5.1.1. when it is being validated by Apple.

The maps do not include entire cities... I know it exists, since I've been there... Google sees it. Apple does now.

(I understand maps is new but being a little more ready for world release is . . . . well . . you get the idea,)

Search for the city Punta del Este in Uruguay

(Most of the cities in the entire country are wrong, they are all named Sección and a number.)

    Google:

Three Years ago I bought my first Iphone JUST because of the maps.

It was more than an application... It was essencial for my job!

I also bought an Ipad to see the maps in larger screen... Now Apple just calls off Google Maps and deliver this creepy terrible maps service! Did apple guys lost their minds?

How do they deliver a beta (delta in my oppinion) product after becaming famous for the trust people have in their well done applications and products? I hope they fix it soon because Ill certainly be forced to change plataform because of this.

About the other 199 improovements, I'm looking for something reaaaaaaaly great, but until now just small ********.

    Incredibly disappointing!
