ios update issue error?

a while ago i tried to update to ios 5.1.1 and it froze during the update and now u cant update to ios 5.1.1 and it wont let me upgrade to ios 6 it wont show up as an availiable update like on my ipod touch. Also when i update my ipad 2 to ios 6 through my computer will it erase everything on my ipad 2 like ios 5 did with my ipod touch 4th gen?
