Apple maps satellite imagery doesn't work

After upgrading to iOS 6 and eagerly trying out the new maps , I was met with disappointment as the satellite imagery function doesn't work, I'm left with a pin surrounded by complete blackness. The normal map view works fine and so do all the other features . Except hybrid and satellite so this includes flyover and all the 3d goodies.

Help?

Same here :-(

Updated my iPad 3 and iPhone 4s to iOS 6.0 (10A403) earlier today. The process went smoothly for both but when testing I found a problem with the new maps app. Satellite imagery (while not particularly detailed outside of large cities) works perfectly for London and allows 3D flyover but only on the iPad.

On the iPhone, maps work in standard view but switch to satellite or hybrid view and the imagery is replace with a black screen. The phone looks like it's trying to retrieve information (circular update symbol appears in the status bar) but nothing changes.

A little disappointing this bug was missed during testing and I hope Apple issue an update soon (I'd guess we're not the only ones experiencing this problem).

Maybe, but I didn't pay £600 to become a beta tester for Apple. Google maps worked and worked well. Navigation has been a key selling point since the first iPhone and my user experience has deteriorated markedly with the introduction of iOS 6.0.

If I could roll back, I would but Apple won't let us do that. They haven't given us new maps because that's the best possible solution, they've done it because they want to distance themselves from the creators of Android. If they valued customer opinion then they'd at least provide a Google alternative and allow people to choose which is the default mapping app. Unfortunately Apple now believes its own hype and customers have become something to be tolerated ("it's Apple so they'll buy it regardless" mentality).

A pity as I would have previously considered myself a "fanboy" who's owned a 3GS, 4, now a 4s (not to mention the iPad 3 I'm typing this on while listening to my Nano).

We're talking about apples and you're talking about oranges. It isn't that the satellite imagery is poor quality, or that things are located in the wrong spots, or even that the 3D stuff looks like the apocalypse has hit. We don't have anything but standard maps. Satellite and flyover aren't working at all. The entire screen is solid black.

I just got off the phone with AppleCare and of course they walked me through factory restoring the device. It took care of the issue and I now have the satellite view and flyover. I assume that there was a problem with the upgrade and by restoring the device to factory from within iTunes it does a clean install of iOS 6. Just be sure to do a backup before hand and then restore from that backup afterwards so you don't lose any data and have to set everything up again.

This worked for me, too! I did an "erase all content and settings," then restored from an iCloud backup, and satellite/3D map imagery is now working. Thanks!
