Same problem with Telstra. I don't think this is a carrier issue.

Hi all I have the same problem with my ipad 3 G3. Carrier and Apple support all very friendly and ready to help. I did all the below suggested measurements and finally can see my personal hotspot featuring on my Mac book pro, but when I switch from my home wifi to my ipad, Mac book tells me: you are not connected to the Internet. I tried various positions in the house, had both devices next to each other and apart. I restarted all the lot and it still does not work. I am with Vodafone in Malta. As I said: all IT people I had contacted were very helpful and patient. Yet to no avail.

Dear all.. I just got the iPhone 5 in Malta and I was having the same problem.

I managed to work out the problem!

I wrote some steps for you.. Hope they work:

    1. Go to Cellular in General and go in Cellular Data Network.

    2. There you need to have something written down from your carrier in order to have 3G/4G/5G Internet,

especially in the Internet Tethering section below, which in my case I have written down 'web.melita'.

       (Melita is my carrier name).

    3. Now Restart your phone.

    4. Turn wifi off and switch on Cellular Data Network.

    5. Check if you have Internet access with 3G.

    6. Go to Personal Hotspot and Turn on or Setup. This switches on your hotspot and lets you change your password.

    7. Now, the iPhone tells you that your wifi is off.. And so click on 'Turn on Wi-Fi'.

    8. Now, you can only use the hotspot through USB Cable & Bluetooth. By the way, this is another bug.

    9. To use it with wifi, you have to switch off your Personal Hotspot and turn it on again.

    10. Now you phone is discoverable through wifi as well!

    Hope this works for you.

go to Settings-->General -->Cellular-> Personal Hotspot (turn it on and then should reappear in the normal place at the top of the Settings menu)

I purchased the IPhone 5 specificly for the mobile hot spot. I got rid of my MiFi and I have been working on this for 3 months. Phone was exchanged for new one and set up as new phone 3 times! What really makes me angry is that they put me through hours on the phone, going to the Apple store, restoring as a new phone and replacing all of my contacts, re-setting up my voice mail...hours of my time when they KNEW none of this would work!

They know these devices are defective but refuse to stand behind their products. They want me to take some small gift from the online store. I am not looking for something for free, I am looking for a solution. I asked if they would defray the cost of me obtaining a new MyFi and they refused to even consider it.

Apple has a huge pull on me because I am deep into the ecosystem of Apple. I did this because I trusted Apple. That trust is dead. I am giving them one more chance to see if engineering can come up with a solution. If not, I am off the AT&T to purchase a Samsung Galaxy and release myself from all things Apple.

If you are having the same problem, don't waste your time. Apple believes they no longer need to stand behind their products. It's time that consumers help Apple regain some humility!

    Two things:

    1) make sure vzw has your account set up right. They had to delete and add my data plan to make it work

    2) I found that you have to leave the hot spot on/off screen open on the iPhone in order for my ipad to initially see the hotspot to connect. I don't know why this isn't more clearly communicated, but its definitely the only way to make it work with both my wife's and my own iPhone 5.

Let me explain my problem with this issue and how it was resolved.

I had an old data plan (2 gig iPhone Data) and recently changed to a mobile share plan. Whenever I tried to setup personal hotspot on my iPhone 5, it instructed me to contact ATT. I did, talked to customer service, was transferred to tech support where they told me it was basically an Apple issue. Frustrated, I looked online to find a solution, but could't find one that worked. I tried reseting network settings, restoring phone, etc. Still told me to contact ATT to enable hotspot.

Called ATT tech support the next day. Tech support said that my mobile share plan should have allowed my iPhone to use personal hotspot, but I explained to him that it still told me to contact ATT to set it up. Tech support "pushed" updates to my iPhone to ensure that old info was cleared and replaced with correct ATT network settings. I tried Hotspot again, but the same issue occurred.

Finally, tech support said he was going to change my data plan back to one that did not allow mobile share, and then change it back to the mobile share plan that I had. I turned my phone off for 3 minutes while he did that. Turned my phone back on, and the hotspot feature magically appeared and didn't tell me to contact AT&T!

So in conclusion, call ATT tech support and persuade them to change your plan to one without personal hotspot and then change it back to your current plan, as well as ensure network settings are up to date. If they tell you that it won't solve anything call again and speak to someone different until someone can oblige.

I was so frustrated with this issue and was on the verge of switching carriers, but thankfully this issue was resolved.

Hope this helps others who are having the same issue with personal hotspot!

I was having the same problem on my 4S: If i tried to set up a personal hotspot, i got an error message telling me to contact ATT. The LiveChat person at AT&T updated my IMEI and ICCID info in their system. They had me re-start my phone and the problem appears to be solved.

I use a prepaid card and have problems connecting my iPhone to my laptop all the time.

It's a pain every time.  So I took notes what made it work finally.

    1. What to do if your iPhone Personal Hotspot is not even visible in the WiFi list

    2. What to do if your laptop cannot connect to your iPhone Personal Hotspot

Check it out to see if it helps:

my iphone hotspot will not connect to the computer

    Good luck!
