Any idea what happened? My desktop is white with diagonal lines, only 3-4 of them-- I can see all the stuff on the desktop still, and everything seems to be working, but there is clearly something wrong here. clues?

Try a pram reset:
Powr off the MNP, power it back on before the start up chime press and hold the following keys:
Optio, command,P,R(no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the chime 2 times.
Reboot, see if it helps.

Thanks. I had already restored the desktop from the System Preferences, but reset the PRAM anyway... it didn't solve the other problem I am having-- I am trying to add someone to a Yahoo-group and get this error:

Use Software Update to update your os and anything else that needs to be updated.
Also see if your model Macbook Pro qualifies - MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues. The affected computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008.
everything is up to date. There are no video issues. I'm thinking this is a Yahoo issue.

You are having video issues (white lines on your display). In this case video does not mean movies or music videos. Did you read the link I posted?
I am running Snow Leopard, I don't want to update my system for reasons I won't go into here. I run software update regularly. I have fixed my display issue and am now working on the error 999 issue with yahoo.
You misunderstood me. Your message board profile should be updated-edited to show you are actually using 10.6.8.
