iOS 6 deleted my text messages and iMessages

When I downloaded the new iOS 6 software, it deleted all of my text messages and iMessages. Is there anyway I can get them back?

Just make sure to restore your iPhone from the iTunes backup which was created during your last iTunes sync. If you enabled iCloud iOS backup, restore your iPhone from iCloud in order to recover your messages.

It is always recommended that you keep a backup of your iPhone data (including text messages) via iTunes, iCloud or third party utilities such as the one described here: How to backup iPhone SMS.

Did your BackUpTrans corrupt your messages system? It did for me, and I don't know what to do. At least once a day or so I have to reboot my iPhone because messages will stop sending / receiving. Sometimes messages disappear and I have to force quit the messages app to get it back going. More often though, it will just stop sending and then I cancel out, reboot, and it will work. iMessage is fine on my iPad, but my iPhone (which I used BackUpTrans on) is now messy. Also, it won't do group messages (those crash the messages app right away now). All changes have only been since BackUpTrans, nothing else. Any suggestions?

Hi Cray 7,

Wondering could you be of help please. I've stumbled upon some of your excellent solutions in this thread and you seem to have extensive knowledge of all things iPhone 🙂

My Query : Last night I upgraded my 3GS phone from iOS3 to iOS6 software. At first it took a few attempts after an error 1402 code but I switched USB ports and it all went through fine with the software extraction, software upgrade, firmware etc. Everything transferred over to my phone (Contacts/Calendars/Voice Memos/Notes/Bookmarks etc.), however none of my Text Messages transferred over - I have 1000's of them and want to keep them, much like yourself 🙂

The good news is that I have a backup in the Mobile Synch folder and also copied over to my external hard drive for safe keeping in case of corruption or overwrite. Have you come up with any solutions to get old text messages transferred over succefully?

I live in Ireland and today got notification that iOS6.1 is now available for download. Apple have hardly made to effort to fix our problem?

I have the Wondershare Dr.Fone software which works great and I can still see my text messages from the Backup through that software but I really want to have them on my phone.

Any help you can provide would be so much appreciated. I'm wondering is there any other software that may be of use to us here?

Thanks a million,

Brendan

hi bodfella

I was facing the same problem after update of iOS 6.0.1 released on Nov 1, 2012 most of my messages were shows empty especifically institutional and similiar those are without contact numbers such as bank, service provider etc.

if u have done a backup before ios 6 or iOS 6.0.1.and restored after update..it may work...

plz refer the steps i hav gone thru

before update iOS 6.0.1 i have done a backup to my laptp and restores once updated to 6.0.1 and i kept the empty messages as it is...until the new ios 6.1 released on 28 jan 2013...

after the new release i downloaded the ios 6.1 ipsw file completely (almost 1gb) to my pc instead of auto update....then plug the iPhone to iTunes then manually update it (it may ask connectivity to verify)

once updates done i find those empty messages are return to its old state. if u are in similiar position you may try the same..but Be careful. if u are trying now to restore ur old backups you will lose all ur new message/photos...etc..

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your detailed reply 🙂

Good to know that someone else has similar problems - the difference though is that none of my text messages are showing and I've used 2 different pieces of software to scan my phone in its present state. I used DiskAid & also today TouchCopy 12 - they are just showing up the texts I've received/sent in the last few days since my upgrade to 6.0.1.

None of my 1000's of messages are showing up in full or as "empty" since the upgrade. All I can presume then is that none of them transferred over, especially as they're not showing up in the software scans and the new texts are. What do you think?

I still have the Backup from before I upgraded from iOS3 to iOS 6.0.1. So what I'd planned to do was to restore from that data. I obviously will lose any data that is new on my phone in the last few days since the upgrade right?

Why did you download the ios 6.1 ipsw file completely (almost 1gb) to your pc instead of auto update....then plug the iPhone to iTunes then manually update it?? What would happen if you tried the update through iTunes in the normal way?

Sorry for all the questions but if you have a few minutes to take the time to reply then I would be very grateful to you Sam 🙂

Thank you so much,

Brendan

If you still have the iphone backup before updated to iOS6 and want to restore text messages from the backup to your iPhone, a program called Backuptrans iPhone SMS Backup & Restore can help. You can check it's tutorial on how to restore SMS from iTunes backup to iPhone.

PS: Run the software to extract messages from your backup first before connecting your iPhone for restoring would be better.

Best luck!

Okay, I had the same problems, after upgrading my Iphone 4S, I lost all of my newer contacts, all SMS messages, all phone history, and email.

I broke down an purchased the Backuptrans iPhone SMS Backup & Restore program for approx. $23.

Well worth it, it found the corrupted backup file I made prior to the firmware upgrade and extracted 40,000 text messages and restored them to my iphone.

THAT problem is solved, now does anyone have a solution for getting back my phone log history, notes, reminders? Not critical, but it would be nice to get the notes back. I see there is a program (Wondershare) to extract that data, but it doesnt restore it to the phone?
