when it finished it said connect to itunes and so i plugged it in and then it said to restore and update software so i did that. Now it just has the apple logo and is doing nothing

Can you reboot the iPad?
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Try that and then try to restore again.
