You just wait Joe, until somebody will come back and explain to us that it is software problem and being frozen/dried up software fixes itself. Then he/she will rant for an hour, tell us that "happy to help" and "glad to be of assistance", despite the fact that nobody thanked them. Anybody with hardware warranty, stop useless debates and contact Apple for the repair/replacement. At that point it seems that thread has outlived itself, to everyone here goodbye and GOOD LUCK!
I just started having the same problem with my 4 !! I tried everything be resetting,resting our WiFi, resetting iphone, booting and rebooting !! I am P. .SED big time !! Funny thing is, that it just started happening and I upgraded to
iOS 6 a couple of months ago and had no problems what so ever. Also, this evening when I was trying to get it to work, it actually worked for about 5 minutes and connected to our Wifi and the setting wasn't "grayed out" anymore. Then it went right back to doing the same thing, but now, it used to have the writing underneath the toggle switch and now IT'S EVEN GONE !! I do not have the unlimited data plan that was once offered through my
network provider (AT&T) so unless I am hooked up to WiFi and useing the 3G network, I have limited time I can stay connected to the Internet, then they charge me for going over my payment plans bites. So what is APPLE GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS ??? This is total B.S. !! We need answers APPLE and we need them NOW !! I will switch to an android phone and with your stock plummeting because of no that many customers wanting your new Iphone 5;

Hi people who have also been very frustrated about this. I have tried everything on this including sending my phone to get "repaired". Waited 2 weeks for the phone to return from my local phone shop and then when it did they claimed it was water damaged and would cost 280 euro to fix! All of which is lies. I then thoroughly searches for an answer online to solve the greyed out wifi problem. I came across the flashlight on video camera fix and to my amazement it actually worked!! No word of a lie to anyone who is skeptical about this fix, it works. I made this account just to get this comment up for anyone who has doubts about this fix. For those who is unsure of what to do here's EXACTLY what I did to fix this:
Plug in your phone to put it on charge.
Start up camera.
Switch to video mode and turn on flashlight.
Press record and leave until the flashlight turns off to "stop phone overheating".
Turn phone off by holding top button.
Wait about 2 minutes( I was gently blowing on phone to cool it down, doubt this did anything though!)
Turned back on and waited for my carrier logo to appear.
Checked my wifi and miraculously it was working!!!!
This was on an iPhone 4S which started getting wifi problems when I upgraded to iOS 6.0.1.
Hope this fix sorts your phones out because I know how frustrating it is. Thanks to whoever originally posted this fix, you have made my day! :)
well.. i tried the "fashlight on video camera" option, but it solved it only for few minutes (same case with the freezer by the way) and then.. WIFI GREYED OUT AGAIN!!! i guess i can on rely on the mobile internet for now until some solution was found.. or maybe an update for the ios will fix the problem..
it's so annoying not being able to use wifi with my new iphone though.. i thought they were the best in the market :/
TRFCedd, I have no idea where you got your information that Apple doesn't replace refurbished iPhones, but a lot of friends of mine and even I have received replacement devices for refurbished iPhones, out of warranty or not.
Also, why would you expect someone that has a 1 year old iPhone that could've been dropped a few times, had some water splashed on it, had the screen scratched once or twice to replace that particular iPhone with a brand new $500-$1000 iPhone? I don't think there are a lot of companies out there who offer to replace the device for a lesser fee after you might have dropped it in water or it fell off the roof of the car. I have never had issues with a refurbished iPhone and have had mine replaced about 3 times (smashed screen, construction job) without hesitation.
In regards to the issue, Apple will happily replace the device for you in regards to the issue assuming you have gone through basic troubleshooting steps (restore as new etc.). If you were silly enough to not purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan then that is your problem and you will need to pay a fee. I can't stress enough how important an extended warranty is for ANY electronic device.
I understand that Apple is a world renowned company who should keep their quality to a high standard, however as with any electronic product there is the possibility of hardware issues.
All of you are stressing about this being a WORLDWIDE MASSIVE ISSUE, but you all are probably close to or around 1% of Apples customers, the rest obviously not having the same issue, or the rest instead of whining on forums about CONSUMER LAWS actually decide to contact Apple instead of putting their iPhone in a bloody freezer. Apple doesn't monitor these forums, so all of your whining is for nothing.
If you had read through my previous posts you would realise that that information came Directly from apple and all the statements i have made I have kept as close to direct quotes as I could remember , I escalated my issues up through 3 different superiors and spoke to area manager.
All you have done is reiterate my point.,,,,only fix is to replace handset under warranty, do not freeze , do not hairdryer it.
As for the replacement under consumer law, the amount I paid included the price of 1 brand new functioning handset,,,as it failed under warranty it is not classified as a working full value handset,,if you listen to the terms and conditions they make you sign , only a part service unit includes and extended 90day warranty. I was merely highlighting the procedure apple follows unless you clearly specify the replacement you require...they will and do give out still broken "refurbs" as you hav clearly discovered yourself,,,,included in the price on you contract then was..1 original handset,(quickly turns out it was faulty)! Then you got ripped off, not once but on THREE different occasions with a faulty refurbished unit,,,,,,,does that sound fair to you? lol lol lol enjoy your refurbs.

I was simply documenting the process which I had followed in the hope that it would help others, and your correct about the 1%(est) figure. As i have outlined in previous post, re: approx 100,000 handsets contains last model year components that are not compatible with software updates.....informed directly by area manager for North West Apple Inc.
All I was doing was assisting some of the people who haven't already spoken to apple or service providers.
If you had read my post, you would have seen that I said the reason I had my phone replaced 3 times was due to a smashed screen as I work in a labour intensive job which gives multiple oppurtunities for clumsy old me to drop the phone from high places. Each time I had it replaced they informed me that it would indeed be a refurbished iPhone. They will offer you a "re-manufactured" iPhone (which you refer to as a parts serviced phone) if the device is in good condition and has not come into contact with moisture and is generally within its first year if warranty.
I see you stated you payed retail price for a replacement phone? Because according to the Apple website (http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_Kingdom&product=iph one) I see that there is indeed a lesser charge for those replacement phones.
Their warranty webpage also states this: Apple warrants the Apple-branded iPhone, iPad or iPod hardware product and accessories contained in the original packaging ("Apple Product") against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period"). Apple’s published guidelines include but are not limited to information contained in technical specifications, user manuals and service communications.
I'm sorry if I misunderstood any of what you said, but your ability to string together sentences is lacking and may sometimes confuse me. Stop acting as a conspiracy nut, Apple aren't ripping anybody off. I don't think one of the biggest companies in the world would intentionally give customers faulty phones. Have you never had something that may have not worked out of the box or maybe crapped out down the road? Stuff happens, even more so with technology and the replacement options they provide for that go above and beyond what most companies will offer.

I have not paid for any replacement. I changed my handset under warranty , they tried to give me a reduced cost "refurb" . I was notifying people due to their warranty(which they rarely read) they are entitled to a "as new standard" handset...Apples words not mine. *as new standard are not retail version.
Apple staff WILL try and DO give out "refurbs" unless you make sure you question them on the phone and get them to add it to your case notes for when you visit the shop. The point I was making. And obviously a valid one too with apple area manager is that the replacement phone you receive from the shop is not "retail standard" as your contract states.(people usually pay more when they receive the handset with a contract, so feel rightly ripped right off when it breaks and get given someone else's repaired handset*refurb. Meaning by the letter,they have paid more than retail price for a cheaper than retail priced handset on apples own admission)
I also usually have limited time to type so i rarely get that pedantic and turn into a grammar fascist. Lol
There is no conspiracy but knowledge IS power and by being pre informed of information regarding other people's experience with a common scenario will be an invaluable assistance for people who wish to receive the level of customer service that Apples prices should automatically demand.
Again no conspiracy, no arguing. It's what I was told directly from the area manager. To be honest I couldn't give 2 ***** or not , all I know is they ain't having another penny from me in the future, put it down as a lesson learned. jus as an extra pointer.,..I too require a decent level of protection for my phone, (it was never damp or damaged) but I suggest you try a protective case called a Griffin Survivor. does the job. And supposedly bomb proof ;-)

Actually tried everything there was to try.
And at first the hair-dryer-method didnt really do the trick but after heating it up the second time I let it rest for a little longer and until now (about 5 hrs) it works! Amazing.
Seems there are some connections that melt and get back together afterwards…?

I don't think they melt, I think they(moisture, tracks of humidity, rust, possibly even shifts contacts next to each other) freeze or evaporate. But that is just a guess. Now some people here claim "it is a software", and they "heard it from Apple". I don't believe it to be correct, since software came out over 4 month ago, but if you want to read their opinion (up a few posts).
