Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

"Yes, it is a fact that Maps is substandard and a disappointment.  Most people don't care.  The minority who actually depend on a smarthphone to get anywhere should be concerned about their dependence as much as the maps itself."

If most people didnt care, this would not be an issue. My iphone was bought 3 years ago, at least 30% on the strenght of google maps. Since that day, I, as obviously many others have come to rely on this app and use it in any way they see fit. For this app to be removed and replaced by a complete sub-standard alternative is unacceptable. That google maps exists on other platforms is completely annoying to know. Even worse is knowing that had we not upgraded to ios6, we would not need to hear of you.

You declare most people don't care. Obviously you and your 3 cats dont, but that is not news to anyone reading this forum.

Thanks to all for the tip about adding google maps to my home screen.  It took 10 seconds!

It's so easy to do that it's almost as if google are exploiting the frustration iPhone users have around the utter rubbishness of Apple Maps ... !

If most people didnt care, this would not be an issue.

If "most" of the 20+ million (so far) who've updated cared, there would be thousands more posting about it than there are.  This doesn't even come close to the "antennagate" threads for the iP4.

That google maps exists on other platforms is completely annoying to know.

In your entitled world, I suspect there is much that annoys you.  Spend more time reading and learning than worrying about what you think is owed to you, and you would know that  Google Maps is available now (web based and with street view within a week or so).

Obviously you and your 3 cats dont, but that is not news to anyone reading this forum.

Don't have any cats, but that's the brain damaged cliche world you can't think beyond.  Know lots of people and none are foaming at the mouth like yourself over this.  Maybe that's because the people I associate with are much more resourceful.

"Google Maps is available now (web based and with street view withing a week or so)"

Can you please post the link to where it has been confirmed that Streetview will be available on the web based Google maps on iOS 6 within a week or so?

Although this would not replace the functionality I had with iOS 5 I would find it helpful.

    Thank you

Google created this, are subtly exploiting it, and their supporting trolls have flocked here to exacerbate the ire.

Apple's Maps are rubbish right now, but they will improve and there are work-arounds that help to make the situation bearable in the interim. But from reading this thread you would think that Mapping was the number 1 criteria for buying a smartphone. In truth, it is one of many functions and while it may be sub optimal it is still viable.

I won't slam this thread entirely, because Apple do need to take their community's voice seriously, but there really are some folks on here who are behaving like children.

The maps were my number one priority for buying myself and my family iphones and ipads

The integration of maps with Streeview and with Contacts are the feature we require which we no longer have

The fundamental issue that Apple needs to address is the lack of street view in their new maps (Flyover is useless eyecandy).  When Google creates a maps app with it - or a separate street view app) (not just the web app), there needs to be a way to integrate it with the rest of the IOS.

What many in this thread are conveniently ignoring is that Google forced Apples hand in dropping them because they refused to support voice turn-by-turn as they do for the android OS.  Lack of turn-by-turn has been a major weak point of iPhone Google Maps.

I think it is incorrect to say, as somebody did above, that most people don't care about or use the Maps app, and if they did they should not be dependent on it.

I'm not a daily user, but thinking back I'm surprised at how often I really use it and have come to rely on it. I don't drive here in Tokyo, but depend on it to find things in the notoriously confusing Tokyo streets.

Just some examples from this month:

    • Needed to meet some friends at a restaurant I've never been to before.
    • Needed to get my moped fixed and find the repair shop.
    • Needed to find somebody's apartment building.
    • Needed to find a store I was interested in.
    • Needed to go to the ward office to deal with a stray cat.

I find I've gotten used to "just following the blue dot" on my iPhone to get there. Since I get around by walking and on a bicycle I certainly wouldn't want to carry around paper maps. I mean - isn't this one of the hugely hyped reasons for getting an iPhone to begin with?

But the Apple Maps doesn't show the block numbers in Tokyo! That's like not showing the street names in the U.S. It's just completely unusable.

It is unreasonable that Apple would release a new version that simply doesn't work here, thus breaking existing functionality. It's very difficult to understand how this passed any sort of QA testing.  It is bad for users. I think the complaining here is all extremely valid. It isn't "whining." And it is condescending to call it whining. It's a serious problem.

I do wish everybody would stop calling each other names though.

I live in Dubai and iLost Maps are useless here. I added the Web based Google Maps icon and it works but maybe at 30% of the performance I had with the full Google maps app on IOS 5. Unfortunately, we don't have a branch of the Apple company  here otherwise the consumer protection division of the department of economy would have force them to enable IOS 5 based on the false advertisement they made. Fooling consumers is taking here very seriously.

We has a recent issue with an annoying video and Google refused to block the links to that clip. Within hours a warning was sent to Google to block the access to these links or all their YouTube service would be blocked. Google responded on the spot.

    This is the misleading ad
