Always getting a smiley face when printing

I am connecting to ip printer on the ibook G4 mac os x operating system and it is locating the printer and giving me the correct printer name and type. But when i try print a word document to that printer i always get a little smiley face in the top left hand corner instead of the content i wanted. Any Ideas?, thanks.
