You are absolutely right there is no reason why this should not work with the New ipad 3G models.

I have a free sat nav app from the app store that knows exactly where I am with wifi turned off, I have not even installed a sim card yet so the glonass system (Russian version of GPS) works fine without GPS or wifi enabled. The reason I brought the 3G version was not for the 3G on its own but more for the GPS, as a GPS dongle for the Ipad is about £100 so I thought Id get it built in for the same price.

I agree, it is completely impossible to understand why the iPad cannot serve location based reminders.

I carry it around as much if not more than my iPhone. It seems predestined to serve as a locationbased reminder, more so since entering reminders just like calendar entries is so much easier on the bigger keyboard.

@Apple: Please fix that with an upcoming iOS Fix.

    From:  http://www.apple.com/hk/en/osx/whats-new/features.html

    "Location-based reminders

Add a location to a reminder on your Mac, and receive a notification on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac when you depart from or arrive at that location.*6"

    Notice foot note 6:

"Location-based reminders on iPad requires iOS 6."

So why is it not working?!?

because this is a bug and they do not want to admit it, simply, they prefer to update their site (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4970) but they forgot that this features was listed on other part of their website.

You can also see it is supposed to be in there in Scott Forstall's WWDC presentation this summer.

Right at the end he put up a slide detailing some of the 200 new features of iOS 6 and "Location Based Reminders for iPad" is on there (near top left @ 1:47:17)

I have an iPad 2 and iPhone 4S both running iOS 6.  I also have an iMac running 10.8.2. I can add location based reminders from my Mac and my iPhone, but not the iPad.  Strange. I assume they will add this functionality to the iPad at some point.

I am having the same issue with iPad 3 (3g) running the iOS 6. I thought it was just a product placement issue as blocking SMS messages, but it should work since it is promissed.

I have noticed that wikipedia reports this feature to be removed from "Golden Master" (being apparently the release version). Hopefully it will be reenabled in 6.1.

I've spoken extensively with Apple engineers regarding this issue.  The feature is no longer support which is why it's since been removed from the original KB article.  They did say/admit that is was originally intended to be a feature supported on the 3rd gen iPads but were unaware of the reasons for pulling that back.

During the last conversation it was hinted at being something they would be focusing on during the next release but obviously no promises were made.

So to be clear.  Location based reminders do not work on iPads period.  This was a feature I was looking forward to, so hopefully we'll see it working in the next verision of IOS.

What's crazy about this is that location-based reminders do, in fact, work on the iPad.  What does not work is telling Siri to create a location-based reminder.  I use the app called "2Do", and it can create and utilize location-based reminders just fine.  The missing functionality is their creation in Siri, that's it.

Yes, they do work with third party apps.  They don't work with the built in Reminders app which is where Siri looks to create the reminder.  I imagine that as Siri's API opens up more, you will be able to select default applications for that type of task.

They also work perfectly with the Find My Friends App, from Apple -- I've set alerts to go out when I arrive at work, and when I arrive home, and they work faultlessly. Just wish they'd work in Reminders (with, or without Siri). Hoping it was a minor issue that caused Apple to pull the feature, and that they'll appear in an update soon.
