Desktop is white with diagonal lines!

Any idea what happened? My desktop is white with diagonal lines, only 3-4 of them-- I can see all the stuff on the desktop still, and everything seems to be working, but there is clearly something wrong here. clues?

Thanks. I had already restored the desktop from the System Preferences, but reset the PRAM anyway... it didn't solve the other problem I am having-- I am trying to add someone to a Yahoo-group and get this error:
