    This is exactly why Apple has lost me.. Instead of just coming out and acknowledging it's an incapatability (purely software induced) issue with some models of the 4s' with ios6.. They are trying to claim it is preexisting speaker condition.  It's pretty obvious when you can google "no sound and volume control iphone 4s ios 6" and hundreds of threads come up with the same issue, all of which were posted directly after the ios 6 release. 


    Instead of trying to deny the problems in ios 6 by giving all these useless hardware "solutions", they should have already acknowledged and corrected the particular software issue that is causing these problems.  It's a lot easier for a fairly busy person like myself to download an update than spending 2-3 hours going to the mall. It's pretty clear a major motive behind this is to get me to goto the Apple store for reasons other than "fixing my phone"

    I updated my 4s to IOS 6 and lost sound and everything was fine before.  I am thoroughly disgusted that Apple does not step up to the plate.  I mean come on all the same complaints over and over.

    Place it on a dock.  It thinks it's in "dock" mode!  Apple is a mess.

    I'm having the same problem. My phone has sound only when it rings or when I push the button for Siri. Besides that the speaker just doesn't work. So it's obviously NOT the speaker - it works with some things and not others. I had no problems until the iOS 6 update. The buttons on the side do not show a level when they are adjusted, unless I have only just switched from silent to not-silent.

    There's no anyone from apple team can join us here, i think we need to get an urgent update to fix this issue or abitly to downgrade ot 5.1.1

    Hey everyone,


    Over the weekend I went to the Apple Store to get the issue resolved. Unfortunately they were extremely busy (due to the Thanksgiving holiday up here in Canada) and didn't have time to book me for a walk in repair appointment. The good news is that one of the sales associates took my iPhone back to one of the Technicians after I showed him the issue, and the technician apparently said that if he had time he'd do something with some shims to fix the problem, or simply replace the phone. I should note that the sale person didn't really understand what the tech told him (he admitted that it may not have been anything to do with shims - that's just what he thought he heard) so take what I've said with a grain of salt.


    However, it seems like Apple knows the fix for the issue and is willing to repair it or simply replace it. Bring your iPhone into Apple, I'm sure the more that people bring it in the more they will become aware of the issue.


    Hope this helps, I know it's a little frustrating having a phone that doesn't make a sound.

    Simple fix.  Find an iphone/ipod dock.  Stick the phone on it and play music.  Let is play through the dock's speakers.  Take the phone off and you can now play music through your iPhone speakers.  The upgrade/restore to iOS 6 makes the iPhone think it's in DOCK mode, so the speakers are silent.  Only way to reset that is to place it on a dock.

    I use a dock every night to charge my phone. That didn't work either.


    I was at the Apple store on Tuesday, they told me that my speakers need to be replaced. Even though they work fine. This is clearly a software issue, NOT a hardware issue. If it was hardware they would work or they wouldn't work. However, Apple seems to be in complete denial over this.

    I'd be very surprised if Apple ever releases a fix for this issue.  It's a lot easier to just play dumb to a few thousand 4s users than it is to develop a software fix that works for iphone 5, the 4s models that do work, and the 4s models (like ours) that don't.  I'm also conviced it is a ploy to get us to goto the Apple store.  While some of us may just get it fixed and not upgrade to the 5, "getting us into the store" is marketing 101.   Apple isn't just the superpower it is today because of a superior product... It's also because its marketing tactics are brilliant.

    I had this problem,immediately after upgrading to iOS 6 on my iPhone 4S  When it's docked I see the audio routing option for "iPhone" available and sound plays via the unmuted speaker like it should when undocked, and when I remove the phone from the dock it shows "Dock Connector".  Meaning the software in iOS6 has the designator/status for audio dock backwards.  I don't think I have a bad/dirty/faulty connector, the new bahvior started immediately after updating with no prior symptoms.  Headphones work as expected, so it's just the dock connector really.  I'm seeing number of posts and videos, people reporting the same issue as soon as they update to iOS 6.


    If you don't have Airplay enabled (or more than one audio output option available), you won't see the an enumerated list with the audio output selector and just experience a "missing volume slider."   In this case the phone is in on "Dock" mode and will not present the slider (it's sending the audio to an external device), and becomes something of a mystery to the user given the lack of choice, and lack of information.  This is made even more confusing in all the above cases since some audio comes out the speaker, audio that is always supposed to route via the phone's speaker (e.g. adjusting the ringer) always plays just fine.


    This is a SOFTWARE bug. 


    Also, Apple should ALWAYS show the option for sending iPhone audio out via the phone's speaker,  since it's always present it's should always be an option!  In my case, the dock doesnt even feature audio anyway --it's just a charging station!  Having this option would have helped.

    I have the exact same problem, but only after switching to IOS 6.

    My iPhone 3GS, was fine before the upgrade. Then after it developed this problem.

    Bought the iPhone 5, with IOS 6 preinstalled. Same problem.


    Is there a way to check if the IOS thinks the headphones are in?

    My phone had not had a ring tone since I upgraded to the IOS6 software.  The phone lights up but there is no ring.  I also have no volume icon anymore.  The side button to mute phone does not work and Bell Icon does not come up anymore.  I tried resetting phone to new no luck there.  I went to my provider who could not find anything wrong with the phone.  It does ring if you test the ring tone just not when a call comes in.  I took it to an Apple store who also could not find anything wrong with it and said he had several customers with same problem.  He is esclating the call to engineering and supposedly they will get back to me.  Meanwhile I have no sound!!!!!!  Very frustrated!!!!
