ios update issue error?

on my ipad i dcided one time to update to ios 5.1.1 but it froze during the update on my ipad 2, so i reset it and now i can't update and want to update to ios 6, what should i do and also when i update to ios 6 will it erase my ipad like the ipod touch with ios 5?
