It is an bug wich appears in ios 6. Hope apple will fix it soon.
My iMessage miraculously started working this afternoon. I don't know it it was a delayed effect of all the resetting and other things I tried that were suggested in earlier posts, but it works now! Including iMessages to Italy!
Good luck to everyone with this problem and hopefully Apple will stay on top of the bug fixes.
Congrats.
I would recommend though to not reset your phone or your connection because it will most likely stop working.
Amazing iMessages has started to work again for no apparent reason...
I reset my iPad, iMessage works fine now can send messages and photos
Have been having MAJOR issues with imessage, basically not being able to send or receive imessage for like hours at a time. Anyways, turning on the 3g option has seemed to have fixed the problem. Dont know if its a random coincidence, but turned it on and my imessage has began to work again. Ill update later to see if this is a viable fix until apple (hopefully) releases a fix
I had exactly the same problem except on my iPhone 4S. iMessage would not turn on it was stuck on waiting for activation. I tried everything I could think off and read in different threads.
Nothing worked. iMessage would not turn on.
What I finally did was this.
I went into Settings/iCloud and clicked on Delete Account. It asked if I want to keep the data on the phone and I said yes. This will remove the iCloud account from the phone so make sure you have latest backup of your data before doing this.
After the iCloud account was removed I went into iMessage settings and it finally was activated.
After I made sure iMessage was working again I went back to the iCloud settings and activated it again and synced it with the phone again.
Everything works like before except with working iMessage. I hope this helps some that have similiar problems with activating iMessage.
Did you "use your apple ID for iMessage"? or just wait for it to activate on it's own?
Try settings>wifi> choose your network and click renew lease at the bottom.
Don't think that will help in my case, since my problem occurs upon first connecting to the network. Every time I begin a new connection, I have to maintain that connection for several minutes before iMessage spontaneously starts working.
To clarify, in case anyone is paying attention to this thread, I'm having this problem on a new iPad, wi-fi only model. Mine is not hanging at "waiting for registration" as some people have described; by all indications it SHOULD be working, but it neither sends or receives messages for several minutes after connecting to wifi. The connection is solid and other apps are getting Internet access, but iMessage just refuses to work.
Sorry. "Waiting for activation" is the problem I was describing as not being my particular problem.
Mine isn't workin either..tried everything!..c'mon apple!
Hi, a few of us have been discussing the issue with iMessage failing with bluetooth tethering in this thread:
After reading through some of the posts as I have the same problem I cannot send a reply via iMessage but I can receive them. I tried sending a reply via Siri and it worked! I still cannot send a reply by typing one though any ideas anyone?

that is the problem i am experiencing on both my ipad 2 (Wifi only version) and ipod touch. for the ipad imessage will usually start working again within a hour or connecting to wifi however my ipod touch takes several hours for it to start working. also, apple's email app will not push/fetch messages during the time imessage isn't working. However, all of my other apps are working just fine.
