HDMI display issues after 10.8.2

Yes. I checked the receipts; MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update V1.0 was installed immediately after the OS X 10.8.2 upgrade.

As of this time, still no further news from Apple.

If this has happened on a MBP from 2010 with 10.8.2 but no firmware update, then it must be something having to do with the OS and MBP video cards.

What is so strange is that Apple didn't pick this up in their testing, especially on rMBPs, which just came out.

I am using the Retina Display MacBook Pro and am connecting to a Samsung External Monitor with a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter. After installing the 10.8.2 update, my Samsung external monitor and my MacBook pro displays both went black. Everything worked fine prior to the installation of the update.

(The MacBook display starts to works fine again when I disconnect the external monitor.)

I reset the SMC and the PRAM, and this allowed me to use the external monitor when the MacBook Pro is closed, but not when it is open.

When I took my computer to a differnet monitor (an HP External Monitor) and hooked it up using the same Thunderbolt to DVI adapter, everything worked fine...the MacBook screen and the HP screen both work.

So my problem is the combination of the Samsung Monitor with the new update. Apple rep told me that I need to talk to Samsung about updates for the monitor. Samsung, so far is telling me that there are not updates, that my monitor is a plug and play. They told me that the problem may be the adapter, but I was using this same adapter with success before the update.

I am posting this so that others know to try different external monitors if they are having problems. I am disappointed that I may not be able to use my Samsung external monitor anymore.

After the 10.8.2 update, I can use my Apple Thunderbolt Display only with my Retina Display MacBook Pro open. In order to do even that, I had to go into System Preferences, select Displays, then select Arrangement and enable mirror displays. I don't know if something that simple will fix your problem. I would try resetting the SMC and the PRAM as you did so that I could use my display with the computer closed, but I have no idea what those things are! I'll try to find out.

I don't even /see/ Arrangement under Displays when the HDMI is not plugged in, and when it is plugged in, the screen is black, so I can't see anything. (In my iMac, where there are no external monitor problems with 10.8.2, the arrangement icon does appear in the menu bar when the external monitor is plugged in.)

I want to mention again that if I boot into safe mode in the rMBP, there is no problem, and the external monitor works fine. I don't know what this means, and neither does Apple at this point, but it suggests some sort of software interference, i.e., something is loading in normal mode that isn't loading in safe mode, and perhaps it only interferes when the updated firmware had been installed. The problem is figuring out what that "something" is.

I don't expect to hear anything more from Apple Support until the beginning of the week, but if I do I'll post it here.

I have now installed the newest driver for my Samsung Monitor and it still does not work with the rMBP. My HP External Monitor works fine (using the Thunderbolt to DVI adapter) and my Phillips HD TV works fine (using the HDMI cord.)

I have exactly the same problem. I found Mountain Lion the buggiest OS I've used in my life, and that includes Windows, and I had high hopes installing 10.8.2.

Result? I just lost HDMI on my TV, as described in this post. This *****!!!!! Seriously, what's happening to Apple?

123bart, I just did the same thing you did--switched to Thundrbolt DVI adapter with DVI-HDMI adapter at other end of the DVI cable to plug into TV, and it no longer blacks out the screen. (I had been using this arrangement with my iMac.)

So, that solves the problem for me if I want to switch cables from the iMac to the rMBP. I hadn't been in panic mode because I had been using the iMac for the TV instead of the rMBP.

But that doesn't mean it isn't an issue for people with only a rMBP and HDMI cables--they would have to buy two adapters, one for TB to DVI and the other for DVI-HDMI, and they would lose the sound capability in HDMI (which I don't use for unrelated reasons).

As for what is happening to Apple, jbcortes, read Joe Nocera's article today in the NY Times. Not a pretty picture what they did to the maps in iOS 6. Steve Jobs' departure was untimely both for him and for Apple. I saw this happen to Apple in the early 1990s, and the company didn't get resurrected until Jobs came back. Is there another Jobs out there, somewhere?

Thanks Ken, will read the article. Obviously having to buy adapters for something that worked fine before the "update" is not option.

Was about to get an iPhone but there it goes.

This issue has absolutely screwed me up today. I put together a movie of old photos to be played at my Uncle's 60th birthday party and it just would not work. Kept getting the black screen. Thanks Apple, after hours of going through photos and creating a video, it couldn't be played when it needed to due to the software update to 10.8.2.

Get it fixed.

I have this exact same problem! HDMI out to my Samsung 50" plasma was working perfectly with my MBP Retina under Mountain Lion until the 10.8.2 update. Now I get the black screen and only the cursor.

Btw HDMI out works perfectly on my 42" Sony LCD in the bedroom, so the problem seems to be associated specifically between the MBP and Samsung TV for me. I wonder if this has anything to do with the ongoing feud regarding the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy haha... if so, please leave us out of it!

Same problem here. HDMI was working perfectly before the 10.8.2 Lion upgrade. Once upgraded, I get a black screen with a huge cursor on it. When I try to double-click, I see menu option, again huge, and can't click anything. Is there a way to downgrade from this update?

My problem is precisely with a Sony Bravia LCD, so not Samsung-related!

It's just, simply, a bug of epic proportions, which would already be a shame for Microsoft but is beyond understanding for Apple.

Or maybe, as pointed in the NY Times article, it's just all too understandable, and the reflection of a company having peaked.

I have the same problem after retina firmware update and 10.8.2 update (MacBook Pro Retina) was installed.

Seems apple is more interested in iOS and iPhone than macs....
