Sep 25, 2012 12:03 PM in response to chazzarelliby gkinchina,Just touch and hold at any point on the map. It drops a pin.

Sep 25, 2012 12:05 PM in response to chazzarelliby chazzarelli,Never mind.. i just found how to get the pin, didn't see the curled up page at the bottom

Sep 25, 2012 12:21 PM in response to chazzarelliby chazzarelli, also, you are correct, dropping a pin is still useless. I'm overseas in Dubai and in Doha and it wont work directions from the airport to the Dubai Mall. I hope it is not as bad for places in the US, because over here, it doesn't work one bit.

You must have a different version of Maps to me. "Weymouth" takes me straight to Weymouth. Are you sure of your spelling?
Here's my screenshot: my search was "Weymouth, England".
If I go to the southwestern region of the UK in Maps and search for "Weymouth, England" then I do find Weymouth on Sea (as it were). But I thought the idea of Maps was to find places when you didn't know where they were. Notice that Crewe is now called WrexhamCrewe (Wrexham is in Wales, at least 30 miles west).
By the way, when searching for Tiverton as above (= when looking at the southwestern region of the UK), it showed me Blackpool and Luton as significant towns comparable to Exeter, Taunton, Yeovil and (yes) Weymouth - but both in Devon. (For non-UK readers, Blackpool is in Lancashire in the northwest of England, and Luton is north of London. It has an airport.). My guess is that Blackpool and Luton are actually merely villages in Devon that Maps for some reason thinks are the well-known Blackpool and Luton.

Which is what they are. Maps doesn't have any conception of which Plackpool is better known, it's just the name of a place. If you search for Blackpool in the index of an atlas, you will find two (or more) "Blackpools" listed. And neither of them will be listed as "Blackpool (the well-known one)". "Blackpool UK" isn't exact enough to necessarily hit the right one.
I got the same results as you. My guess is that the app presents you with the match closest to the current place you are looking at, unless you you are more definitive with, perhaps, the county.
I just went back to the search and clicked on "Blackpool tower" There's only one of those. I think.

Sep 25, 2012 3:11 PM in response to tonefoxby John Potts,I agree with you - there are indeed several Blackpools and Lutons, and an atlas would rightly list them.
But Maps gives them the same prominence as Exeter, Taunton, Yeovil and Weymouth. The Luton in Devon is truly minute, but Maps appears to indicate that it's comparable in size/importance to Exeter. Where is getting that idea from?
I came to the same conclusion as you - Maps seems to make matches depending on where you are currently searching, geographically speaking.
Thank goodness for Blackpool Tower...

Sep 25, 2012 3:18 PM in response to Shilts9by sunbum22,I have to agree. I am in the US and downloaded iOS 6 a few days ago and can find nothing in need in my own home town. We have three United States Post Offices here and none of them even show up. The Apple Map App tells me the closest Post Office is 25 miles away in another city.
Boo Apple.

Sep 25, 2012 3:43 PM in response to sunbum22by Lear Pilot,I just put a search for "post office". It found a Pak Mail but not one of the four post offices withing 20 miles of here. I'm in coconut creek, Fl.
Useless app for a basic, basic function.
And there's no Pak Mail where it said there is one.
Colossal waste of time.

Sep 25, 2012 4:16 PM in response to Shilts9by thujones,I asked Siri to take me to the closest "Apple Store", and it found a sign company called "Apple Rock"
Say it ain't so!
I asked a second question "Where can I get my iPhone fixed?"
Siri responds with map results to the effect of "I found fifteen Apple Stores close to you:"
Same results as first question. Maps, y u no know who made you?

Sep 25, 2012 4:17 PM in response to Shilts9by RoddyB1,This is a "deal breaker" for me! I had almost been fooled into getting the iPad and Note book as well as the iPhone 5. I use Google maps, especially "Street view" for my work. I have had a lucky escape! If Google get a map app that restores what's been lost, approved, then I will re consider, but right now I'm thinking its time for a change! I can't be the only person in the world thinking I've been let down, can I? I'm sure I'm not the only one who is going to vote with my feet and move to "Android" Lets be honest, and maybe Apple should be more honest with us, but Apple maps are where Google maps were years ago! And all the rubbish about, it's cloud based and will get better, isn't going to get Street View back, and if Apple tried to put it on their maps, I'm sure Google would sue for breach of copywrite!
-
Sep 25, 2012 4:20 PM in response to RoddyB1by thujones,Same sentiment here. I was worried I wasted money on the dedicated TomTom app, but I am still glad I have it! Of course no street view, but hey at least I have a local copy of maps!
If Apple did want to pilot a streetview clone, I would be more than happy to drive one of their data-collection cars though!
