output volume inactive (muted)

After installing the Mountain Lion in my MacBook Pro, the audio volume icon in the menu bar is inactive (grayed) and the keyboard keys, are not responding.The mute chk box is checked (i.e. it is muted) and disabled.

Any ideas how Can this prblm be solved???

Check in your System Preferences > Sound > Output. See if the internal speakers are listed in the white box as an output source. If they are then uncheck the option to mute them and crank the volume.

If they are not listed then shut down the MBP and reset the SMC and PRAM to get the speakers recognized again.

Follow the below links for the articles (do the SMC first so you don't have to reboot the Mac twice);

SMC;

PRAM;

When this is done go back to your Sound preferences and you should now be able to chose the built in speakers as the output.
