Thanks, and how refreshing to have someone here be offering a practical solution and lay it out in a comprehensible manner. I will take the time today to obtain the Apps you mention and see if we can make them work for us.
From what you say, and after almost a week of tearing my hair out in frustration - I am daring to hope...
Much appreciated.
Just hope we can get the fat lady singing...

Perhaps a fair response - and my earlier comments possibly a little unfair on you on that instance.
It should still be pointed out that a few of your later comments were not as helpful.
I should forgive that. Apologies.
Your solution of finding other iPads still on iOS5 is one we are exploring - though it is as you point out an expensive solution with a flaw, but not of your making.
I have to tell you that the debate with my fellow directors is one that says;
"Why if Apple have unilaterally controlled the application and firmware without regard for it's customers, would it not be possible for this to happen to us again if we went the route of buying in iOS5 devices?"
It's a tough one to respond to... I can't, they have a point.
There lies the rub. This little fiasco has totally undermined the trust that many people had in Apple.
It was because of that trust that customers put up with minor issues and inconveniences - with a very minor example being not being able to delete unused apps like newsstand.
That trust has gone, and if you like Apple have now joined the mainstream and got down in the dirt with everyone else.
This is a sad time, as to me, ethics, delivering on promises and not being afraid to go back if you mess up are sound business principles.
As a result of that lack of trust now, I think we may just move platform where we are more in charge of our destiny.
I suspect others who previously had not even considered platform change are now doing so for similar reasons.
It's a very big own goal.

Oct 2, 2012 1:08 AM in response to gkinchinaby Adam Getliff,One of the things that I have learned in my time on this planet, is that if a new shiny pot of sunflower seeds appears in the clearing then it is often best to sit and see what happens to the other primates who rush in and stick their hand in the jar.
Now, I AM an early adopter, but usually sit back for a little while to see what happens, although I do enjoy the challenge of fixing a problem.
What I would say is this. IF your livelihood is threatened by a non-working maps then you may wish to observe the early adopter monkeys and see what happens before rushing over and sticking your hand in the jar.
And, if you really, seriously, are so challenged that a non-functioning map would cause death, then you probably ought to stay indoors.
There are endless stories or people driving into rivers, up train lines with Tom Tom, Garmin, whoever. Frankly, they didn't ought to be let out on their own.
So, in summary - rush over and sick your hand in the jar and take the consequences. It's not rocket science and this app is not running a missile guidance system.
I have updated, but can live without maps for the time being in the same way I managed quite fine without my Garmin once upon a time.
I haven't tried the roll back suggestions, but might later on just for the fun of seeing if I can get it to work.
If evolution has tought us one thing it is that the monkeys who stick their hand in the jar and are not bright to extract it again, probably die out in the long term.

I am trying to use the "report problem" function in the Apple Maps app.
After tapping "Report problem" , I select "search results are incorrect".
I tap "next" and get a page with Previous Searches.
The Next button is not active.
The only thing I can do is use the Cancel Button.
How am I supposed to report an incorrect search result?
You have to select from the recent search that was incorrect, then the Next button becomes active.
My issues with Maps are:
- I live in Thailand, and all street names are exclusively in Thai scripts (which I cannot read, same goes for practically all foreigners living here or visiting)
- this makes Find My iPhone and Find Friends totally useless
- the number of incorredt results I find.
Do you suggest that the Maps application should somehow translate the street signs, or should Apple insist that street signs should not use the local language?

Oct 2, 2012 1:14 AM in response to Adam Getliffby lynnfromleigh,Please Adam, do some research before posting.
The link you posted:
"Then that will be why they are making other mapping applications available to you
This not work? http://www.stuff.tv/news/apple-news/how-to/how-to-get-google-maps-back-onto-your -iphone"
On the page you linked it says: Instructions adapted from MacLife
This is the original:
http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_downgrade_back_ios_5
If you read the comments beneath the instructions you will see that no-one has been able to get this to work as Apple have closed the required signing window preventing anyone going back to iOS5
If anyone has tried this (since Apple closed the signing window) then please post with the results

Oct 2, 2012 1:19 AM in response to Adam Getliffby JBDelivery,Adam Getliff,
You're new to this thread - and although much of what you say here is factually correct, you have not factored in the trust that Apple built over the last 20 years, where everything normally just worked.
OK the odd thing may have been a bit quirky and got fixed - but it still worked.
Apple Maps does not work.
By preventing a roll back Apple have turned functional devices into non functioning ones.
This has now broken that bond of Trust.
Please read as much of the thread as you feel able, and I am certain that you'll find that you gain a better understanding of all the issues before then commenting.
Thanks.

Oct 2, 2012 1:22 AM in response to Derek Fernandezby Maps Mad,Derek - I see your post. A couple of things you may be interested in.
Apple Maps is based in part on Tom Tom so buying that may not help you.
You might consider the Maps+ app which is cheap and searches adresses very well. It uses Google Satellite and Google standard mapping which even shows the street number under the pin. When looking at the information about the pin Maps+ also gives you coordinates which you can put into any other mapping system, including Apple Maps and be confident that it is accurate.
Finally, almost noone seems to know that Apple Maps, crappy though it is, is vector based, requires very little data and saves to your cache so that it can be used offline. Try this; look at a point in Apple maps through wifi etc - switch to airplane mode so that no data can come in - look at the Apple map again - its still there even in greater detail!!!
Nevertheles Apple maps is rubbish compared with Google, gpsmotion x, Memory map, Navigon, mapswithme, streetviewer, PD maps, nearmap and many others....

Yes, as you might expect we have a full copy of iOS 5.1.1 sat on the desktop ready to blow across into our devices.
I have tried it twice a day for nearly a week.
(I'm hoping Apple will quietly re-open the signing window)
Each time it rejects the software on Apple approval.

Oct 2, 2012 1:44 AM in response to Adam Getliffby gkinchina,Adam,
Here are some of the things I have learned on the planet -
1. Calling 100 million people monkeys is not polite
2. Being inconsiderate and using similar monkey terminology for the 10-40 million people who are physically or mentally challenged for no fault of theirs, is not civil
3. Companies that upgrade ther customer's equipment to something problematic either recall the upgrade or compensate the customers or give them back the stuff that worked. Especially if millions of people are effected and it is being spoken about lots in media. Companies that dont do so, at the minimum lose customers and loyalty and at maximum, if people get really hurt (as is possible), the management goes to jail.
It is a very simple thing. Apple, Just give us a button to press so that we go back to IOS Maps 5 while you fix IOS Maps 6. And, warn people - tell them in every way possible that it is not a ready product and that it must not be used where it can cause harm - life, limb, money - whatever.

Thanks Tonefox for your help.
The "report problem" happened every time I used Contacts to search. That search never appeared in search results.
After starting the search over without using Contacts your solution worked.
Neverhteless, search from Contacts should have the same resut?
As for the street names in Thailand, I am not asking Apple not to use the Thai script but to do waht others do, the put them in Thai script as well as a transliteration into Latin characters; this goes for Google Maps, Bing Maps, Nokia, Maps+, and even Nostra, which is a Thailand only map, produced in Thailand.
Thanks again Tonefox.

Oct 2, 2012 5:10 AM in response to gkinchinaby Adam Getliff,I made no reference to disabled people. You drew that conclusion. Round here the types of people who drive in to rivers while gawping at that satnavs are not disabled, just stupid.
Nobody held a gun to your head and made you upgrade.
man up!

Oct 2, 2012 4:01 AM in response to skparkesby le.bouch,Can I make a suggestion, aimed at the mysterious Apple informers and those that have the power to edit, delete and remove members?
Change the title of this thread to "Apple maps very disappointing, except generally to those in the USA".
Maybe then people will not feel compelled to chime in with "it works ok for me" and not feel the need to defend the indefensible.
