I'm having the same problem too. After updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 6, the headphone buttons do nothing. I cannot change the volume, launch Siri, etc.
Try the following:
- A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order
I have the same issue on my 4S, and I can confirm that it's not a hardware issue because it worked until I updated to iOS6, and on my sons 4 the same thing is happening. This is disturbing to be honest.
Well, did a complete pain in the rear reset on the phone and restore and still no joy. I will try syncing to iTunes later but not holding out much hope.
Exactly the same issue, headphones work (as in I can hear) but the buttons are now completely dead and I am unable to get them working. This whole update is absolutely dire and I can only blame myself for updating so soon, I should have know better.
Was able to confirm on a friends 4S that with iOS 5 the headphone buttons work, and as soon as iOS 6 is loaded they no longer work confirming its not a hardware issue such as a bad jack or headphones. I'm gonna open a case with Apple and reference this discussion thread to show that others are having this issue and maybe they'll even touch base with others having this problem. I'll post the results here.
According to Apple, what most likely is going own is iOS 6 corrupted the headphone hardware. So for $30, they are sending me a loaner phone and I have to send mine in for repair. Probably the first time I've heard of software corrupting hardware like this, and I've been in IT for almost 20 years!
Exactly same with mine-upgraded to ios6 on my 4s thought it was my headphones so tried another pair and they were the same. Try the same headphones on ipad3 with ios6 and all is fine.
Try the same headphones on 3GS and also iPhone 4 with ios5 and fine just won't work with 4s
I am as well having this same issue. I have a 4S running iOS 6. I've tried a few different headphones and none of the buttons work. I have tried the headphones in my iPad 2 running iOS 6 and the buttons work fine. Very frustrating. I've also tried restarting and resetting my phone. Both of which didn't fix the issue. :(
Hi all, any update on this? I have the same problem and aint comftable. >:0
Replacing the hardware did fix it but I have asked apple to give me a post-mortem report on the old hardware. I am very curious if the iOS update corrupted the headphone hardware or something else or if upgrading from iOS 4 to 5 to 6 caused the issue because the replacement 4S came with 5.1 and I upgraded to 6 without the issue.
Any soluction???? My iPhone 3GS have the same problem after the update... earpods controls do not respond. The headsets works on my iPod touch 3rd Gen iOS 5.
My issue was resolved with a replacement 4s. Never heard of a headphone jack getting hosed by a software update so that's interesting.
Same issue here,
Earpods works (there is sound) but the volume controls don't. Strangely, the same earpods works when connected to my iPad running the same OS version
I have the same issue
My earphones work with my iPod touch with the same OS but when I plug them into my iPhone the buttons don't work. I even tried using earphones of different brands. No change in the results.
