iOS 6 update = Speaker not working properly

My speaker was fine and I have no reason to believe there are any hardware issues. As soon as I updated my iOS 5.1.1 to the new iOS 6 it stopped working and now I can't listen to music or watch videos on my iPhone unless I insert a headphone!

What's happened and how can this be resolved?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

I understand what you mean by pointing the fingers too early, but I must say that I haven't any success in carrying out basic troubleshooting procedures such as the headphone, the dock, fresh reinstall, reboot, system settings changes, after which I decided to post this question in attempt to get an answer. I am aware of the previous issues people had with their audio speakers but as far as am aware I don’t believe this is the same. This thread has over 400 people looking at it and the problem isn't minor either. I would appreciate that instead of criticise this thread you at least have some understanding and focus your energy into actually helping the few who have experienced this issue or not at all.

My iphone will only play sound on the right side without a headphone. This is normal ?And when I plug the headphones in it only plays music in the left side of my headphones. But when i go to sample ringtone sounds it works in both ears .Ive tried 3 differnt headphones and they are not broken because Ive tried ysing them on my laptop they work fine. This all happened yesterday after I updated my software to iOS 6. 😟

Thank you so much .It worked like a charm ,to think I was going to go all the way to the busy apple store to get it fixed lol I also have another question if somebody would like to help that would be great.I have a 3rd generation nano and when I connect it to itunes ,it won't recognize it at all.I have tried resetting the nano ,also I searched up more ways to fix this. The usb cord is fine ,any suggestions?

[SOLVED]

I have come to understand that the issue lies with the IPhone 4s speaker proximity sensor. This issue doesn’t exist with all IPhone 4s users as it has only affected several people. The sensor will not operate with the new update (reasons are not known by me) this is why the issue has been noticed by many off us as soon as we updated. The way to resolve the problem is to visit an apple store or an apple certified store and get it repaired (if you have warrant it should cover it). From there on you wouldn't get this problem again with future updates.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have as to how I got to this answer.

My iPhone 4S developed the same issue the past few days. Tried resetting, shutting the phone off, flipping the vibrate button on and off but nothing works.

No ability to use the speaker phone, incoming calls do not have any sound, no text sounds, alarm sounds, or keyboard sounds, etc. Can talk on the phone and hear others talking to me but that's about it. Phone has not been dropped, not damaged and not exposed to water. Going back to swap this phone out again...

Maybe this time they won't give me another refurbished/remanufactured phone on a warranty exchange. Speaking from experience, they are NOT the same as new iPhones. This one has been used for less than 100 hours of talk time and its on the fritz. The last one never worked right but I tried troubleshooting the dropped calls/poor sound quality with them for two weeks before swapping it out for this one.

Hope they are working to fix these issues...never had cell phone issues like this before!

Is there any indication that the issue will be fixed with in a future software update? I have had the same issue after the update to iOS6 on my 4s. For me it seems to be getting stuck in an Airplay mode. For example when I'm in the music app the Airplay icon appears in the bottom left with no volume slider beside it. Pressing the airplay icon gives me the choice of selecting the dock connector for output or the Apple TV for output.

I have also tried a complete restore to no avail.

Another interesting annomaly is that message alerts do not come through, even when the phone is off silent mode. But this is not the case all of the time, only some of the time. And sometimes, I get half a message sound before the phone decides that it shouldn't be making any noise.

How long did the repair take for you?

Sep 25, 2012 10:36 AM in response to SnipesHeat

How long does the repair take? I have lost all of my sounds since iOS 6 update with iTunes. Text tones, alert tones, music playing, keyboard sounds, ect. The only sounds I have are when someone calls me. I have reset, restored, set up as new iPhone. I lose my sounds for 45 minutes at a time. The only way they come back is leaving my phone alone for awhile. I'm highly annoyed at this point! My phone worked fine before this update.
