I've been having this issue too
I can't add my friend-who has imessage on her iphone, to my contacts for imessage
we both have it turned on
I think you are misunderstanding how imessage works. If imessage is active on both phones imessage is selected and sent automatically. You don't have to define the reciepients address as an iMessage. iPhone does it automatically.
The problem might be that a iMessage didn't activate properly or b the account authorization haven't worked.
First make sure the iMessage is active. Once it is and it still doesn't work make sure your apple id is setup properly by going to imessage settings and select send & recieve, click on your apple id and select view account.
If that still doesn't work you can try resetting all settings that will keep all your media but will reset all settings.
but it's all set up properly on mine (I dunno for the others with this problem) i've turned it off and back on and it still wont let me send her messages. (we both have checked it all)
Try sending her a message using her apple id email address and not phone number.... if that works it means that her phone number is not connected to her apple id.
I did try sending her a message, it didn't work, and she checked it and said its on. It won't even let me re add her apple id aperently. (I just checked that now)
Hard to say what can be wrong then. Usually it should work when you send the imessage email address. If that doesn't work maybe you and her should reset the settings and try setting up imessage again.
had to reset my router last night, which means my wifi had to be reset. low and behold once i did that, imessage stopped working on both my ipod and ipad (wifi only version). Tried reseting, rebooting, etc.. nothing worked. Then a couple hours ago, imessage started working on my ipad without me doing anything. However, i still haven't managed to get it back working again on my ipod.
but the common occurence is that imessage will stop sending/receiving messages once i reset the wifi connection.
ive got a similar issue, ive basically just got an iPhone 4S on the 3 network, however, my facetime keeps failling to activate, i have transferred my number over from O2 which has successfully been transferred, and for some reason, when i turn on facetime, it is trying to verify the number that got sent with my phone,(not the number that got ported over), do you know how to fix this? or do i have to go into the 3 store to remedy it?
i'm having this problem also.
i have an iphone 4, it's sprint service BUT i don't have service on it.. basically using my iphone as an ipod...(stopped paying my bill = phone services disconnected) anyways, before i did the update, i could still use imessage as long as i had wifi. now after the update i cannot "activate" imessage or facetime.. what's up with that? ipods do not have phone service, and you can imessage on those, but you can't on a disconnected phone? i don't understand.. i get it that it has to be sent and recieved through my itunes account email.. but i just don't know what else to do..
not happy with this update ):
oh, forgot to mention.. when i did the update my phone got stuck in recovery mode and i had to reset it multiple times before it actually turned on and let me go through the beginning set up process.
at least i now know im not the only one in the same situation, im going to be generous and give them untill the end of the week (This Friday), if it doesnt work by then, i will go to either the Apple Shop, or the 3 store to hopefully get the issue fixed, otherwise i will go nuts
I'm not sure if someone has posted this scenario so please be gentle with the newbie...
My problem with iMessage is that I cannot send an iMessage OUT but once someone replies to my SMS then the conversation converts to iMessage. So none of my contacts show up as active iMessage recipients until they reply; then we have an iMessage conversation. Does that make sense?
And if I delete the conversation thread, I cannot send an iMessage to that contact until they first reply again to a new SMS or they initiate a new iMessage conversation on their own.
I have tried everything suggested here to no avail.
I had the exact same situation when upgrading to IOS 6 , what I did was : I turned off iMessage and I rebooted my phone it came on and again and of course I turned iMessage on as well but before rebooting my iPhone I also logged out of FaceTime and log out of the App Store ( if you don't use FaceTime there is no need to log out) if you have further questions please don't hesitate.
Hope I could help still new here
ALL iDevices apply to this situation
This is still Not working.
I must say I'm shocked! Everybody is talking about the maps in ios6.
Why is this iMessage problem not discussed more openly?
Has apple even acknowledged that there is a problem with iMessage in ios6?
Are they working on this? Does anyone know? This is outrageous!
I would like to use imessage maybe 25 times a day, since the wifi only iPad can't send normal SMS.
The maps I might use once in two weeks. So why is all the web criticizing the new map app in ios6?
I don't get it. THIS is a much more pressing issue for many users. But hardly discussed.
Xman,
I've wondered too about the lack of any word from Apple about this. Nothing is noted anywhere about it, or about any problems. The web is just speaking about Maps as you said. This Friday will make it 4 weeks since the trouble started and there is no word from Apple yet or any solution.
