Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

well, Tim Cook issued an apology today, http://www.apple.com/letter-from-tim-cook-on-maps/

    Maps, Schmaps..

Too little: the only sensible approach is to offer a downgrade option to 5.1, maps are not the only problem with iOS6

Too late: I ordered a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 two days ago, it will ship on Monday, the iPhone will go on Ebay next week.

Since the launch of MacOS Vista Lion there has been a distinct lack of innovation combined with a complete disregard of customers, my PC Hardware has moved out of Cupertino already, my phone now follows.

.... A man using Apple Maps walks into a bar… or maybe it’s a church. Or a hospital, or an empty lot.

    And then there's this:

I have been a loyal iPhone user since the original model. I've always raved about this as the best smartphone, and have converted many a friend and colleague to iPhone-land. However, despite whatever politics is in play between Apple and Google, I believe that removing the Google Maps app with iOS 6 severely handicaps the iPhone.

I live in New York City and what I miss most is:

    - having transit directions directly available within the maps app

    - having accurate maps, where I can rely on the location of the pin

I realize that Apple is investing additional resources into building iMaps but that could take months if not years. Iin the meantime, can we plaese add the Google Maps app back to iOS?

Yes tiara. I just saw that. It just goes beyond belief.  To take something away which had been included with the os and then say buy one of these alternatives. How much does apple make from every user who purchases Navigon and its many in app purchases?

It's funny how things turn out. All these years of fighting between iOS and android, apple and google...

Imagine if the smartphone war was won by google all because of google map.

Ha! It's not ONE thing but a cumulation of MANY things that will send many but all those obsessed and infatuated with Apple and the iPhone to the rivals. Apple needs to change their corporate mindset pretty darn quick and reshape and remodel Apple from inside or the iPhone (not Apple) will end up like Blackberry within 5 years.

I agree. I also find it very funny (sad funny) that Cook is giving us all permission to use another app instead of Apple maps. It goes to show you how that he must be fed a lot of rubbish where they believe Apple customers can't make their own decisions or think for themselves.  They look for the almighty [Apple] on what they should and should'nt be doing with their iPhone. Hence, Apple's motto is "we decide what YOU need".

This was one of the biggest apps Apple was pushing before the launch, now we are stuck downloading and maybe paying for 3rd party navigation apps till Apple gets it maps together. #waiting for iOS 6.1

If the Beatles were still composing, they probably would be singing,

"back to the iOS, back to the iOS, back to the iOSS 5"

I also made the great mistake of downloading the IOS 6..., RUBBISH would be the right word to define the new Apple Maps.

We have lost the great quality of images and informatio of Google Maps, and of course Street View. If Apple is so "sure" about the quality of its maps, they should give us the posibility of recover Google Maps with the same characteristics as we had before, and of course the possibility of choosing between them. If they don't give us that possibility is because they are not so "sure" about their maps. In the future (years), it's possible that the new maps are equal or even better than Google Maps, but we live TODAY, and Google Maps has many years of advantage. Why don't we have both of them?????

I hope that all these comments are taken into account by Apple, or they will miss a lot of faithful followers (including me). When i bought my iPad, it had Goole Maps with Strret View; now i feel Apple has deceived me.

Today, i wouldn't advise anyone to buy an iPad/iPhone.

    * Sorry for my english.

"Ha! It's not ONE thing but a cumulation of MANY things..."

Well put, Sir. It is obviously part of Apple's culture to be quick to take credit for innovation, of which there are many, but refute any wrongdoing where there are problems.

It's not the antenna, you are holding the phone incorrectly, stupid. It's not a problem of Lion, it's the problem of 100s of third parties who failed to recognize and adapt to our latest, unannounced feature improvement...and the list goes on.

Where the mistake cannot longer be denied, we are offered half-hearted workarounds instead of a solution - here is your free, design-enhancing iPhone bumper, use SMB instead of AppleTalk, peasant, use the more inconvenient web version of Google maps, or flog out for a proper 3rd party app that actually does what it says on the tin.

"In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations." Alas, we will never know what they actually found. Oh the arrogance, oh the irony!

And that, right there, is the nub of the issue. When I bought my family's two ipads and three iPhones, they had a quality, integrated, working mapping system. Now they don't, for no other reason than Tim Cook's ego.

And it's BS for anyone to say "you didn't have to upgrade the OS, it was optional" - if I'd been told about Apple's new, disfunctional child there's no way I (or anyone) would have 'upgraded'.

As for Cook's platitudes - save them, Timbo. Turns out you're not the smartest guy in the world, after all. Just put it back like it was until you've fixed it.

You can stop looking. None of the other Map apps fully integrate like the firmware embedded versions...

The key words there are firmware and embedded...

The only quick answer is for Apple to open the signing window - allowing us all to revert to iOS 5.1.1 if we want to.

The alternative is for Apple to watch its loyal fan base disappear into the open arms of its competitors.

    What a great own goal.

Personally I feel like people are being a little ridiculous about this whole maps issue.  I travel alot and I've so far have not had any issues, now I'm not saying they don't exist but the alternative (google maps) wasn't perfect and I had it return bad POI information to me quite a bit.  Give it time, and stop acting like Apple is or has to be a perfect company!!!  Companies make mistakes, at least Apple is trying to fix the issue, and since it's a software issue it can easily be fixed.
