Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

    Jumblemo

Thank you for your last post.

We today instructed our advisors on that very point and papers will be served tomorrow.

We're muddling through with disjointed methods but it's made difficult because if you don't want to use Apple Maps, you cannot delete it or turn it off from being the default whenever an address is selected.

Our training before highlighted this positive  - so now we're having to undo all that.

Easy for a technical or experienced user to spot and manage but not so good for those less technically literate staff who have other fine qualities.

This I feel is set to rumble on.

We are far from alone in our actions...

I have it on good authority that a well known BBC tv consumer programme is looking into this. I dare say you've already thought of it but you've gotta love watching that dog..

In additional comment to Rudolfensis  - and in support of le.bouch and gkinchina,

I refer all newcomers to the summary of the issue I wrote back on page 53 of this topic.

What was said there got many thumbs up and is a rational and fair appraisal of the situation.

Please read that before commenting about the use of the web-based Google icon and other more inane suggestions.

The only thing that will fix this is Apple having the stand up cohones to say - "yup, we released it too early.

Help us make it better whilst we allow you the choice of going back if you want.."

That will win them customers instead if losing them.

If they leave it too long it gets harder, as people will say they are giving in to pressure.

Tim Cook - act now! Swiftly and decisively.

Allow an optional return path to iOS5.1.1  and pull a Phoenix out of the Ashes.

It's simple, but will his ego allow it?

    Le.bouch

I wonder who has been interviewed?

Not sure if they'll use us, another of the businesses affected or Jingling.

Yes- he who was barred for daring to speak out here.

    He was interviewed too.

His being barred from the forum after reflecting honest views makes great TV..

Oh Apple, what have you started...

    It should make good TV

If Apple care, they'll respond in the right way. If they don't care, then they have a bigger problem than iLost.

Incidentally, pages 53-54 of this thread decree that you should never, under any circumstances, suggest that Cook has an ego problem. I mentioned it once and think I got away with it...

Thanks for your advice but paying 500$ for a new phone is not a solution dude. That's like having my car brought in for a tune up and when I pick it up from the dealer, the v8 engine has been replaced with a lawn mower engine, then after I complain and want it fixed back to the way it was, the dealer says " quit crying about it! If you don't

Like it you can just buy a different car!"

You need to rethink your logic bro.

Forbes just ran a headline article. The situation isn't just blown out of proportion by trolls at all.. We APPLE users and FANS are the victims.

    Even more to the point.....

Forbes says we should be able to choose our own defaults in ios

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonykosner/2012/09/29/ios-6-map-flap-should-apple -let-users-select-alternate-default-apps/

This sums up what Apple needs to do to keep it's loyal customer base and ther are even more great ideas in the comments

I think all of us are saying the same thing in different ways.

It's clear that if you live/work in the US, Apple Maps "can" work "more or less"; but, if you live in any other country, they don't work at all.

If you buy now an iPhone/iPad, you can't complain, because you are buying IOS6. The problem is for those (including me) that bought a device with the Google Maps app: we have lost something that we had and that worked OK for us. We were said that the new app would be incredible, but it wasn't true, at least for the moment. I want to think it will be in the future...

I think the problem isn't to come back to IOS5 but to have Google Maps with the same characteristics as we had it before, maybe through the App Store??? Probably there are economic and proud hitches, but we must be confident that we can get it in a close future.

What's illogical is buying products from a company you don't like.  If you are promised a different engine in your car, you would return it.  Most companies will give you an Android phone for nothing.  You can then sell your phone for something.  If people are as unhappy as they want Apple to think they are, they have a course of action.  Expressing your frustration is one.  Moving your dollars is another.  If this argument is going to be all about emotion, you're going to have to be ready to respond sometime.  Considering the number of people who have adopted iOS 6, and the small percentage of those people who are upset, I don't see Apple changing back.

You should read what else Peter Cohan writes about Apple before you post his articles.  He writes a lot of speculative stuff that ends up being wrong.

Just a quick comment form an Apple iPhone 5 user in the states. In the past, when Apple releases something new, there is an even larger innovation around the corner. I believe Apple could imrpove their current issue with their Maps App by working with solid GIS firms such as Mandli Communications, Inc. They currently house hundreds of thousands of miles of geographic data which is remarkably robust.

? Buying a product from a company I don't like? Who ever said I didn't like apple when I bought my phone and iPad? And when did the salesman tell me they were going to change out my v8 with a lawnmower engine? I seem to be saying one thing and you are arguing another.  And of your posts that i have read, you seem to be quite emotional and caught up in arguing that these people have no right to be upset. I just wanted to state that I personally am not happy with the new maps because of a huge decrease in detail, the loss of the public transit option that came in so handy to use the subways on my trip to New York and most importantly the fact that the alpine lakes wilderness lakes are no longer labeled so I have lost a vital tool for my main hobby.

"If you dont like it, Just go buy another phone"? Do you think that's how a successful business is run?  Now I am emotional!

Did Apple promise Google Maps?  I'm confused.
