Unfortunately it is not the case for me, warranty goes from the original start date when you buy the iPhone. I have had my iPhone replaced before so the current one is only 6 months old since I bought the original phone it's been 18 months.
I will double check online and I might still book and pressure them to replace it.
Ok Apple won. $617 later for the 5 (64 GB), 2 converter cables at $35 each, Apple Care $99 and lots of tax.... The interesting thing is that I was explaining the problems I have had after the 6.1.3 update to the Sales guy and he goes "sounds like a software issue". So the GENIUS BAR TELLS ME IT'S HARDWARE YET THE SALES GUY SAYS SOFTWARE. What is wrong with this picture? Make me buy a new phone because the Not so Genius Bar says hardware then when i'm paying over $600 the sales guy says software? Is this a trap?
I am a Systems Admin so I know it's software and everyone in the discussions and even tech sites say it's software. I have to remember that the guys at the Genius Bar (and Geek Squad) are people that make $10/hr and are entry level techs. I started was an entry level Help Desk tech about 18 years ago. It's obvious that this is software and NOT hardware.
Just flat out disappointed.
Disapointment is the least you may feel...
But this issue is mostly not software related. When the wifi address shows N/A, it's definitely not a software problem.
Some software versions may improve or make things worse, but the fact that reflowing (i.e. Resoldering) the wifi chip, when done professionnally, solves the problem, shows it's not software.
There's definitely some manufacturing issue with the 4s, causing the wifi & bluetooth chip to malfunction under some (unclear) circumstances...
Anyway, it's quite unbelievable that Apple is not endorsing this... Any car manufacturer would make a recall and fix or replace the defective parts, it's true that our lives are not at stake here, still, from a company like Apple, that's not exactly the type of service one would expect... :-(
Hello once more, after 1 month my iphone4s is grayed out again... So after trying EVERYTHING an since my phone was opened and repaired for a short time (I was promised no solution to this) i have to tell you my conclusion.
The 'antenna chip' is misplaced because of several falls and it's glue is probably inefficient.. You cannot fix this, only temporary!
it's clearly circumstantial that it happened after the update, you all know its not one particular update that caused this..
You can only blame the update for 'overheating' the chip and showing the problem..
my technician said that "my phone fell down many times and its as probable to damage the antenna as breaking your screen on the first fall!
Still I cannot say it is not Apple's fault, since its a common problem in 4s it means that somehow it's a faulty model!
Anyway I welcome any comment as I'm about to buy iphone5, but keep in mind that I TRYED ALL THE SOLUTIONS ABOVE!!
I was trying to connect to a new high speed wifi extender when the wifi button just went grey on my iphone 4S. The wifi signals couldnt be detected.
After trying everything including rest to factory settings, it looked like all was lost. The wifi option remained greyed out.
Finally i tried the hairdryer solution. I heated my iPhone 4S til it was too hot to hold and displayed a message that the phone needed to cool down. At first it didnt seem to work. The wifi remained greyed out. But within an hour the wifi just switched back on all by itself.
Amazing. Its now two weeks later and the wifi on the phone is just working fine again.

i turned on airplane mode. turn off the phone for 10-15 minutes. turn it back on and turn off airplae mode this time. wifi will then search for networks and then voila! its not greyed out anymore. just try it, it worked for me. i hope it will work for you to.

It depens on the damage your phone has. Mine was big and while I tried everything it made no deference!
After the track opened my phone, he saw that the chip was misplaced, he overheated it to the point of melting the glue and tried to put the chip in place. It worked for a month or so.
When I went back with the problem he just restarted the phone and it was ok.
Now I only need to restart or close the wifi or the phone for a while (whatever helps it cool down) because:
Since you cannot properly repair the chip it is sensitive, and while using the phone it heats up, the chip is deformed and wifi goes off.
The permanent solution should be at a proper Genius Bar, where the tech is equipped with all the tools, or has a new chip etc....
You must be kidding !!!
You really believe the guys at the (so-called) genius bar ever held a soldering iron in their hands ????
And btw, this requires a professional SMD rework soldering station, and requires serious skills. Furthermore, no genius bar in the world has replacement ICs for iPhone mainboards (nor for any other Apple product) !!!!
The ONLY practical solution to this problem (as far as it's not software related, as it seems the case for some, but when WiFi address is N/A, it's clearly hardware !!), is to replace the whole board.
Again, unbelievable that Apple has nothing (constructive) to say...
Took my original iPhone 4s back to an Apple retail store with button problems. I was given a replacement at their standard cost to replace for out of warranty products only to be supplied with a phone with this WIFI issue after just 12 hours of use. I then returned the phone luckily within the 90 days replacement warranty coverage only to be given another phone that’s WIFI packed up again after just 2 days use. It is now apparent that even though apple are more than happy to replace the phone within the 90 day replacement warranty that they are in fact replacing phones with know faults. I have written to written to Apple about this to complain - with no response as of yet. This unfortunately means for Apple that they could now be in breach of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982.
I have now booked my 3rd session in with Apple at one of their stores to see what they make of this fault. I have now escalated this to issue to Trading Standards who are particularly interested in the case. I would urge all and any UK based readers of this post to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau UK and explain their frustrations.
I have been taking note of travel costs and time inconvenience so that they will accountable for all future inconvenience as direct result of this well known fault. Also those who paid for their replacement by credit card please take note of the Liability Claims protection offered by your credit card provider - it may come in use. As part of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 the following is available;
- section 75 - gives you extra protection on items costing over £100 and up to £30,000 paid by credit card if service or product is believed to be in breach of contract.
I'm not keen on quoting legislation but these are here to protect the consumer and should be used to fall back on when necessary which I believe in my case and many other it is.
