Q: Apple maps very disappointing

Having just downloaded iOS 6 I am hugely disappointed with apple maps. In the UK many town names are wrong, with some missing; roads are all the same colour; satellite image resolution is not as good as it was previously. Sure, the 3D map in London is good but it only covers an area a few square miles, so is currently more of a gimmick.

So questions i have...

1) Are others experiencing the same?

2) Will it get better and if so how quickly?

3) Will there be a google maps app released soon?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

So explain how google maps had turn by turn directions and how you went from point a to b using them? Google maps were just useless for any real navigation. Tom Tom can use your addresses in contacts to navigate using turn by turn. Just like the new apple maps does. Tom Tom also uses search to find addresses. No cut n paste required. Also poi's are in it as we'll as all the mapping data so you don't even need a data connection like apple maps or google. Now if that doesn't explain thar Tom Tom was 50 time better than google then I don't know what to say to you all except go and buy the app. What I am trying to say but it seems to be falling on deaf ears is that there are other options besides google or apple maps.

The Tom Tom app description says:

"NAVIGATE TO COPIED ADDRESSES: easily select locations you found on websites or other apps by copying their addresses and pasting into the Tom Tom navigation app."

There is NO integration with safari.

Why would you need it. You can search inside the app.

Yes it does hold up you just don't want to see that testing any software no matter who makes it before deploying it business wide is the smart thing to do. Upgrading your system without testing is your fault.

How are you supposed to test a software you cannot uninstall and for which no test platform is available?

Even if negative feedback is building up, how are you able to assess whether any reported problems apply to you?

The maps seem to work somehow in the US, in Europe we have a flashback to the 90s, in other parts of the world it's like it's based on map data drafted by Senecca the Elder.

Releasing a US centric service for a global product takes some Chuzpe and apparently doesn't go down well in the rest of the world...

At this point in time, the only timely solution is a downgrade option to 5.1.1 which allows every customer to make a desision on which features are more important.

To withhold this choice and you insinuating that we would whinge about the loss of iOS6 features is adding insult to injury and I take issue with that suggestion. I have to agree with previous posts, your replies are not helpful at all.

Also just checked on my Tom Tom app and Facebook is even integrated along with google search so anything you can find with google maps will be found in Tom Tom.

KC7GNM Please read thru this before posting. Your asking questions that has been answered before.

Non of the map apps are integrated with Address book or callender.

I would love to go back to 5.1.1 I have tested ios 6 and it is not to my satisfaction.

    Please show me how.

    KC7GNM,

Personally I don't use Calendar for that either but I know many do.  Perhaps someone else can chime in on that.

I do use the Safari integration quite a bit.  If I am traveling looking for any Business, Park, etc. I look it up on Safari to see opening times, admission fees, etc and then touch the address to be taken to Maps to see where they are.

KC7GNM you are wasting your time.

The folks in this forum are not looking for pragmatic answers, they are trying to keep the noise levels up to force Apple to allow them to revert to the pre-iOS6 state.

Nothing but a return to GoogleMaps as the system default map is going to be acceptable. So the fact that TomTom does have address book integration is not going to make a difference. They are convinced they have the moral right, and the legal right. They are probably optimistic on both counts, but I for one am enjoying the prospect of them exercising those rights.

Apple may relent and allow a return to 5.1, but I'm not sure what that achieves, the Google licence ends in 12 months, and Google won't give Apple many of the functions lost

Well the next thing they would be screaming about in a year will be demanding that apple renew the license with google. Amazing these people make this much noise over nothing. Same thing happened with antennagate. Now it is mapgate. What will be the next big thing folks will complain about. It is a phone, not the end all utility that must do every thing the way you want it. Not directing this at you but to the tons of people here that thinks that apple is just gonna bend over and give them google back. Apparently they haven't been keeping track of how Steve Jobs said he wanted to go thermonuclear on google for stealing from apple.

I couldn't care less if Apple replaced or supplemented its Map app with Google maps, bought the Tom Tom app and made it as functional as the original app, or any other solution that restored the full functionality of the original map.

It's almost unreal that I can have two devices that operate completely differently with respect to maps/navigation/map data at the same time (iPad 1 and iPhone 4) as the result of a system update.

How is a "solution" that does not restore full functionality "pragmatic"? It surely is not realistic.

    You completely missing the point.

If Apple maps was working this would never had happened. What you and KC7GNM is saying is actually contradicting Apple's CEO last response.

Giving people who needs a working map should be able to go back to 5.1.1, you are happy with ios 6 and you should be able to stay with that.

That would give Apple a year to get there map op to a much better standard then it is now.

    Everyone would be happy.

    Don't you agree ?

Working in the industry I have come across Mandli Communications several times myself, and I would love to see some of their data integrated into Apple Maps. They have been working with mobile LiDAR for a while, as well as terrain modeling. I am sure they could produce some awesome and detailed models of cities, and even natural landmarks.

Man..for God's sake just tell me why you are trying to defend a product that the CEO of the company which produced it had apologised.

Why are you trying to make all these gymnastic twisted answers to use other software while all we want is to get the same software we used a week ago and we were super happy with it.

Who are you in Apple to say that this wouldn't or can't happen? Who are you in this universe to tell us to go and buy Garmin? What pushes you to say so? Aren't you ashamed defending a position of a company that made the pressing need of groups of its loyal customer become "downgrading" and even it plays them the deaf after that?

What would apple lose if it would allow me being living in Dubai and currently travelling to Riyadh Saudi Arabia to revert back to IOS 5 because their IOS 6 is of no good use to me. Today I checked the location of my hotel in Saudi on Apple map and all I got was a Pin in national park in the US? what is this crap. I swear this level of lack of quality isn't acceptable or tolerable for a freshman year studnet on a project of a 3 credit hours course. AlFaisalia Hotel in Riyadh which is a landmark of this city appears in a wood in the US by an application made by a US company???

It is neglegance, ignorance, desrespect, stupidity, arrogance of Apple to produce such application. They want their own they would have been 1000 times better off removing Google and not puting their crap product instead followed by an apology. Who plans for these people?

Under which law users are requested against their will to enhance the software of a company that sold it to them?

    As le.bouch just said...Go Away
